First, I can say that, data security has an importance in human life for many centuries. Ancient Roman Empire had a data encryption method called as Caesar Method which changes the letters of an original text. And during World War II Germans used rotor machines for data security (it was the Enigma).
If we jump to the information century, today we live in a digital world, and everybody uses mobile phones. These small cellular phones are always in our hands, and nobody wants to have an unsecure conversation on the phone. At that point engineers developed GSM A5/1 Encryption Algorithm to serve a secure mobile phone talk for GSM users. But no security algorithm can stay as unhacked, reverse-engineers developed some attack methods for the A5/1.
In summary, during my thesis project I implemented A5/1 key generators in software by using Java programming language, and also I built simplified versions of the A5/1 with Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSR) and tried some attack methods on these algorithms.
