WORK: The Youth Department of the city of Bad Oeynhausen is once again putting on a two-week summer camp for 130 children ages 6-13. Local helpers as well as your IJGD group supervise the children. This year, the children will be taken on a phantasy trip to DINO-Land! Here, they will learn lots about dinosaurs and the world these giant prehistoric creatures lived in. Fun games, crafts, and discovery activities await the children, and slowly the playground will turn into an excavation site for dinosaur finds. Your team will also build huts, where the children will learn to build with wood, hammers, and saws. Your supervision will be very important here! Your team will also go on trips and an overnight stay with the children is on the program. Your creativity and ideas are welcome here!

WORK: In Burscheid there are two projects that we need your help for! In an evangelical nursing home, your team will create a festival for the residents there. The festival will be complete with a program, decorations, and your team will prepare it all together. Please bring music for dancing and singing, songs, pictures, traditional clothing, costumes, and other things that are typical of your home country, including recipes and other specialties. Your second project will take place in the ecological experiment workshop. Here, children and youth have the opportunity to experience nature responsibly. During a two week camp for elementary school children, your group will create various game areas outside, both with and for the children. Your team will gain experience in working with various materials such as wood, clay, straw, etc, as you collect them and create play areas out of them. Environmental knowledge and creativity will be taught and learned here. There will be plenty of sports and games here!

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of German is an advantage but not a requirement. You should be good at working with children, be physically fit since you will do construction work, and bring enough changes of clothes that can get dirty.

IJGD 15240 CHILDREN'S ADVENTURE CAMP Location: Wismar

WORK: Do you enjoy working with children and want to work with others to ensure that children in Wismar and Grevenmuehlen have an unforgettable summer? In Wismar and Grevenmuehlen, 40-100 children between the ages of 6 and 12 take part in a large summer camp each day. Every day has a new motto. Help with your ideas and your love of creative and active games, so that this is an unforgettable experience for both the children and your team. With games, songs, and crafts from your home countries, the camp will have an international flair. During the first week, you will prepare the activities, where your creative ideas are much appreciated. After that, you will work with the children, one week in Wismar, and for one week you will commute by bus to Grevesmuehlen, about 25 minutes away.

ACCOMODATION: You will stay at the “Wagenburg”, a small camp with wagons, a grill, and a clay oven.

You will also have the opportunity to take trips, such as to Lubeck and Rostock, or Poel Island.

IJGD 25333 PLAYGROUND OF DREAMS Location: Bielefeld

WORK: Bielefeld needs your help to clean and renovate a local playground to make it useable for the local children again! Your team will fix the equipment, sandbox, and other areas in need of repair, redo the ground of the playground, construct pathways, and new security measures for the children. Your creative side is also needed, since you will paint the new equipment however your group wishes! At the end, there will be a dedication ceremony with the children and their parents in the area, which your group will organize.

FREE TIME: Bielefeld, a city with 300,000 residents, is located at the edge of the Teutoburg Forest. There are travel opportunities to local cities such as Hanover, Osnabruck, and Munster.

IJGD 75103 DO YOUR PART FOR INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING II Location: Berlin

WORK: During the first week, your group will take part in an intensive German language course (2 x 90 minutes per day), which will teach you language used in everyday situations, as well as improve your general German skills. Your language instructors are native speakers and have experience in teaching German as a foreign language. During the first week, they are also part of your group. During the second and third weeks, your team will help maintain gravestones of war victims, in Reinickendorf, located on the north side of Berlin. The people buried here are German as well as non-German soldiers and civilians, for whom a special cemetery was built. Tasks will include renovating the lawns and mowing them, as well as cleaning the gravestones and other concrete structures.

ACCOMODATION: In the “PallasT” Youth Center, where you will share rooms and sleep on the floor.

IJGD 15233 NATURE PRESERVATION ON WINDERATTER LAKE Location: Husby

WORK: In the Winderatter See-Kielstau Nature Preservation Area, a European Fauna-Flora Habitat Area near the Flensburg Fjords, there are lakes, wild graze land with Scottish Highland Cattle, moors, and light forests. Your team will be doing its part to maintain the diverse species that live in this habitat. Tasks include trearing down and building bridges in the wetlands as well as building a refuge hut. The work will be led by at team from the Integrative Station at Gelting Birk as well as an organization dedicated to the lake and its nature and environment. WORK: At the Heiligensee Cemetery, located on the northwest side of Berlin, your team will help maintain the gravestones of those who have fallen in war. German as well as non-German soldiers and civilians are buried here, where a special cemetery was built for them. Your team will undertake various tasks, such as renovating the lawns, cutting the grass, and cleaning the gravestones. Additionally, your team will help repair the border to this section of the cemetery. You will work four days per week, so you also have the opportunity to discover Berlin and the surrounding area, including through theme based city tours (culture, history, East-West, etc).

IJGD 25307 LET RIVERS FLOW, ORCHIDS GROW, BUTTERFLIES FLY Location: Ehingen (donau)

WORK: Your task with the forester, who specializes in nature preservation in this area, is to maintain and restore a moist biotope (ponds and creeks), maintain a grassy area near Mochental. You will cut the plants free, repair a dam if needed, and remove creeping plants so that the many native animal and plant species can continue to grow. Juniper areas arose in the past through grazing sheep and goats, and are the most diverse biotope in central Europe. Due to this, they are often preserved areas. They are in danger of growing wild again. You will remove (thorny) bushes and trees to give the rare animals, insects, and birds space and light to live. You will be led by an expert forester, forestry students, and other experts in the field.

