Cricket Outreach Programme Summary: 2011
Northville Cricket club

Date of Program Ongoing

Number of participants Approximately 30-40 players

Brief Description of Activities

The club provides a coach to assist at the Northville Cricket Club. We involve their club coaches at the session as well as we feel it is important for the coaches to learn from the session in order to apply the principles long after the session was completed.

We also assist with equipment needs and with the coaching of the Northville junior team. We further involve the Northville coaches in our Outreach projects to gain experience.
Schools T20 tournament

We host between 6-8 schools annually in September each year by providing the schools with 2 x fields at no cost to run their tournament. The tournament runs over two days i.e. Friday afternoon and Saturday. The tournament is run by John Draai from Bethelsdorp Comprehensive School.


LOTTO sponsored coaching project

We hosted several coaching education programs following funding received through LOTTO.

Sessions were held at both Triomf Primary and Missionvale Campus.

Hockey Outreach Programme Summary

Date of programme:     1 March 2012 to 27 September 2012

Venue of programme:  Dan QeQe, Missionvale Campus & Gelvan Grounds

Area: Zwide & New Brighton Area

Age of Participants:     Primary School: 6-15 years; High School 15-20 years, Adults 20 + years

Number of participants:      Invaders Teams: 48 & Schools: 60 kids

Description: Schools Hockey Outreach (Isaac Booi Primary School, Myezo Primary School, Emfundweni Primary School, Stiyeni Primary School, Kwezi Lomso High School).

This consisted of training sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday so that each school receive coaching every second week. This culminated in the best boys and girls players from each school being selected to partake in the youth day festival arranged by EP Hockey Development. We provided the players with Transport, meals and sticks for this occasion.

Besides the Schools Outreach and Development, we continued our relationship with Invaders Men’s and Ladies Teams. These teams participate in EPHF League and play in the following leagues:


  • Invaders Men: First League (all matches are on Astroturf)

  • Invaders Ladies: Third League (all matches are on grass)

Each team that participated in the league had a dedicated coach. We also provide transport to all matches and it included home drop-offs for all players, especially the ladies.

Jeremy Mambalu is also currently working as an administrator at the EPHF Offices through a mentorship programme.

We also Mr. Sheppard Vusani is on the EPHF Executive on the Development Portfolio who has been part of the Outreach Programme since its inception.

Lotto Hockey Outreach Project 2012

We conducted coaching at the following schools in Zwide:

• Mfundweni Primary School (45)

• Garrett Primary School (40)

• Isaac Boy Primary School (30)

• Kwezilomso High School (25)

At these schools we have a total of 140 scholars that received hockey coaching every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon during the month of March and April 2012.

These scholars were supplied with hockey sticks, beacons and balls to undergo all the training sessions, as well as a beginner’s goalkeeping kit.
Netball Outreach Programme Summary
SPAR Coaching Clinics (10 clinics)

Description:                    10 Coaching clinics were held with the coaches taking the players through the basic skills on a Friday afternoon and Saturday morning or on weekdays after which all the schools played a round robin against each other

Soccer Outreach Programme Summary
Northern Areas Schools Soccer Association (NASSA) COACHING CLINIC:

Date: 14 and 15 May 2013

Duration: 2 days

Venue: At the schools- St Thomas High, Livingstone High,

Target Areas: Northern Areas: Schauderville, Gelvandale,

Target Age group: 14 to 17 year olds

Description:

The NASSA Under 15 and 17 Coaching Clinic is designed to prepare a NASSA representative team for participation in a NAFA Under 15 Tournament and National Engen Under 17 Tournament and for the SASFA NMB Schools Trials. The objectives include Technical and Technical Tactical Team preparations. The coaching clinic is conducted by a SAFA Level 2 Coach, SAFA Level 1 coach and four student assistants. (Mark Tommy and Lukhanyo Wasa the coaches)

The Coaching clinics proved very successful as the players were coached at their schools and over a four day period.
Missionvale – Zwide Schools COACHING CLINIC:

Date: 17 and 22 May 2013

Duration: 2 days

Venue: At the schools- Phakamisa High and Kwezi-Lomzo High

Target Areas: Missionvale and Zwide

Target Age group: 14 to 17 year olds

Description:

NMMU Soccer Club has adopted the Phakamisa High School under 15 and 17 school teams to play as NMMU Junior teams in the official Local Football Association (PEFA). This is consistent with continuous support and football engagement.

The Phakamisa High School Coaching and Lifeskills workshop and Clinic is designed to prepare the school’s team for participation in a PEFA Junior Leagues and National Engen Under 17 Tournament and for the SASFA NMB Schools Trials. The objectives include Technical and Technical Tactical Team preparations. The coaching clinic is conducted by a SAFA Level 2 Coach, SAFA Level 1 coach and four student assistants. (Mark Tommy and Lukhanyo Wasa the coaches). The Coaching clinics proved very successful as the players were coached at their schools and over a four day period.

