Fun games, crafts, and discovery activities await the children, and slowly the playground will turn into an excavation site for dinosaur finds. Your team will also build huts, where the children will learn to build with wood, hammers, and saws. Your supervision will be very important here! WORK: In Burscheid there are two projects that we need your help for! In an evangelical nursing home, your team will create a festival for the residents there. The festival will be complete with a program, decorations, and your team will prepare it all together. Please bring music for dancing and singing, songs, pictures, traditional clothing, costumes, and other things that are typical of your home country, including recipes and other specialties. Your second project will take place in the ecological experiment workshop. Here, children and youth have the opportunity to experience nature responsibly. During a two week camp for elementary school children, your group will create various game areas outside, both with and for the children. Your team will gain experience in working with various materials such as wood, clay, straw, etc, as you collect them and create play areas out of them. Environmental knowledge and creativity will be taught and learned here. There will be plenty of sports and games here!

WORK: Your task with the forester, who specializes in nature preservation in this area, is to maintain and restore a moist biotope (ponds and creeks), maintain a grassy area near Mochental. You will cut the plants free, repair a dam if needed, and remove creeping plants so that the many native animal and plant species can continue to grow. Juniper areas arose in the past through grazing sheep and goats, and are the most diverse biotope in central Europe. Due to this, they are often preserved areas. They are in danger of growing wild again. You will remove (thorny) bushes and trees to give the rare animals, insects, and birds space and light to live. During a three day trip to Poel Island, you can sail with a 2-mast boat, ride bikes, and spend the night together on the beach. Before, during, and after this trip, you and your team can use your creativity as well as practical abilities in self-organized workshops and study theater and circus performance. Additionally, you will work in the vegetable garden and undertake small repair tasks in your accommodation. You will learn how to climb in a high ropes course and then help with a tree house platform. WORK: Project: Are you interested in intercultural and urban gardening? Then you’re in the right spot in this project! The organization “International District Garden” (Internationale StadtteilGaerten e.V., www.isghannover.de) has created community gardens, where families of various nationalities can plant vegetables, herbs, and flowers, and come into contact with each other. During the first two camp weeks, your team will help with various gardening and manual labor tasks, such as building small huts or tables, flower bed edging, a natural playground, and with an upcycling project.
Study Part: During these three weeks, there will be a study section on ecology and sustainability, complete with visits and trips. One trip will include the Climate House in Bremerhaven (Klimahaus Bremerhaven), and another will include an exhibit on people and consumption (KonsuMenschspaziergang) in Hanover. Additionally, discussions about sustainable projects in your home countries will complete the study section.

WORK: Under the expert leadership of a theater teacher and an art teacher, your team will work with the residents of the Waldheim Organization, a home for people with disabilities, to create a drama and a set for it. Your team will experiment with interactions dealing with voice and movement, and involve the residents in improvisations and role-plays of scenes. You will also plan and create the set, masks, and costumes together. This is an ambitious project for all that wish to work together with people with disabilities, be creative, and would love to put on a final performance during the last camp week. Since the performance will be on August 14, departure before August 15 is not possible. Through celebrating together, and participating in other activities, you can also play a part in the residents’ free time here.

WORK: Together with the Wesel Biological Station, your team will undertake various nature preservation measures. Your group will help the LIFE European Nature Preservation Organization by supporting their effort to maintain historic oak forests, wetlands, meadows, and grassy areas. Additionally, foreign invasive species need to be removed in order to maintain the natural species diversity of the region. The Biological Station will also organize nature excursions, such as a boat tour or a bat observation if the group is interested.

In the area you can visit the Colonia Ulpia Traiana, the third largest Roman city north of the Alps, and Germany’s largest open air museum. Trips to nearby cities such as Essen and Dortmund are also possible. Cities such as Cologne, Dusseldorf, and Munster are also great for day trips. The Hanseatic City of Wesel offers plenty of leisure activities as well. On the first weekend in August there will be a large city festival with a carnival and plenty of live bands.

WORK: The Youth Help Essen organization is a sponsor of the youth farm. Here, children and youth have the opportunity to learn how to work with nature responsibly. About 100 animals live on the large farm, and enjoy being cared for and fed by the children and youth. In summer, a summer camp takes place. Tasks include working with the animals, planting and harvesting in the garden, and working with the children. There may also be an additional ecological project. The day’s tasks will be announced daily; you should be flexible and enjoy working outdoors.
