Rachel and Max were cousins. She was a daughter of Shlomo Chaim Levine, a brother of Max’s father, Moishe Levine.
Rachel and her sister, Sarah, departed for the U.S. in 1914 when Rachel was not quite 18, Sarah not quite 16. Their father had to take them to the ship in Germany because people under age 18 couldn’t cross borders alone. Rachel and Sarah came to the U.S. on the Red Star Line, in 2nd class. They had been given enough money to last them for four weeks.
Rachel and Sarah stayed with Chaya Sena’s brother and sister-in-law, with the intention of returning home after four weeks. However, World War I broke out and they couldn’t return, had to find both lodging and work. Mordacai Zev (Max), their first cousin, found them a place to live with a family. Rachel and Sarah had to learn English and to find a way to earn a living. They eventually worked preparing feathers for hats.
Max took them under his wing, visited them often. Sam Sabeau also visited the house in which they were living, to see his sister who was part of that household. Max claimed that he said to Sam, “You take one, I’ll take the other,” so that Max and Rachel, and Sarah and Sam, became couples.
Since she was staying in the U.S., Rachel had a photograph taken. The photographer thought it beautiful, put it in his window. Max passed it each day on his way to work, eventually bought it, and later said that he “fell in love with the picture.” He asked Rachel to marry him, but she could not until her older sister, Esther, was married. Thus Max and Rachel kept company for six years until Zalman and Esther married. Six weeks after Max and Rachel were married, Sarah and Sam married.

Heshe and Jacob came to the U.S. after the majority of their children were born, after 1906 and before 1913, based on the year of Sadie’s death and the purchase of the farm in Schodak NY. Before purchasing the farm Jacob, Heshe, Tillie, and Joe lived at 413 Cherry Street in New York.
They purchased the Schodack farm with a loan from the Jewish Agricultural Society. It was a poor piece of land and they were able only to eke out a living producing milk and some vegetables. The farm was in the family until 1947. Jacob worked the farm until his death in 1924. Heshe continued to live on and work the farm until her 1935 death. Several of their grandchildren had memories--the milk being kept cool in a spring, no indoor toilets, Jacob’s big red beard, and chickens everywhere--of visiting the farm and sometimes staying there in the summer.
According to David Axelrod, his grandmother did not want to be buried in a low spot in the cemetery because she did not want the water to flow into her grave. She was not buried next to her husband, but in a high spot next to a clump of trees in Albany NY.

Nathan arrived in the U.S. in 1891, became a tailor on New York City’s lower east side. He lived at 410 Cherry Street, a tenement of about five floors with no elevator and shared bathrooms. Around 1909 Nathan and his cousin, Morris Sutin, bought a farm in East Berne New York. The farm did not work out, so a short time later the family moved back to New York City where Nathan and Minnie’s remaining three children were born. In 1924 the family moved to Albany, buying a grocery business on the corner of Franklin and Bassett Streets. Minnie made and sold candied apples and chocolate covered bananas, Nathan made wine. Harry Sutin owned the building. They lived above the store, moving to 340 Morton Street after they retired.
