All talks about the prayer of the Mushrikoon

8:35 MOST INTERESTEING USE FO THE WORD SALAH IN QURAN

Allah says “He is telling us about the mushirkoon, the idolaters of makkah, before Islam came to them “And their salah was nothing but “ila MUkaa an” (whistling) (clapping) Allah is talking about mushirkoon, before Islam came to them they used to whistle and clap.
Now the mushirokoon, was their belief system correct? -NO

Was the method correct? -NO (whistling and clapping)

Their belief and method not correct, what they are whistling not correct

DESPITE ALLL OF THAT, this incorrect worship that they are offering ALLAH STILL CALLS IT SALAH!.

That tells you something…

Allah could have sad IBAADAHTUM… he said SALAHTU

WE learn that SALAH is a general word describing worship

And the lesson we can extract from that, just because someone is offering salah- its NOT GOOD ENOUGH, IT DOESN’T MEANS ANYITHING, ITCOULD BE GOOD, BAD, POSTIVE, NEGATIVE, IT COULD BE SOMETIHNG YOU GET REWARDED FOR OR SOTHING THEY CAN EVEN GET SIN FOR!!!

Bottom of page 4

1.03 Description of salah in the QURAN

This is interesting

In the Quran there is word associations

Allah associated certain words with other words

And associated words with concrete ideas

The association is created for a specific divine purpose and there is a reason and LESSON in it

Allah connects sabr with khayr

With sabr comes khayr

When Allah connects salah with something, an association is PERMENANTLY connected

Muhammad rasoolah, Muhammad IS the messenger of Allah

An association sometimes is created by SUBSTITUTION,. Everywhere in the Quran Allah says salah, salah, salah, salah then all of sudden Allah uses ANOTHER word for salah- (He substitutes it).
In the middle of Surah Baqarah-

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

2:143 “Here there is series of 7 ayah, starting with ayah 142 to 148

In these 7 ayah, Allah is talking about one of the most major incidences in the life of the Prophet pbuh that was THE TURNING OF THE QIBLAH,

We pray to Makkah, Muslims used to pray to AL QSA in Jerusalem

What happened was Prophet pbuh was able to pray at an anlge/direction toward Makkah AND Jerusalem at the same time.

Once in Medina he wasn’t able to do that,

Then Allah commanded that we turn the qiblah and pray

This was a PROFOUND strategic issue

It was a STATEMENT for not only Muslims but others as well

Because when they used to pray towards Jerusalem in Makkah, they were unique, no one else did it.

One they went to Medina, the JEWS also prayed in that direction! So it gave a uniqueness to pray towards Makakh

When the qiblah changed, the sahabah had a question, they were concerned about their ibaadah They asked “What happened to all the prayers we performed before this? those that prayed towards the old qiblah. Allah answered their question in this passage, in this ayah by saying
INSERT QURANIC AYAH

Wa Ma Kanallahu Liyudheea Imaanakum

ALLAH WILL NOT WASTE YOUR IMMAN.

What were the sabahas question about? About SALAH

How did Allah respond? With IMAAN

There is a significance here.

What is the bigger picture? IMAAN

Salah is a part of imaan. When you are referring to the part by mentioning the whole- the point is to show the IMPORTANCE of this part to the whole, to the entire piece.

Allah refers to salah as IMAAN to show the MOST IMPORTANT THING TO YOUR IMAAN IS SALAH!

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

2:238 AND STAND for the sake of Allah, COMPLETELY obedient

QUNOOT means COMPLETE OBEDIENCE. Subservient to Allah

This is another lesson in salah

Salah demonstrates and TRAINS US,

It trains a person how to live the REST of his life. How to behave and how to manage his life outside of the salah

What is the BEST position in salah? SUJOOD

The Prophet pbuh said “A person is CLOSEST to Allah when he is in the position of sujood”

What is the position of salah where we send the majority of our time in? QIYAAM where we spend the most time

What is the farthest position from sujood? QIYAM

The BEST position in salah is sujood but we spend majority of the position of time is spent in qiyaam

WHY? Makes you think

We are being told sujood is best but we want you to spend very little time in the best position

It is training you in obedience

You cannot logically approach salah you need to approach salah through OBEDIENCE
INSERT QURANIC AYAH

20:14

Allah when speaking to Musa says

“ESTABLISH THE SALAH, for the SAKE OF MY REMEMBRANCE “ Li Dhikri…

Whats the connection between salah and dhikr? Salah has dhikr inside of it

We learn in Surah Ali Imran, Allah teaches us that the unique thing about the remembrance of Allah is that you can do it standing, sitting, or lying down on your side.

