Corpus Christi, local ABC campaign called Be SAFE from Diabetes; 1 yr pilot extended to 3rd year; getting sponsors for public service announcements matched by ABC and broadcasters; Corpus lead in below knee amp and now are decreasing – measurable success; TV station or newspaper will buy into a theme, love health stories which raises their ratings, good marketing; coalition with media so they were involved at beginning.

City of Dallas has a good model for trails

Fit Future Ft. Worth. Five schools, corporate partners, faith based organizations, neighborhoods, health practitioners, local government.

  • strategies for constituents, 5-point plan: childhood obesity school health coordinators worked together to share what works, work-site wellness competition, continuing education program focuses on childhood obesity, recruit Tarrant county municipalities to going fit future network,

  • pier 1 work site wellness, fit future pier 1, faith based org, municipalities, school using the fit future brand, now a comprehensive approach thru different sectors so parents, kids can do together.

Needs assessment within minority communities – CAN DO Houston – after school program in elementary schools – use police to ensure safety, parks and rec to conduct the programs, metro for transportation, minute maid for snacks. Partner with non-profits to provide the resources for those programs. Resources provided depended on what the community asked for.

“Can do Houston”- CITY AND SCHOOLS, children and neighbors defeat obesity working together. After school, pulled in parks and rec, police, minute maid, goals, programs in low SES neighborhoods.
