Target Group + Translation:
Adult learners (not professionals) interested in environmental issues, plants, ecology, tourism and education. The participants with no prior experience can also take part in it.
Main activities Programme + Programme translation:
Ethnobotany is a branch of botany that studies plant and human relations. The aim of the workshop is to provide knowledge and better understanding of the plant, environment and human relations. The participants will obtain information about Latvian nature and vegetation. Training hikes in meadows, marshes and dunes will be offered. The staff of the Herbarium of the University of Latvia will provide training on preparation of a herbarium.

The experts of the branch will explain the issues of the use of plants for food, medicine and cosmetics. The participants will get acquainted in practice with the wild flora of the Gauja National Park, Engure Lake Nature Park and the Orchid trail.

Another topic covered during the workshop will be the healing properties of honey. The participants will also be able to extract plant paint for yarn and fabric processing. The participants will visit the Latvian Nature Museum, the National Botanical Garden and Ethnographic Open Air Museum. A guided excursion "Architecture of the Old Riga" will be organized.

The participants will gain knowledge about ethnobotany and use of plants for food, cosmetics and medicine. The understanding of how this knowledge can be applied in the context of the participants` countries will be facilitated.

Expected participants are enthusiasts of local culture life and research of history of their local communities. Professional knowledge or skills in the subject of the workshop are not required. Basic communication skills. Participants must be able to carry out accurate physical work with their hands. The expected participant is creative and motivated to develop personal abilities, learn new methods and gain experience in order to polish the image of the local community through research and popularization of its identity.
Main activities Programme + Programme translation:
The workshop will provide knowledge on archeological research of cultural and historical heritage and synthesis of newly discovered information and artifacts with already known historical facts and legends in order to create a message establishing a strong local identity. The participants will learn basic skills of archeological research and protection of cultural and historical heritage in accordance with the principles of modern archeology.

Practical tasks will include research on a site of an old household in a region with rich and diverse history and learning basic practical archeological skills. In addition participants will learn how to incorporate research findings into the framework of local history.

Theoretical part includes lectures about the process and techniques of archeological research and site preservation, the history of the site, methods of construction and running households in Latvia. Participants will be asked to share their knowledge about similar objects in their local communities on voluntary basis.

06/12/2012 Arrival. Meet and greet: Amsterdam. Opening session: week programme, expectations, agreements, introduction 'Alternatives to Violence training'(AVP) and the special AVP format for youth: 'Help Increase the Peace' (HIP).

07/12/2012 Basic training: 3 sessions on affirmation, communication and cooperation. Dance workshop: 5 rhythms.

08/12/2012 Basic training: 3 sessions on community, conflict resolution and affirmation. Common dinner: Amsterdam, evening off.

09/12/2012 Visit to Marken. Training for facilitators (T4F): teamwork, feedback skills.

10/12/2012 Training for facilitators (T4F): practicing and preparation in groups for learning by doing HIP sessions.

11/12/2012 Performing a task: facilitating HIP workshops for youngsters in ROC Midden Nederland ( a college) or in the Asylum Seekers Centre, both in the city of Utrecht.

12/12/2012 Evaluation session, agreements for dissemination, consultation and cooperation. Good bye lunch and Departure.