ACCOMODATION: You will be staying in a group room at the Mochental Castle with cots. There is a separate common area with a kitchen.

WORK: If you yearn to combine adventure and nature with theater and construction, then you’re in the right spot! During a three day trip to Poel Island, you can sail with a 2-mast boat, ride bikes, and spend the night together on the beach. If the weather doesn’t cooperate enough to have a sailing trip, we will travel there with kayaks and canoes. Before, during, and after this trip, you and your team can use your creativity as well as practical abilities in self-organized workshops and study theater and circus performance. Additionally, you will work in the vegetable garden and undertake small repair tasks in your accommodation. You will learn how to climb in a high ropes course and then help with a tree house platform. During these activities, you will learn about various languages, cuisines, cultures, as well as creative and practical tasks. You will be assisted by experienced group leaders.

IJGD 15216 URBAN AND INTERCULTURAL GARDEN IN HANOVER Location: Hanover

WORK: Project: Are you interested in intercultural and urban gardening? Then you’re in the right spot in this project! The organization “International District Garden” (Internationale StadtteilGaerten e.V., www.isghannover.de) has created community gardens, where families of various nationalities can plant vegetables, herbs, and flowers, and come into contact with each other. During the first two camp weeks, your team will help with various gardening and manual labor tasks, such as building small huts or tables, flower bed edging, a natural playground, and with an upcycling project.

Study Part: During these three weeks, there will be a study section on ecology and sustainability, complete with visits and trips. One trip will include the Climate House in Bremerhaven (Klimahaus Bremerhaven), and another will include an exhibit on people and consumption (KonsuMenschspaziergang) in Hanover. Additionally, discussions about sustainable projects in your home countries will complete the study section.

IJGD 15236 MEETING AT THE WALDHEIM ORGANIZATION, WITH THEATER Location: Etelsen

Dates: 25/07-15/08/15 Type: SOCI , Age: 16 ans. 12 VOLS

WORK: Under the expert leadership of a theater teacher and an art teacher, your team will work with the residents of the Waldheim Organization, a home for people with disabilities, to create a drama and a set for it. Your team will experiment with interactions dealing with voice and movement, and involve the residents in improvisations and role-plays of scenes. You will also plan and create the set, masks, and costumes together. This is an ambitious project for all that wish to work together with people with disabilities, be creative, and would love to put on a final performance during the last camp week. Since the performance will be on August 14, departure before August 15 is not possible. Through celebrating together, and participating in other activities, you can also play a part in the residents’ free time here.

IJGD 25326 SUMMER CAMP FUN IN THE WOODS! Location: Ingelheim

Dates: 25/07-15/08/15 Type: ENVI , Age: 18 ans. 14 VOLS

WORK: Are you a nature lover? Then you’re in the right spot! Here, you can spend three weeks living and working in the forest. Your team will help with nature preservation tasks such as maintenance on plants and forests, building and repairing protective fences, as well as caring for biotopes. You’ll learn plenty here about the forest ecosystem!

ACCOMODATION: In a rurally located community center in the forest.

Catering: Some meals will be provided. Your group will cook dinner as a group.

IJGD 25334 HELP PRESERVE SPECIES DIVERSITY Location: Wesel

Dates: 25/07-15/08/15 Type: ENVI , Age: 16 ans. 18 VOLS

WORK: Together with the Wesel Biological Station, your team will undertake various nature preservation measures. Your group will help the LIFE European Nature Preservation Organization by supporting their effort to maintain historic oak forests, wetlands, meadows, and grassy areas. Additionally, foreign invasive species need to be removed in order to maintain the natural species diversity of the region. The Biological Station will also organize nature excursions, such as a boat tour or a bat observation if the group is interested.

ACCOMODATION: You will be staying in a simple hut, which is located somewhat rurally in the forest

LANGUAGE: ENGLISH

LOCATION: North Rhine-Westphalia; Wesel 18 km, Dusseldorf 65 km, Munster 70 km

FREE TIME: You will be staying in the middle of the forest, where your group can grill and sit around the fire in the evenings. It is a 1.5 km walk, or about 25 minutes, to the nearest city, Schermbeck. From here, you can go on hikes, bike, and canoe on the Lippe River. In the area you can visit the Colonia Ulpia Traiana, the third largest Roman city north of the Alps, and Germany’s largest open air museum. Trips to nearby cities such as Essen and Dortmund are also possible. Cities such as Cologne, Dusseldorf, and Munster are also great for day trips. The Hanseatic City of Wesel offers plenty of leisure activities as well. On the first weekend in August there will be a large city festival with a carnival and plenty of live bands.

IJGD 25338 EXPERIENCE NATURE AND ADVENTURE WITH CHILDREN Location: Essen

WORK: The Youth Help Essen organization is a sponsor of the youth farm. Here, children and youth have the opportunity to learn how to work with nature responsibly. About 100 animals live on the large farm, and enjoy being cared for and fed by the children and youth. In summer, a summer camp takes place. Tasks include working with the animals, planting and harvesting in the garden, and working with the children. There may also be an additional ecological project. The day’s tasks will be announced daily; you should be flexible and enjoy working outdoors.
