GC: And do you think that this image coincides with you?

  • BIGLAKE3: Not at all.

  • GC: [laughs]

  • BIGLAKE3: [laughs] Not at all, but I know many physicists that behave like these, that seem a lot like this picture.

  • … a physicist has always been perceived as a genius, first of all, so there is immediately, well, let’s say that who is not a physicist always places himself in an inferior position, so he thinks that he would not understand what one would say to him, that he is not able; this always embarrasses me a lot because I studied physics because I liked it, because I had an attitude towards it, to study physics you have to possess an attitude or you cannot succeed in doing it _ first of all. Secondly intelligence, you must possess it, it not depends from you, then you can use it in a bad or in a good way but this is another matter.

So this kind of reverence when I say to some people that I got a degree in physics, that I am a physics professor at the University, they are like ‘ah!’ [a sight which simulate a surprise], this embarrasses me a lot, because there is nothing, there is no reason why I have to be venerate, let’s say it in inverted commas, because I only used my capacities - and, well, I was also lucky, I was in the right place at the right time many times, so there is no reason to feel worse than me, but so many times this is the behaviour of people.

This female informant believes that she is not a genius, as people think when she tells them that she’s a physics professor, instead, she ‘put her capacities into their right dimension’ because she was born intelligent, she worked a lot and she was lucky being at ‘the right place in the right time’.

    • What do men think about the stereotype of the physicist ?

    • How do they relate themselves

    • to it ??

    Stereotype: men’s opinions

    • SHORT RIVER3: I think that a physicist remains someone very far away to common people, as an awkward being living in a world apart, due to who knows which reason. Actually I feel I live in the common world, at least I live in it, I’m not completely part of it, but I live in it. But I think he’s seen as a very_ as a person with a lot of fantasy, who actually has to have a lot of fantasy, but because sometimes you invent something for which you say “yes, you definitely are a physicist if you thought of something like that”.

If you have the fantasy of putting this piece of thing inside a detector is really due to the fact that you’re a physicist.

    • GC: And how do you feel, according to this image?

    • SHORT RIVER3: well, I’m quite like that.

    • GC: mmh, that is to say, it describes you a bit?

    • SHORT RIVER3: yeeees, if this is the image yes, but perhaps it is because this is the image I have

    Changes

    • Next issues are about changes

    • In physics: bigger experiments, you do not have a broad picture of what is going on in the experiment you work in.

    Changes in physics

    • MEDIUM LAKE2: (..) experiments become bigger and bigger, more and more complicated, more like factory work, (...) I realized that one experiment might be almost your entire career, I mean, so it is getting a bit boring in the end, you know? (...) So this is a big change, I mean, 20 years ago, when I started, practically the experiment would involve 50 people at most, and it was a huge thing, you knew everybody, spoke with everybody, it’s not like that anymore, it’s not like that anymore.
