Arabic words for intention
There ARE 3 different words for intention
NIYYAH- in classical arabic, means when you make the intention to do something but DO NOT SPEAK THE INTENTION, if you don’t say it its called niyyah
The second you verbalize it it’s not longer called niyyah, its called
IRAAADAH- not called niyyah in classical Arabic
“When Allah intended to do something he SAYS IT and it is”
Then when you take physical steps and you do it or start doing it, once you take practical steps its called
AZM – Allah talks about AZM in Quran because it talks about ACTION and DOING
That’s why SALAH HAS NIYYAH, DO YOU VERBILIZE NIYYAH? NO, you don’t verbalize it
TAKBIR
TAKBEER MEANS TO SAY Allahu Akbar
Now lets look at the two words
ALLAH-
This is referred to ISM UZAAT
There is a difference of opinion on the origin of the names of Allah, 2 basic opinions
-
The name of Allah is NOT derived from root, but unique name of Devine. From the beginning its been unique name of Allah
-
Second opinion is that the word has been derived, there is a root
Before moving forward, know the definition
There are 2 types of words in classical arabic
-
JAAMID- means an original unique word, not derived from anywhere
-
Mushtaq-means derived .It was derived from somewhere. It has a root and you know what the root is
Rule of thumb: If a word is assumed to be jaamid unless proven other wise. When you walk thru the door and a word is right there, you naturally assume it to be JAAMID UNELSSS you prove it to be mustaqh. You need to PROVE it to be mustaqh. If you cant prove it, its safe to assume jaamid. This is rule of Arabic grammar so default is jaamid
So we have 1 group of scholars that say NO, name of Allah is unique word
But majority of Islamic scholars say it has been derived from root, okay, than we ask where is it derived from. Then we have 4 different opinions- so those scholars that say it is derived
-
ALA HA YA LA HU- it means to worship or to be enslaved to someone or something
-
WA LI HA YA LI HOO- means to be overwhelmed, to be shocked and amazed by something
-
LA HA YA LUHOO- this is very archaic word, means to create.
-
LA HA YA LI HOO- means to be high, to be hidden, because Allah is hidden from the eyes of the creation.
They say original word was ILAAH- form the 4 opinions.
Now how do you make something proper in Arabic. You add AL
Now you have AL ILAAH, do that sound difficult to say? Yes, its heavy
Arabic has a whole study of making words as smooth as possible to say.
We remove E from middle, we get ALLAH
They say that is how it happened