Whats the connection between salah and dhikr?

If someone breaks a leg, they SIT DOWN and pray

If someone cant sit up, they pray LIEING DOWN

Just like dhikr applies to our whole life, salah is required our whole life, no exceptions!

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

9:103 I have been firmly commanded to perform salah and give zakah AS LONG AS I AM ALIVE.

I have to continue to pray AS LONG AS WE ARE BREATHING!

SALAH IS OUR RESPONIBLITY

“Take from peoples wealth, charity, and it will purify them, was salli alayhim, and pray for them , WHATS THE WORD ASSOCIATED WITH SALAH? SAKAN- IT COMES FROM PEACE TRANQUILITY,

It all comes from salah

1.04 WHAT IS KUSHU

Everyone says the word, talks about it, no one knows what is means!!!! And its scary! People see it as a great mystery!

The best way to figure out what a word means, is to look at how Allah used it in the Quran
INSERT QURANIC AYAH

20:108- The voices will shake and tremble..You will hear nothing but light whispers, their eyes will be lowered and humbled. Faces on that day will have KHUSHOO

You ever see a face like you seen something horrible, and you can tell from that persons face something is wrong, something is off,
INSERT QURANIC AYAH

41:39 You will see the earth with khushoo

The earth will be trembling and shaking
INSERT QURANIC AYAH

59:21 If we revealed Quran on mountains, it would be shaking and trembling

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

42:45 they will be taken and presented before th fire of hell, they will be afraid of the helplessness that they will feel, They will be taken to the brink of the fire of hell. They KNOW they messed up, they know they are in trouble, they are busted, what will they do? They will be PEEKING FROM THE CORNER OF THIER EYES. When a child does something wrong what do they do? They AVOID EYE CONTACT, its that GUILTY FEELING INSIDE OF THEM!

Their faces have khushoo, the earth shakes, the people will be…

Khushoo is what? ITS MORE EXTERNAL! Its important to understand this

We always think khushoo talks about internally being submissive or filled with aw of Allah but whats unique is khushoo is THAT type of awareness of Allah, that MANIFESTS itself in you PHYSICALLY, You physically show the signs of the fact that you are SHAKEN UP.
If someone is standing in salah lazy, looking around, groggy, tired you can tell.

IT PHYISCALLY MANIFESTS ITSELF

When you have khushoo, your FACE IS STRICKEN

YOU ARE COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED by the greatness of Allah whose presence you are STANDING in!

Page 6

1.05 IMPORTANCE OF KHUSHOO

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

8:2-4

Look at how Allah refers to people that perform salah in different methods. Allah refers to them differently

People who are true believers, they have KUSHOO in their salah

So people who pray with khurhso Allah refers to them with what title? MUIMNOON (QAD AFLAHAL MUMINOOM)

The muminoon are people when Allahs name is mentioned, their hearts TREMBLE!.

Their imaan sky rockets.

That is the effect of SALAH on a mu’min!

Allah also talks about another person…

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

70:19

Certain people who PRAY, doesn’t say how they pray, or what the quality is

Allah says

Ilal Muslieen- they are regular about their prayer”

In their wealth they know there is a right, it is for the needy, for the destitute,

They KNOW the day of judgment is coming,

They are FEARFUL of the punishment of their Lord

These type of people are described in what manner? POSITIVE, it’s a good people

They are called MUSALEEN

Muminoon and Musalleen are both good
INSERT QURANIC AYAH

In surah 107:4-6

Fawaylulilmusaleen this person DESTROYED HIMSELF, its to have pity on someone. Lilmusaleen,

Allah has pity on MUSLIEEN, people who are forgetful about their prayer, sometimes they pray on time, sometimes they don’t, not regular about their prayer, not careful.

Lacksadicasial

When they do pray, they are showing off!

NOW it is negative. What title is being used? MUSLALEEN
MUMINOON is always positive

Musalieen is sometimes positive, sometimes negative.

We want to be amongst the muminoon, and what quality do we need to be that? KUSHOUU
This is comparison from Quran and Hadith of Jibreel

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

4:142

Allah talk s about hypocrites

When they stand for prayer, they stand LAZY!!

This person looks like strings are holding him up, he looks pathetic when he prays

“They are showing off to the people”

“And they have not a lot of remembrance in Allah except for little bit”…maybe here and there they recite fatiha, His mind is WANDERING..!!

