Grammar:

The Simple Present and the Present Progressive for the Future.

In the e-mail message that you read, you saw Steve use the following present tense forms:

I’m leaving Tokyo on the 15th to go to the head office. I start there on the 21st.

The verbs in hold are in the present tense form, but they do not refer to present time. They refer to future time. Why is that?

Very often, when you refer to a future event that is planned and scheduled to occur in the near future, you use the present progressive.

Thus, in the sentense above, I’m leaving does not mean that Steve is leaving at this moment. It meansthat his plansfor the 15th are already made and set.

Similarly, in the second sentence, I start does not indicate that Steve regularly starts working on the 21st of every month. In this case, the simple present is used to refer to an official scheduled event. Steve will start work at the head officeon the 21st.

Both of these forms can refer to future scheduled events and are frequently used when talking about travelling.
