What is the impact of role-play on improving students' speaking skills in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms?
Introduction
In this day and age, English language is widely spoken around the world and it has reached the state of the global language (Rao, 2018). From early age children are taught English as it is a great path to the successful future; it is widely used in various fields such as trade, business correspondence or commerce. Accordingly, the profession of English teacher is popular like never. There are uncountable interactive methods of teaching English, however, the instructor needs to be able to grab students' attention with the help of enjoyable activities that encourage them to take part in class discussions. Game-based learning is one of the most effective ways to stimulate educational and cognitive processes in teaching English. Games in foreign language lessons play a big role in acquiring new skills and abilities, and also develop the motivational sphere of students, create a friendly atmosphere in the classroom, and foster a sense of responsibility and mutual assistance, since during the game students are a single team. It can be noted that the use of games makes the learning process more entertaining, improves the motivatedness of statements and makes them more reasoned. Role play is an interactive learning technique that encourages thinking and creativity abilities, allowing students to practice to use foreign language in an environment that is maximum close to real life , or target language authentically. Role plays have ability to enliven the class and make students take actions. Students like to pretend as if they are someone, trying to act like another person , changing manners , using gestures – completely enjoyable process that pushes them to pronounce words in a beautiful and understandable way. Consequently, this technique can improve upon learners’ speaking skills taking them to real-life situations (becoming a particular individual, such as a doctor, patient, waiter, and so on) and help them to interact with each other. Speaking is requisite ability to be enhanced as implies of efficient intercousre (Leong and Ahmadi, 2017).
The researcher tries to answer the following question:
What is the impact of role-play on improving students' speaking skills in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms?
The study aims to:
Investigate the effect of role play on learners’ speaking abilities
Examine if role play helps learners boost their confidence for oral communication in English
Literature review
Numerous studies have been conducted to find out the effectiveness of using role play techniques. The definition of role-plays was given by a vast majority of scholars in various ways. Revell characterized role play as a person’s spontaneous behavior being responsive to others in a hypothetical situation (Irianti, 2011).
Role -play is a strategy that highlights the importance of communication skills and has notable effect on pupils’ oral abilities (Alzboun, Smad and Baniabdelrahman, 2017). In role play, students signify their emotions; (2) it is an emboldening activity; (3) rather than simply ponder on the situation role-play gives scope to feel it ; (4) pupils feel motivated; (5) ensures the preparation for actual situations; (6) could be used to enhance interpersonal skills; and (7) role play is type of communication equipment that is put on action not words in use (Yusuf and Setyamardani, 2020).
The study by Neupane (2019) was carried out to identify whether role-plays play a significant role in improving pupils’ speaking skills. A researcher used experimental approach , teaching experimental and control groups through role-play and grammar based teaching method respectively. Observation sheet and speaking test were used as tools. The results revealed that role plays impacted significantly on students’ communication skills. Ernawati (2023) found that implementing role play in the classroom improved speaking skills
and student engagement. Daniastuti (2018) conducted a research which purpose was to find out how the relevance of motivation and teaching learning technique effect toward students learning result score on speaking skill. According to the results, the usage of role-play and simulation technique played biggest role in improving speaking skills.

Data collection
In this research data will be collected using observation and the tool for collection is expected to be field note.