Even then they do pray, what is the primary objective? To show off
Lets look at hadith of Jibreel

INSERT HADITH

“ISHSAAN- It is that you worship Allah AS IF YOU CAN SEE HIM!

If you cant see him, Then most definitely He is MOST DEFINITELY IS WATCHING YOU.

The true believer is only concerned with the idea that Allah is watching him
Page 7

1.06 The Prerequisites for Khushu

1) Changing of Lifestyle:

Leaving sins and haram

Increase in practice of Sunan and Mustahabbat and Nafl

Decrease in vain and unnecessary indulgences

Increase in Recitation and Study of the Quran

2) Preparing for salah

Free yourself up and block out time in your schedule dedicated for salah (give it just as much importance as other items!)

Perform salah at the preferred times (no delaying)

Wudhu properly with sunnah, paying attention to details

Siwaak

Go to the masjid 15 minutes early

Listen to and repeat the adthaan

Pray with jamaat

Relax and breath easy, start forgetting distractions and worries of the world

Ask for Allah’s help because you can’t do anything on your own

3) While performing salah

Keep your eyes fixed at prescribed places

Observe and focus on postures in salah

Focus on the meaning of what is recited

SLOW DOWN, pause after each verse and recite dhikr slowly with concentration
1.07 How do we approach salah vocabulary?

We will study roots, conjugations, and derivates

Look at near synonyms and the implications of word choices

Look at usage of the Word in the Quran and Sunnah

Analyze sentence structure and its eloquence

Discuss deeper meanings of the words

2.01 THE OPENIING TAKBEER

Niyyah

If you notice, niyyah is missing in this section.

Unanimously of all the scholars, INTENTION IS MUST OF SALAH IT’S A REQUIRMENT so why is it not placed here? From a fiqh perspective there is no VERBAL INTENTION prescribed
Arabic words for intention

There ARE 3 different words for intention

NIYYAH- in classical arabic, means when you make the intention to do something but DO NOT SPEAK THE INTENTION, if you don’t say it its called niyyah

The second you verbalize it it’s not longer called niyyah, its called

IRAAADAH- not called niyyah in classical Arabic

“When Allah intended to do something he SAYS IT and it is”

Then when you take physical steps and you do it or start doing it, once you take practical steps its called

AZM – Allah talks about AZM in Quran because it talks about ACTION and DOING

That’s why SALAH HAS NIYYAH, DO YOU VERBILIZE NIYYAH? NO, you don’t verbalize it
TAKBIR
TAKBEER MEANS TO SAY Allahu Akbar

Now lets look at the two words

ALLAH-

This is referred to ISM UZAAT

There is a difference of opinion on the origin of the names of Allah, 2 basic opinions

  1. The name of Allah is NOT derived from root, but unique name of Devine. From the beginning its been unique name of Allah

  2. Second opinion is that the word has been derived, there is a root

Before moving forward, know the definition

There are 2 types of words in classical arabic

  1. JAAMID- means an original unique word, not derived from anywhere

  2. Mushtaq-means derived .It was derived from somewhere. It has a root and you know what the root is

Rule of thumb: If a word is assumed to be jaamid unless proven other wise. When you walk thru the door and a word is right there, you naturally assume it to be JAAMID UNELSSS you prove it to be mustaqh. You need to PROVE it to be mustaqh. If you cant prove it, its safe to assume jaamid. This is rule of Arabic grammar so default is jaamid
So we have 1 group of scholars that say NO, name of Allah is unique word

But majority of Islamic scholars say it has been derived from root, okay, than we ask where is it derived from. Then we have 4 different opinions- so those scholars that say it is derived

  1. ALA HA YA LA HU- it means to worship or to be enslaved to someone or something

  2. WA LI HA YA LI HOO- means to be overwhelmed, to be shocked and amazed by something

  3. LA HA YA LUHOO- this is very archaic word, means to create.

  4. LA HA YA LI HOO- means to be high, to be hidden, because Allah is hidden from the eyes of the creation.

They say original word was ILAAH- form the 4 opinions.

Now how do you make something proper in Arabic. You add AL

Now you have AL ILAAH, do that sound difficult to say? Yes, its heavy

Arabic has a whole study of making words as smooth as possible to say.

