We are seeking applications from adult learners with a personal interest in art history and conservation. Priority will be given to participants who have not enjoyed the experience of international learning, those who have no formal qualifications in the subject, and those who would like to become more confident in accessing the visual heritage of their local art galleries and heritage sites. Priority will also be given to older applicants and to those from minority ethnic groups. Applications from Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are encouraged, although learners from other countries will be welcome. Main activities Programme + Programme translation:
The wonderful baroque buildings of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, were built in the 1690s as a hospital for old and injured seamen. The Painted Hall, originally intended as a dining hall, was decorated by English painter Sir James Thornhill in a style consistent with other European artists of the age including Rubens, Verrio, Ricci and Orazio Gentileschi. It is the largest painted interior of its type in the UK. A major conservation project taking place in the Painted Hall will give participants a once-in-a-lifetime chance to observe conservators at work and to take part in some hands-on conservation activities. The programme also includes visits to other world-famous painted interiors such as the Banqueting House and St Paul's Cathedral and talks by experts in baroque art and wall painting. Participants will have opportunities to investigate and discuss the international language of art and architecture – the themes and symbols used by European artists – and to compare artists and heritage sites from their own areas. Learners will stay in historic Greenwich, part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.

Printmaking is in one of the most significant advances in human communication, especially taking into account that the invention of the printing press is considered the catalyst for mass literacy in the western world. Therefore, Adventures in Printmaking: Linking Language, Visual Communication and Cultures Workshop aims primarily to provide learners with the opportunity to learn about the history of printmaking and techniques in a very practical and enjoyable manner. The workshop will support learners’ understanding of how printmaking has influenced modern society, communication and learning, and help them develop and advance their communication and collaborative skills by taking part in a variety of practical workshops and sessions throughout the week on a range of relevant printmaking topic areas. In particular, learners will experience a range of printmaking techniques in order to develop their own body of work in collaboration with other learners from other countries, and together prepare an exhibition at the end of the week to showcase the work developed. The workshop will act as a vehicle for comparing cultures and therefore learners will be tasked with investigating the influence of printmaking in their own country in order to share this in a “Show and Tell’ style session during the week. This, together with the collaborative task during the week, will provide learners with the opportunity to compare and contrast printmaking influences in their own country and that of others within the group. The ultimate goal is to develop and promote a shared understanding about the languages and cultures of the participants. A variety of sessions have been planned for learners to take part in, including: • Mark making • Silk Screen & Textile Printing • Waterless Plate Lithography • Etchings and Acrylic Resist Etching Aquatint • Narrative and story telling through prints. These sessions will be delivered by experts in the field and at specific locations with appropriate printmaking facilities for learners to utilise. Learners will also be given the opportunity to learn about local printmaking in the West Midlands and evaluate some work exhibited in local galleries. Where cultural visits have been arranged, the aim of these is to further and enhance learners’ understanding of the topic of the workshop and to support the development of specific skills.
