When you see the trailer(预告片) for Coming Home, Zhang Yimou’s latest project, you may not be attracted by it at first, due to the film’s senior cast and historic setting.
But rest assured, Coming Home will draw you in with its emotionally charged story of love, joy and sorrow.
The movie follows a devoted couple, Lu Yanshi (Chen Daoming) and Feng Wanyu (Gong Li), who are separated when Lu is arrested as a political prisoner. Released during the last days of the “cultural revolution” (1966-76), Lu finally returns home only to find that his beloved wife has amnesia and is unable to recognize him. As a stranger in his broken family, Lu decides to resurrect their past together and reawaken his wife’s memory.
Just like the story suggests, Coming Home is a tearjerker. But different from those movies that make the audience cry by being evocative(唤起共鸣的), such as Feng Xiaogang’s Aftershock or Pixar’s Toy Story 3, director Zhang’s idea of moving the audience is quite special, and makes the most of his delicate skills.
In Coming Home, Zhang deals with a dramatic story in such a quiet way that the audience’s emotions are drawn out little by little by the main characters, as they struggle in pain while their heroic inner strength shines.
So, when you cry — and very likely you will — you will understand why: Because you wish a future happiness for the characters, and maybe because you can imagine the story having happened to your grandparents.
Another impressive aspect is how Zhang uses “amnesia”, a narrative technique that’s more common in romantic comedies. For that, he has Gong Li to thank the most. Gong, one of Zhang’s longtime collaborators, knows exactly what the director wants. With a limited number of lines throughout the film, Gong is fully committed to her character and touches the audience with great facial expressions and subtle changes of emotion.
Maybe now you understand why everyone can relate to the film. Although it reflects on a big era(时代) through the story of a small family, the era is only a backdrop. What moves the young audience here is love, and you will leave the cinema with a new understanding of it.
Tell us what you think about Zhang Yimou’s new film Coming Home.
63. Which of the following is likely to attract the audience most about this film?
A. Its cast. B. It’s specific effects. C. Its director. D. Its story.
64. The passage is most probably ______.
A. a film ad B. a film poster C. a film review D. a film script
65. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. Gong Li is good at body language
B. Feng directs films the same way as Zhang
C. the ages of the actors in the film counts most
D. the film is set in the “cultural revolution”
66. Everyone can relate to the film because _____.
A. the director casts the actors that are popular with us all
B. it interprets the theme of love that is shared by all
C. the “cultural revolution” has left deep scars on us all
D. everyone shows sympathy to a patient with amnesia