We remove E from middle, we get ALLAH

They say that is how it happened

Evidence for Name of Allah being Unique
Evidence 1: What was the rule of thumb we learned? Can they concretely establish and prove root? NO, they cant decide, what is safer bet, to assume its JAAMID

Laam is not an awful letter, it’s a LIGHT letter

With the exception of ALLAH

ITS AN ENTIRE LANGUAGE AND THROUGH THE ENTIRE LANGUAGE IN EVERY SITUATION laam is a light letter in any place, EXCEPT FOR ONE WORD, ALLAH. That is a unique rule just for the name of Allah , this is evidence 2 that Allah is a unique word

Evidence 3 that name of Allah is unique

When you call out to someone, how do you do it?

YA

YA ZAID (hey zaid)

But there is one issue, if I am trying to call someone or something and the word I am trying to call their name or thing begins with ALIF LAAM, say a boy

AL WALAD

Ya al walaad, you CANT just put “ya” because it starts with ALIF and LAAm

What’s the buffer? AYU HAA

So I should say

YA AYU HAL WALAD

Example in Quran is YA AYU HALATHEENA AAMANU

There is ONE exception to this rule

YOU CAN SAY YA ALLAH., ONLY EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE

It’s unique, has its own rule!

Evidence 4

ALLAH HUMMA

Its in the Quran

You know what it is?

It’s a name fo Allah with a meem and shadhah after it

What does that mean? It means YA ALLAH

Basically uttering a meem at the end is the SAME as putting a YA in the front

Slight difference, Allah humma is more passionate, thats why its used in supplications, but essentially in meaning it’s the same!

If thats what it is , instead of saying ya zaid,

Can we say zaidumma? MUHAMAD-DUMA? No

THE ONLY NAME YOU CAN PUT A MEEM AND SHADDAH ON IT IS ALLAH

This gives evidence that the name of Allah is unique.

AKBAR

This comes from the root of the word means something to be BIG, something to be GREAT

The interesting thing is,

AKBAR is the pattern of the word called ISMUL TAQDEER (the COMPARATIVE PATTERN)

So for example,

Zaid is smarter than Khalid (COMPARATIVE)

Khalid is the fastest (SUPERALITVE)

Similarly

AKBAR, it is the COMPARATIVE, it means GREATER, (NOT greatest)

ALLAHUAKBAR, means Allah is greater.

ALLAH IS GREATER, does that sound like a complete sentence? -No

ZAID IS FASTER THAN… you would logically ask WHO? Zaid is father than who?

Similarly certain statements DEMAND an object

Thus, We say Allah is greater then…

In classical arabic its left open FOR A PURPOSE

This happens in Quran

INSERT QURANIC AYAH

FIRST AYAH OF HUJARAAT

Object is needed to complete the statement but its l eft blank
Its done to PERSONALIZE the message!

So now that its open ended and you can apply to it mentally, internally in your contemplation to WHAT EVER APPLIES TO YOUR SITUATION

So you are at work with work that is due and time for salah comes

ALLAH IS GREATER THAN WORK

If you are at school or studying for an exam and time for salah comes

ALLAH IS GREATER THAN SCHOOL

If you are being distracted by your children,

ALLUHAKBAR- ALLAH IS GREATER THAN MY LOVE FOR MY CHILDREN

If its time for Fajr and its difficult to wake up

ALLAHUAKBAR-ALLAH IS GREATER THAT MY REST, MY SLEEP

It’s a personalized message! ALLAH IS GREATER THAN WHAT EVER AT THIS POIINT IN TIME IS DISTRACTING YOU FROM YOUR SALAH!!!!
2.02 OPENING SUPPLICATION

There are 7 or 8 opening supplications narrated by the Prophet pbuh

Out of them 3 of them are the most popular ones

We will study all three of them- that way everyone is covered.

Even if you choose to recite one of them or ALL THREE OF THEM, they are authentic prophetic supplications

This is THE MOST DIFFUCLT PART OF THE COURSE,

  1. What you will come across is new vocabulary so this is the slow part of course. We need to work through it!

  2. All thee supplications are completely different from one another, but we cover so much vocabulary that once we go forward the ball starts to role, you know the words and it becomes easier. We NEED to have the habit that once we come across word once, or 2nd time, we need to KNOW the word. This is best way to stay alert and retain what we learned.

  3. Saturday is hard work, it’s not just a conceptual course, it an APPLIED course. Saturday is a lot of work, when you are building vocabulary, Sunday is the fun part of the course. We save interesting part for what we study on Sunday. Sunday is more enjoyable. Saturday is WORK. You have to focus and put effort into Saturday.

