Summary
We can understand through article that course materials such as the syllabus and textbook set the tone for a course. Therefore, careful planning must go into developing a syllabus and choosing a textbook. An effective syllabus can increase the number of successful students and decrease the number of problems that arise throughout a course by communicating the instructor’s expectations for students in the course. A syllabus usually includes standard information like the logistics of when, where, and who; a well-written syllabus also answers questions like what and why.
Student learning correlates more with the textbook than the instructor; consequently, choosing a textbook is an important aspect of teaching a course. The most critical component to consider is whether or not the textbook supports the course objectives. This article covers these aspects, as well as provides guidelines to assist in developing a syllabus and choosing a textbook.
Moreover, we often use curriculum and syllabus as interchangeable terms without knowing that they are entirely different. Before pursuing an academic program, we can understand its structure in a more detailed way if we know the difference between syllabus and curriculum. In short, there is a close and interrelated relationship between Curriculum, Syllabus and Textbooks because these three are essential component of an academic session. Let’s understand this relationship in further detail:
Curriculum defines the intricate structure of how the syllabus, teaching periods and prescribed study materials would be, syllabus includes all the chapters and topics in detail along with the reference books, study guides and further academic instructions and then textbook follows all the essentials mentioned in both curriculum and syllabus for an academic semester or year.
Lesson plans for a certain subject are part of the curriculum, but detailed in terms of chapters and topics in a syllabus while further studied through textbooks. So acquiring important information about them can come in handy in each teacher's career to communicate with students in an effective way.
