Should for Advice; Could and Might for Suggestions.

You probably already know how to use might and could, as well as may, to talk about the possibility of something happening. Now here is an additional use of might and could that is slightly different: using these words in suggestions.

In the dialogue you hear the words could and might in sentences like these:

Maybe you could strengthen your grip with the left hands.

Then again, you might lower that shoulder…

In these sentences, Steve is using could and might to give some suggestions to Mark.

Could and might, as you know, express possibility. When these same words are used to make a suggestion, the suggestion is a gentle one.

One suggestion is that Mark could strengthen his qrip. Another is that he might lower his shoulder. Steve is not strongly stating his opinion or telling Mark directly what to do. Instead, he is trying to point out some options to Mark. By doing this, Steve is just stating that such options exist, but he is not directly suggesting that Mark follow any of the options.

This is different from should. When Steve says:

First of all, you should relax.

he indicates that he wants Mark to relax. He thinks it’s a good idea for Mark to relax. Using should – instead of could or might – makes the suggestion stronger. It is, in fact, a recommendation.