An Israeli surgeon’s dexterity(精湛的技术) treating the largest and most serious wounds has brought him to Sichuan province again and again, he tells Liu Zhihua.
Moris Topaz, head of the plastic surgery unit of the well-known Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera, Israel, finally had a good sleep on the flight from New York to China recently. The 63-year-old usually sleeps only three hours a day but that’s enough, he says, to give him plenty of energy for his work.
On this, his most recent trip to China, he was part of a delegation led by Ronni Gamzu, director-general of Israel’s Ministry of Health, which aimed to strengthen the cooperation of health communities in the two countries.
While “cooperation” may sound vague to outsiders, Sichuan resident Gong Fangxue has a very clear idea what that word means to ordinary people.
If not for TopCloser, a groundbreaking method for closing large wounds that Topaz applied in her operation, Gong probably would have died from a huge fatal tumor.
“It was a unique case over a very big tumor. Usually with these kinds of tumors, we have to do complicated surgeries with skin grafts or flaps,” Topaz says.
“This time, we actually stretched the skin in a way we hadn’t done before.”
Gong, 40, found a suddenly fast-growing bump on her right shoulder in 2009. The resident of Deyang was diagnosed with a fatal spindle cell tumor.
Although it didn’t spread to other parts of the body, the cancerous bump grew very fast.
Over the next two years, Gong underwent several removal surgeries, but the condition always recurred shortly after the treatments, and the tumor grew bigger and bigger.
Late last year, Gong came to the People’s Hospital of Deyang City, after many other hospitals, including big ones in Beijing, refused to treat her. By that time, the tumor had become half as big as Gong’s head, making her head lean toward the left. It had become difficult for her to move her neck. Worse, the tumor stretched the skin so far that at any time, the blood vessels could be broken, potentially leading to massive bleeding.
Removing the tumor was urgent but unavoidable major bleeding and nerve damage could cause death. An operation wound so large would take a long time to heal with traditional wound-closure methods, such as skin flaps, but Gong needed quick healing so she could have radiotherapy as soon as possible and prevent a relapse.
Luckily, the hospital had established a relationship with Topaz, who has superb experience and skills to treat such complicated conditions, Fan adds.
On Dec 13, 2013, Topaz operated on Gong with physicians from the hospital. In a four-hour operation, they removed the tumor tissues carefully, and used the TopClosure system to connect the two edges of existing skin with a special plastic thread, eliminating the need for skin-implant reconstruction.
The second day after the operation, Gong felt her pain easing. Within two weeks, the wound healed, and she was able to have radiotherapy. Now regular checkups indicate she is recovering from the cancer.
It was the first time in the world that such a large wound was healed without skin flaps and implants, according to Li Yongzhong, director of the hospital’s burns and plastic surgery department.
But that’s just a sample of what Topaz has done to strengthen medical cooperation between China and Israel.
67. What probably enables Moris Topaz to sleep so little and still keep energetic?
A. His excellent skill in treatment. B. His anxiety about the hospital.
C. His edge in age. D. His devotion to his work.
68. All the following contribute to the successful surgery on Gong Fangxue except ______.
A. the medical method of TopCloser
B. the diagnosis of the disease in 2009
C. the superb experience and skills of Topaz
D. the cooperation between the Israeli and Chinese doctors
69. In the 4th paragraph from the bottom, the underlined word eliminating probably means _____.
A. removing B. producing C. realizing D. ignoring
70. What is the paragraph to be continued probably about?
A. Topaz’s voluntary work in China. B. Topaz’s further study on medicine.
C. Ronni Gamzu’s visit to China. D. Ronni Gamzu’s contributions to China.
第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Parents all around the world want the best for their children, especially when it comes to education. Today we will talk about a program that educates children with an international focus.
World economies are becoming more and more interconnected. And people are moving around the world in search of personal and professional opportunities. With this global way of living becoming more common, an international approach to education seems like a good one. The goal of the International Baccalaureate Organization is to create “Students of the World.”
The International Baccalaureate Organization was founded in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland. The IB organization works with schools in 147 countries to offer programs for students 3 to 19 years old. These programs, it says, “help to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.”
The organization says that IB programs are in nearly 3,800 schools worldwide. The majority of these schools offer IB diploma programs. High school students have to complete six courses, pass exams and write a 20-page paper to earn an IB diploma. And schools accepted into the IB program are expected to “walk the walk and not just talk the talk.”
Students are given opportunities to attend events that open their eyes to a larger world. There are IB workshops and conferences held all over the world.
One such event was a five-day conference at the University of British Columbia in Canada. The conference was about “The New Sustainability: Making Things Better, Not Just Less Bad.”? Three hundred students from 13 counties attended.
One of the speakers was Drew Deutsch, director of IB Americas. He says the conference was meant for students not only to learn about the environment, but also to become more international in their thinking and develop lasting relationships.
DREW DEUTSCH: “We want to send the students back to their schools to highlight issues surrounding protecting the environment, but also make sure that these students become more students of the world, and that they form bonds with peers their own age from around the world. And, obviously, with social networking and the tools that are available to students today, we expect that they will have formed these bonds really for life.”
Seventeen-year-old Itzel Chavez was one of 21 IB students who received scholarships to attend the conference.
ITZEL CHAVEZ: “I really wanted to go. So I applied for a scholarship and I had to write an essay. And in my school they chose one person, and I got chosen for the scholarship. So I got to go.”
She says the main speakers would describe a sustainability program or tell how a special project improved the environment in their community. Then the students had to choose a project to present to the conference.
ITZEL CHAVEZ: “We would get into groups of about nineteen or twenty students and we would have to come up with a project for the end of the week that showed what we learned.”

W: Oh, no. Then how did you get out?
M: I called another colleague who was in the office next door. I had to push the key under the door for him so he could let me out.
W: That’s funny. I’ve never heard of anyone getting locked in rather than locked out.
M: I know. My wife laughed at me all evening.

