He married Esther Michelle Levine, granddaughter of Abraham Levine, (half?) brother of his grandmother, Rochel Hode. Zalman reportedly was working as a tailor and pants maker in Kansas City when he visited New York where Esther, who had come to the U.S. at age 15, was living. Her brother, Mordecai Zev (Max) Levine introduced them, they married, and Esther moved to Kansas City with him. In the 1930s, after losing his business and his home as a result of the stock market crash, Zalman and Esther returned to New York, where Zalman ran his father’s bar. Zalman, Esther, and their three children lived above the bar. (The 1940 Federal Census indicates he was living in Coxsackie NY then, at age 49.) Grandson Ken Polk has written, “Samuel [Zalman] was a jack-of-all-trades during his working days... bar manager, tailor, door-to-door salesman, even a cowboy in Kansas for a short period!! Unfortunately, my Mom knew all those specifics, and I have just those very broad memories, nothing else anymore...
