WORK: During the first week, your group will take part in an intensive German language course (2 x 90 minutes per day), which will teach you language used in everyday situations, as well as improve your general German skills. Your language instructors are native speakers and have experience in teaching German as a foreign language. During the first week, they are also part of your group. During the second and third weeks, your team will help maintain gravestones of war victims, in Reinickendorf, located on the north side of Berlin. The people buried here are German as well as non-German soldiers and civilians, for whom a special cemetery was built. Tasks will include renovating the lawns and mowing them, as well as cleaning the gravestones and other concrete structures.

WORK: The Prussian Castle and Garden Organization maintains and administers the countless historic castles and parks in the Berlin-Brandenburg Region. Potsdam is the focus of this 300 year old cultural landscape, with its historic facilities, including the castle and park of Sans Souci. Your team will be involved with the diverse gardening tasks in the Sans Souci park and can therefore get a peek into this diverse work field. In the Charlottenhof Park, created in 1883 by P.J. Lenne, your group will help maintain paths, flower beds, and lawns, securing the maintenance of these gardens. With your various work site, your team will learn how diverse these gardens and parks really are!

IJGD 75113 YOUR PIECE IS MISSING IN THE HIKING NETWORK! Location: Rangsdorf

WORK: Rangsdorf is located 15 km south of Berlin, and is a small town with 11,000 residents and plenty of nature, located at the edge of Rangsdorf Lake. In order to make this landscape accessible to visitors, an interconnected hiking trail network has been under construction since 2005, and is constantly being expanded. Your tasks will mainly include maintenance, repair, and construction on various pieces of the trail, removing trash, and maintaining bordering wooded and field areas. Small tasks including building benches and observation points, signs, or bird houses may also need to be done. Most of the work will be done by hand. Partners such as the forester, nature preservation organization, and local workers will assist with difficult tasks. At the end, you will present your results to the community.
ACCOMODATION: In an elementary school. A grill and a volleyball court are located in the yard. You will bike the five kilometers to and from your work site.

IJGD 25302 ON THE RIGHT PATH TO THE ALPS! Location: Freising
Dates: 01/08-30/08/15 Type: ENVI , Age: 16 ans. 10 VOLS
WORK: Your team is going to help the area mow large areas and receive hay. The fields are located on an angle at times and are difficult to reach with machines. In orchards, your team will also help improve fences and protect the trees from sheep. Additionally, you will maintain neglected grasslands in order to give endangered plant and animal species a habitat. Small trees need to be taken out so that they do not spread in this special biotope. This camp will teach your group plenty about nature preservation! For one week, your team will be at the ‘Freising Domberg’, where you will secure trails and protect them from erosion, and improve a sheep shelter and fences. An absolute highlight for nature lovers is a three day trip to the edge of the Alps, where you can go for plenty of hikes. Be sure to bring mountain/hiking boots!
Note for the project: We look forward to having you if you truly enjoy spending your time in nature, hiking, and riding a bike! A bit of weather resistance is needed for the tasks outside. If you enjoy cooking, that is an advantage since your team will prepare its own meals and grocery shop. You may even get some free groceries from the Freising shops. The tasks will be led by experts who will teach you plent about nature and the effect of your work. You will work from 8:00-15:00.

FREE TIME: You can reach Freising by bike along the Isar River. From there, you can take the train to Munich, where you will have plenty of opportunities to visit the English Garden and the famous Munich Hofbrauhaus. Due to its location, the largest hops growing area in the world, there are plenty of typical German beer gardens in the area! You will be provided with bikes, but they may be in need of some repair first. Hikes with the expert leaders in the area make it quick and easy to explore the area!

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: You must be able to ride a bike and it is absolutely necessary to bring ankle high mountain shoes/hiking boots and rainproof, warm clothing. You will need them for the project as well as hiking in the area.

WORK: Deggendorf will host a summer camp for children ages 7-14 from August 10-21. On a field, children will build their own wooden huts and look forward to the games, sports, and creative activities you will have ready for them. Please bring lots of ideas from home! The camp will take place outside no matter the weather, so please bring appropriate clothing. On August 7, there will be a preparatory meeting with the camp leaders. Your work times will be 8:30-17:30. After discussion, the team may divide into small groups. The days before the children arrive will serve as preparation time together.