W. Could I see your manager, please? I have a complaint to make.
M: Yes. I’m the manager here. What can I do for you ma’am?
W: Did you have the room checked before we arrived?
M: Which room are you in?
W: 618. The toilet doesn’t work.
M: I’m sorry. I’ll attend to it right now. The housekeeper usually checks every room before new guests arrive, but we have been very busy recently.
W: I understand, but this is a responsibility of your business. I never expected this sort of thing to happen.
M: I do apologize. This is most unusual. Why don’t we move you to room 309? It has a beautiful view of the sea.
W: That would be fine. Thanks for your help.
M: It’s my pleasure, ma’am.

W: English Language Center. May I help you?
M: Yes. I’ll calling to find out more information about what kind of courses you offer.
W: Well, first of all, the purpose of our program is to provide language learning opportunities, whether a student’s goal is to master basic language skills for his or her job, or to study to enter a US college or university.
M: OK. I am actually calling for my niece who is interested in attending a US university.
W: Oh, good. We provide all kinds of instruction to prepare students to go abroad, from basic courses to specialized classes such as computers and business English.
M: Great. What is your deadline for signing up for the next term?
W: No later than two months before the term begins.
M: OK, and what is the charge for a full-time student?
W: Two thousand five hundred dollars.
M: And how does one apply?
W: It’s best to fill out a form on our website. The first 50 applicants will get a 10% discount.
M: Great. Thank you for your help.

M: Susan, have you ever watched a Chinese kung fu movie?
W: Of course! They are terrific – so magical! I love Jet Li’s movies. What about you?
M: I love Jet Li too. I have almost all of his movies, including his Huang Feihong series. You know, I am a member of the Students’ Wushu Association. We are preparing a wushu show for our New Year’s party. Would you like to join us?
W: I’d love to! But I don’t know how to do wushu, and there is only one and a half months until the New Year – I don’t think that’s enough time to learn, is it?
M: That’s OK. One month and a half months is enough for you to learn the basic movements. It would be great to have you with us on the show.
W: Sounds great! Will I learn any of the moves that Jet Li did in his movies?
M: No, you know there are many schools or styles of kung fu. Jet Li uses many styles in the movies. We can’t learn that much. What we’re going to perform is some taijiquan.
W: Oh, anything is great! I’m just glad to learn some Chinese kung fu. Thanks for asking me.
M: I’m glad you want to join us! I have some pictures of kung fu moves. Do you want to look at them? I can tell you more about kung fu. What do you think?
W: Good idea, but I think I’d better buy some DVDs first and watch the movements closely. Then it will be easier to practise with you.

Today all the students in my school had a heated discussion about whether we students should wear school uniforms or not. There were three clear opinions on this question.
80% of the students think school uniforms are a bad idea. They think all school uniforms are of the same style and the same color, which will prevent students from expressing their individual personalities. Besides, some school uniforms are of poor quality, which makes it uncomfortable to wear. However, 15% of the student body think wearing school uniforms is necessary for students. They say it can help schools and teachers to manage the students better, and it can also help some students stop focusing showing off with their clothes. The rest, about 5%, don’t take the issue seriously. They are only concerned whether they can get high grades or not.
As for me, I’m part of the 15%, for the following reasons. First of all, as students, we should obey school rules, which currently require us to wear school uniforms on weekdays. In addition, school uniforms help students avoid comparing themselves to others in terms of clothes. What’s more school uniforms encourage students to feel like part of a bigger group. For all of these reasons, I think that school uniforms are a good idea, and that students ought to wear school uniforms at school.

In recent years, it?has been?a common practice for high schools to hold a rite of passage. As to the phenomenon, opinions vary from person to person. Some people firmly believe that?it’s a must to hold it. For one thing, through the rite of passage, they are convinced that it will make for carrying forward the traditional Chinese culture. For another, it will help teenagers learn to be responsible for both families and society.
However, others take a different side. Just as can be seen, the rite of passage tends to follow a?fixed routine and lack interesting contents. On top of it, the money spent on it is sometimes out of proportion to the result achieved.
As for me, I really applaud activities like it, which is beneficial to our better understanding of sense of responsibility. Besides, what can’t be overlooked is the part it plays in motivating young students to become more self-independent and make greater efforts to realize their own dreams in future. (150?words)
