Open Institutions – active aging through community arts

Subject area: Inclusive approaches

Intergenerational learning / learning in later life / senior citizen

Artistic education, also including Arts and Crafts and Music
Working language(s): EN
Target Group + Translation:
Teaching 10 young adults from different European countries community arts tools to give new life perspectives to old people in Retirement Homes.
Main activities Programme + Programme translation:
Learners with good communication skills in English, who are determined and attached to the cause of elderly and institutionalized individuals, and who have the potential to promote and develop community arts-based initiatives in their local context.
The planned activities are meant to facilitate both learning, and the intercultural and intergenerational experience. The core of activities is represented by workshops of community arts, a form of art techniques defined by the fact that the community/communities are involved in the creative process from the starting point to the final product. In the case of the workshop, the elderly are at the same time authors, subjects and the main audience for the community arts products.
Learners will work together with tutors and the seniors on several community arts activities (collage, drawing, photography etc.). This will give the participants the opportunity to interact with a vulnerable community, to experience the approach of community arts with seniors, to understand at least in part, both the benefits and difficulties of such an endeavour. This hands-on approach will be complemented by activities focusing on theory, reflection and conceptual framing of processes, events and situations resulting from the community arts workings. The theoretical part will focus on presentations regarding methods used by several practitioners (artists, therapists, social workers) in community arts projects with institutionalized individuals. It will expose both methods developed by the 4th Age team and by other Romanian projects. It will focus on working with different categories of institutionalized communities – seniors, people with mental disabilities, homeless children, and prison inmates.
Most activities will take place at the the “Amalia and Chief Rabbi Dr. Moses Rosen” Retirement Home, but we will also spare time for study visits, cultural walks and leisure events, which we will organise in order to give learners the chance to become familiar with the urban environment and to meet peers and other similar inclusive initiatives with an artistic input. Accommodation for the learners will be provided at the Retirement Home, with whom timely practical arrangements will be made.