Squash Outreach Programme Summary: 2012

Date of programme: 9March 2012

Venue of programme: North Campus Squash Courts

Area: Nelson Mandela Bay

Age of Participants: 18-35years

Number of participants: 19 people


Brief description of activities: We targeted students who live on and off campus aswell as community members. We had our 1st league players demonstrate basic skills. Players got an opportunity to play against each other. This resulted in a few players of colour joining the club and also the forming part of the league teams

Tennis Outreach Programme Summary

Brief description of activities: Basic Tennis coaching skills, racquet holding, forehand and serving sills by bursary holders.
The Tennis club has embarked on a Tuesday Thursday initiative where students and scholars play socially on a Tuesday under the supervision of the 1st league tennis players and NMMU Tennis Coach. Players are taught basic tennis skills and techniques. On Thursdays, it is staff tennis days. There is a staff club headed by Nadine Strydom. We also had a coaching clinic ran by our coaches Hennie De Klerk and Francois Du Plessis
Table Tennis Outreach Programme Summary: 2012

Venue of programme: NMMU South Campus Kraal

Age of Participants: 18-35years

Number of participants: 23
Brief description of activities: Hosted an open day at the kraal, create awareness Had our club members and coach assisting beginners, showing them basic skills. The more advanced participants, played a mini tournament which was won by Ruan Saunders from Arries Table Tennis Club in Malabar(March) and the one in September was won by Thembelani Magodla (NMMU Table Tennis Club)
Chess Outreach Programme Summary: 2012

Date of programme: April- Oct

Venue of programme: Ikwezelihle Primary School

Area: Motherwell

Age of Participants: 8-15 years

Number of participants: 37 people


Description: Basic chess skills, life skills, conducted by players. These players are coached by our club players. We visit the school and also choose 10 of the players to participate in the NMMU Open Chess tournament (Bsection). Lonwabo Charles (NMMU chess player) is the main person of contact as he has started a chess club in Motherwell.
We donated old sets and boards to the club, also bought them a demonstration board for practice purposes.

Volleyball Outreach Programme Summary
Date of programme: 20 February 2012 - 29 August 2012

Age of Participants: 14 – 19 years

Number of participants: 120 participants

Brief description of activities: The idea was to target those schools who were not actively participating in the school league, to encourage them to become of the school league that was played at the Missionvale Campus on Wednesdays.

Number of participants: 30 participants

Brief description of activities: This was a res league tournament to recruit more students to play for the club to offer volleyball as a social sport.

Brief description of activities: A partnership were started with IMBEWU an NGO in the Township to promote sport and to teach life skills to learners in the immediate areas. This project is very successful and is been running over the last few years, The NMMU basketball club are working with IMBEWU by providing coaching and resources.

Rowing Outreach Programme Summary: 2011
Date of programme: 19 May & 27 October 2012             

Venue of programme:              Redhouse, Zwartkops river

Area: Nelson Mandela Bay   

Age of Participants:  18-26years      

Number of participants:  25 people   

Brief description of activities:

The club members invited interested rowers to attend an open day at the river with club members. NMMU qualified rowers coached all novices the basic principles of rowing. After the days coaching, the novices took part in several races against each other. The NMMU Rowing club entered a novice crew into the USSA boat race and they won the gold medal.

Brief description of activities:

We were able to have a successful program and teach the students from Kwazakheli our sport. They were picked up at their central point and transported to the NMMU Rowing Club’s boathouse on the Redhouse river. The secretary from Siyanqoba Sports Club once again joined in the program and help co-ordinate.



Swimming Outreach Programme Summary: 2011
Programme: Learn to Swim

Venue of programme:         NMMU Fitness and Aquatics Pool

Age of Participants:       Range between 19 – 24 years       

Number of participants:           120 in total (60 per programme)           

Description:

The Learn to swim programmes teaches all participants firstly how to be water safe.   Participants engage in a 10 week programme, where qualified instructors teach them basic principles of water and swimming relevant to one stroke.  This is all done in a pool where participants can touch the bottom of the pool – for safety. The programme allows for progress, whereby if an individual shows due progress in the first 6 weeks, the instructor will then take them into the bigger pool. This gives the participant more confidence with practices.


Swimming clinic for the physically disabled    - 19 May 2012 

Nmmu Swimming club conducted a swimming club for the physically disabled. Schools including Cape Receife attended whereby pupils were shown swimming techniques and games from our NMMU swimming bursary holders which included Kevin Paul.

The clinic was conducted by Khatarina Paul with 25 kids attended the clinic

Surfing Outreach Programme Summary
Programme: Learn to Surf                                  

Date of programme:        4 May – 15 June & 7 Sept – 26 Oct 2012   

Venue of programme:         Municipal Beach (next to McArther Pool)

Area:           Humewood

Age of Participants:       Range between 19 – 30 years       

Number of participants:           125 (63 per programme) 

Description:

All participants must be water safe and able to swim. The programme teaches participants the basic principles of surfing. Participants are firstly introduced to the mechanics of surfing and the equipment through a lesson on the beach. The instructors do demonstrations, and the participants are allowed to try themselves. Once participants are familiar with these principles, they go into the water accompanied by an instructor by their side. Once in the water, the instructors talk them through the mechanics and assist where necessary.



Water Polo Outreach Programme

No programme for water polo due to lack of interest.