FIRST OPENING SUPPLICATION 1/3
ALLAHUMA-

YA ALLAH
BAA IDH- Comes form root of word for SOMETHING TO BE DISTANT, FAR, it’s the ANYTONYM of kareeb, Something is far and distant. This specific form of the word is the COMMAND FORM. It’s the sophisticed, exaggerated form of the word- it implies MUTUAL ACTION, means OH ALLAH PUT A HUUUGEE AMOUNT OF DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. Baaidh

The 2 different things are
BAYNEE WA BAYNEE KHATTAYAY
BAYNEE- is 2 words

BAYNA- is the first word meaning BETWEEN, comes from same word MUBEEN, bayinaat, bayina all come from same root word, MEANING TO CLARIFY SOMETHING

Also means TO PUT CLEARLY BETWEEN

EE- me
Oh Allah put a great distance clearly between ME and…
WA- AND
KHATA YAA YA-Plural word,

The singular of this word is KHATEE AH, normally this word is translated as SINS, but that is not an accurate translation

KHATEE AH refers to MISTAKES, errors, slipups which is LESS than sins,. Sins implies you knew what you were doing was wrong, KHATEE AH is slip up, you didn’t realize you made a mistake. KHATA YAH is plural

YA at the end means MY (to show possession)

MY MISTAKES,

MY ERRORS

MY SLIP UPS
O Allah put a huge amount of distance clearly between me and my mistakes, my slips up

Why is the word mistakes used and not sins? Because if We are asking Allah,

Khatayah is thing YOU DON’T EVEN REALIZE YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG
If we are asking Allah to remove from us, to distance from us from things we DIDN’T even realize we did wrong, OBVIOSLY we are also being distanced from our SINS as well!!

We are asking OH ALLAH REMOVE MY sins and slip ups

KA MAA- just like, Just as
BA ATA- past tense form of BAA ID

Just like you placed a huge amount of distance

AL MASHRIK – means the EAST, comes from root word SHARK, to fill something with light, to illuminate something
So why would the root of east come from fill with light? BECAUSE OF THE SUN!
AL MAGHRIB and the west, almaghrib refers to THE WEST

We also call salah maghrib

The salah maghrib occurs at what time? SUNSET

The root of this word refers to something being FAR AWAY, something GOING AWAY, something VANISHIHNG, DISAPPEARING

Why would the west be called/referred to something vanishing? SUN IS GOING away, SUN DISAPPEARS!!
WORD:

GHAREEB- means stranger, why is a stranger called gharee? Because he comes form somewhere we don’t know about! Place not known to us!

GHURABAA- plural
GHURAAB- means crow- comes from same root which means to vanish and disappear

Like many cultures, the jahiliya arabs where very superstitious people and they have attached a lot of superstition to the crow. They used to see crows as evil omens. They used to mean death. If they saw a flock of crows over a village it means someone will die so they gave it a name GHURAAB thinking they would go away. They prided themselves on their words. They thought words were very powerful and thought if you called it ghuraab it would vanish

NEXT there are 3 portions, sections

We covered first section

OH ALLAH PUT A HUGE DISTANCE CLEARLY BETWEEN ME AND MY ERRORS JUST LIKE YOU HAVE PUT A HUGE AMOUNT OF DISTANCE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST

NOW Imagine from the perspective of the Prophet pbuh who taught us this, you look all the way east and west, how large is that distance? ENORMOUS.

NEXT SECTION
ALLAHUMA- Ya Allah
NAQINEE-

NAQI- Comes from root of word meaning to CLEAN SOMETHING OF, to BRUSH SOMETHING OFF. If I drop food on the table, and brush the food off, what have I done? NAQI

NEE- Me

MEANS CLEAN AWAY FROM ME, BRUSH AWAY FROM ME

MIN- from
KHATA YA ya- MY sins
KAMA- just like
YOU NAQAA- just like it is removed
ASTHOWB- from clothes
AL ABYADH- WHITE

What’s another word that sounds like this? BAYDHAA- means eggs (because eggs are white)

Just like it is removed
MIN ADANAS-

DANAS- means a type of filth that leaves a stain

Very specific word, its important to know that it stains

Because sometimes things fall on your clothes, like bread falls, that doesn’t leave a stain

But say biryani falls on clothes, it DOES leave stain
O ALLAH BRUSH AWAY FROM ME, MY MISTAKES MY ERROR

But even though we are distant, it leaves behind effects, it leaves behind residue

The word DANAS was used, I removed rice/biryani from clothes, now is there a stain? Yes, what can I do? WASH IT
