Barney described crossing the English Channel as follows: “We were not the only ones trying to get out of Russia. There were others as well. When we were getting near the border... everybody lied (sic) down very quiet, not to be heard, and were all covered, and when you stopped your heart went up to your throat. At night time, men in uniform opened the back and looked in, and you didn’t know what was going to happen.... someone who was paid... let us through.”
He originally arrived in the U.S. in 1890. At age 8 he went to school, knew a little English, graduated from public school in 1898. He then went to City College of New York. His parents then left him with Becky (who had married) and moved to Toronto, but returned before long.
After receiving law degree Barney practiced law for 1½ years, then went into the clothing business with Harry and Louis. Harry ran the factory, Louis handled the cutting room, and Barney was responsible for sales and management. When Barney moved to Toronto in about 1912 he also went into the children’s clothing business, and eventually he and others were a major manufacturer of ladies’ coats and suits, providing stock to Eaton’s and other high-end retailers.
In late 1919-early 1920 Barney’s company, then manufacturing ladies’ suits and coats, was quite large, shipping merchandise all over Canada. When a small depression occurred, he was forced to move the business to the second floor of a smaller building. He heard that the person occupying the first floor was going to have a fire (presumably to collect insurance), asked that man to let him know if he planned to do so in order for Barney to move his stock elsewhere. The man had a fire, did not inform Barney in advance. Barney was furious, felt he had been double-crossed. Barney had insurance to pay off his $200,000 loan, but the fire marked the end of his business.
Barney was an early automobile buff, had a 1918 Paige, which was a fancy car. He was still driving at age 95 according to an undated Toronto Star newpaper article, said he had been driving for 65 years without an accident. Having just had his license renewed, the said, “I plan to keep on driving as long as my mentality holds out.”

Gordon formed an engineering consulting practice in Hamilton, and in 1972 his practice earned the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada’s Award of Excellence recognizing his unique “SWARU” Resource Recovery Facility as the leading civil engineering project in Canada. In 1980, with Patrick Mahoney of Albany, Gordon founded Energy Answers Corporation, formed with the purpose of designing, building, owning, and operating facilities based on the waste-to-energy technology developed in Hamilton.
