Athletics Outreach Programme Summary: 2011

Brief description of activities: Took place at Cape Recife High School the distances covert were 9km 5,5Km fun run,3,5Km Wheelchair/Walk Race starting from Admiralty Way, Summerstrand and finished opposite NMMU North Campus main entrance at the back gate of Cape Receife School. The race started at 08h00. ABSA NMMU Athletics Club students and Staff members volunteered at the event responsible for marshalling and the securing of the route.

Brief Description of Activities
The club provides a coach to assist at the Northville Cricket Club. We involve their club coaches at the session as well as we feel it is important for the coaches to learn from the session in order to apply the principles long after the session was completed.
We also assist with equipment needs and with the coaching of the Northville junior team.
NMMU 6-a-side tournament

Brief Description of activities:
A NMMU communiqué is sent to ALL NMMU staff and students inviting them to enter the annual NMMU 6-a-side tournament. The first 16 entries are accepted. Four fields are used, four teams per pool followed by semi-finals and the final. We have been running this event annually since 2008.
Schools T20 tournament
We host between 4-6 schools annually in September each year by providing the schools with 2 x fields at no cost to run their tournament. The tournament runs over two days i.e. Friday afternoon and Saturday. This year the tournament took place on 23 and 24 September and was run by John Draai from Bethelsdorp Comprehensive School. We intend to grow this tournament as it has become quite a popular event with the schools.
PE College

Brief Description of activities:
The cricket club provided the Second Avenue cricket fields at no cost to PE College to fulfill some of their league fixtures in the 2010/2011 season.
Hockey Outreach Programme Summary: 2011

Description: Schools Hockey Outreach (Isaac Booi Primary School, Myezo Primary School, Emfundweni Primary School, Stiyeni Primary School, Kwezi Lomso High School).
This consisted of training sessions on a Monday and Wednesday so that each school receive coaching every second week. This culminated in the best boys and girls players from each school being selected to partake in the youth day festival arranged by EP Hockey Development. We provided the players with Transport, meals and sticks for this occasion.
Besides the Schools Outreach and Development, we continued our relationship with Invaders Men’s and Ladies Teams. These teams participate in EPHF League and play in the following leagues:

Each team that participated in the league had a dedicated coach. We also provide transport to all matches and it included home drop-offs for all players, especially the ladies.
Jeremy Mambalu is also currently working as an administrator at the EPHF Offices through a mentorship programme.
We also Mr. Sheppard Vusani is on the EPHF Executive on the Development Portfolio who has been part of the Outreach Programme since its inception.
Netball Outreach Programme Summary: 2011

Description: Eleven coaching clinics were held with the coaches taking the players through the basic skills on the Friday afternoon and Saturday morning or on weekdays after which all the schools played a round robin against each other.

Description:
The NASSA Outreach Programme is designed to cater for the three age groups of the NASSA secondary schools football programme. The tournament is organised in partnership with NASSA and attempts to create sustained competition over a two month time frame in the Under 15, 17 and 19 age groups. The Tournament culminates in a day of Finals for the three age groups. The objective of the tournament is to create awareness against gangsters and drug and alcohol abuse, as these areas in the Northern Areas are plagues by social evils of drug and gangsters.

Description:
The NASSA Under 17 Coaching Clinic is designed to prepare a NASSA representative team for participation in a National Engen Under 17 Tournament and for the SASFA NMB Schools Trials. The objectives include Technical and Technical Tactical Team preparations. The coaching clinic is conducted by a SAFA Level 2 Coach and four student assistants.

Description:
The need for Coach education has been highlighted by the lack of quality soccer coaching within the Local Football Associations across the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.This pilot projected was a joint venture between SAFA NMB Coaches Association and ABSA NMMU Madibaz FC. NMMU Sport Manager, Mark Tommy and SAFA Coach instructor, Desmond Lewis conducted the SAFA Introductory Coaching Course over 2 days at the NMMU 2nd Avenue Campus. A total of 32 Club Coaches attended. These coaches expressed a real need for further training in this manner.

Description:
This International Coaching Course was part of a National Coach Education and Lifeskills Training role out and a result of a joint venture between KNVB and SOS Vilage as the World Coaches Programme. NMMU Sport Manager and 2 Student Coaches participated. NMMU Madibaz Football Club is now part of the Family Strengthening Project for SOS Village in Port Elizabeth and is involved in Coaching and lifeskills development in the Port Elizabeth communities of Schauderville and Veeplaas.

Lonwabo Charles (NMMU chess player) is the main person of contact as he is starting a chess club in Motherwell.
Cycling Outreach Programme Summary: 2011

Team/Club Rides
Took place from April to August from Fig Tree SPAR. 90 participants from all ages took part in the fun rides. Everybody got together – different distances were followed and some people only did a short bit of the ride. The rides finished at the Shell Garage in Kragga Kamma
MECER NMMU Race
The race will take place on 20 November. A Rug Rats Cycle 4 Kids will take place while the main race is on the road. Children from 2 to 12 years old will do different short criterium races in front of the stadium. Tandem bicycles each riding with a rider on the back who is partially blind will also take part in the 45 km fun ride.
The club also received a bicycle from the Vice Chancellor for Outreach in the club. This year the bicycle was given to Zuko Nkasa. He took part in the Lorraine/Makro 45 km race and will also be racing in the 45km race at the MECER NMMU Race on 20 November

The club members invite all interested rowers to attend an open day at the river with club members. Here, competitive qualified rowers teach all novices the basic principles of rowing. At the end of the day the novices take part in several races against each other. From the 1st Open Day we had 4 novice girls take to rowing and mad such good progress that they were selected to the Girls A crew for Boatrace 2011 in Sept.

Brief description of activities: We decided to do an internal outreach programme this year. Most resident students do not play squash as they do not even know the sport. Description: The Learn to swim programmes teaches all participants firstly how to be water safe. Participants engage in a 10 week programme, where qualified instructors teach them basic principles of water and swimming relevant to one stroke. This is all done in a pool where participants can touch the bottom of the pool – for safety. The programme allows for progress, whereby if an individual shows due progress in the first 6 weeks, the instructor will then take them into the bigger pool. This gives the participant more confidence with practices.
Surfing Outreach Programme Summary: 2011

Description: All participants must be water safe and able to swim. The programme teaches participants the basic principles of surfing. Participants are firstly introduced to the mechanics of surfing and the equipment through a lesson on the beach. The instructors do demonstrations, and the participants are allowed to try themselves. Once participants are familiar with these principles, they go into the water accompanied by an instructor by their side. Once in the water, the instructors talk them through the mechanics and assist where necessary.

Players are taught basic tennis skills and techniques. On Thursdays, its staff tennis days. There is staff club headed by Nadine Strydom.