WORK: caring for trees, removing small trees along a small pond so that other trees have more space to grow, as well as building protective fences around new trees. Your group will work with hand saws, hammers, nails, shovels, hoes, and spades. Your team will also remove invasive species to preserve the natural habitat of the area. Shovels and hoes will be useful to dig drainage areas along ponds and paths. Tree stands will also be built.
ACCOMODATION: Your accommodation is located in the Pfaelzer Wald Biosphere Reserve. Surrounded by fortresses and a beautiful forest landscape, you will be picked up each morning by the forester. In the forest, your group will do forestry and nature preservation. Accommodation will be in shared rooms in a reserve.

FREE TIME: In this camp, you will mostly have the chance to be in nature, hike, and visit the nearby fortresses. Bikes will be provided so you have the chance to better get to know the area. The Dahn cliffs provide an excellent climbing area, and in the Biosphere house you can learn about the forest ecosystem. A field is located next to your accommodation where you can play games, and includes a fire pit. In Bad Bergzabern and in Dahn there are pools and cafes. On the weekends, you can take trips to France (Strasbourg), or Karlsruhe, Speyer, and Mannheim. These trips are only possible on the weekends!

WORK: Make your own film! This you can do in this international media camp. Learning by doing is the idea, and so you will work in small groups to brainstorm and experiment. After an introduction to the technology, you will develop a story line and then you will already grab the camera! Doesn’t matter if you want to make a short film with you as the star or create a documentary—you can bring in your own ideas and stories! Your imagination has no boundaries here! Along with the camera work, your team will also learn various software types as well as how to edit your films on the computer and add sound. Your team will be supported by two experienced media educators from the organization “Blickwechsel e.V.”. The results will be in a blog on the internet.

WORK: Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg is the largest river island in Europe and is a multicultural district in change. Various small land large projects and events such as IBA, IGS, and Dockwille have had a major impact on various locations, people, and topics in the district. Additonally, the currently increasing number of refugees staying here keeps the residents busy. Your team will work in this media workshop to depict what is special about Wilhelmsburg and how the residents and workers in the district deal with these sociocultural and social changes and challenges on film. You will be led by experienced media educators, where you will develop interview ideas, learn how to use the camera, and to cut/edit scenes. At the end of the project, you will show your results in a show, created by you, on the Hamburg public television channel TIDE TV. In contrast to other media workshops IJGD provides, we are providing the topic for you. Look at the websites listed below and think about what you would like to depict on film, whether it be projects, events, sociocultural and community changes, etc, that can influence the district. It is our hope that you capture many different voices and pictures, that you believe in giving others a voice that would seldom otherwise be heard.

WORK: “iDevices”, such as iphones, ipads, etc, dominate our lives more and more. The global computer networks have become our cyber spines. Are we somehow addicted to these devices and the internet? We have already lost control over our data, but can we still control our behavior? On the other hand, the “agricultural industry 2.0” controls our food production. Here, the internet is also the spine. What will happen when the networks break down, or an environmental catastrophe decimate our harvests and infrastructure? Are we, after monocultures, extinction of plants and animals, and global warming still in a position to return to a subsistent lifestyle? In the study part of this camp, we will explore the dimensions of our ‘iDevices’ and discuss the topic critically. During the work part of the camp, we will work to maintain the infrastructure of the educational center. The wonderful grounds of the “Bildungsstaette Bahnhof Goehrde”, the educational center, is a learning center for socially critical and ecological thinking and behavior. All in all, we will try to rid ourselves of modern, technical controlling structures, try alternative ways of living, and work on the utopia of a subsistent, independent social room.

WORK: In Urensollen, your help is needed to turn an old transformer station into an animal protection tower. Together, you will work on renovating the transformer station so that it can be the crown jewel of the city. At the same time, it will serve as a new home for various animals such as barn owls, house martins, swifts, bats, bees, and insects, since the nest areas will be protected. Your team will also plant trees and bushes to beautify the area. As a special challenge, an old basement is in need of your ideas and help.

You will be led by expert media educators and can learn plenty about the media work with video and TV. Previous knowledge is not required, but can be useful.
