THIS NEWSLETTER IS A MONTHLY PUBLICATION ISSUED BY AMERICAN LEGION POST #598

13000 Horizon Blvd., Horizon City, Texas 79928 915-852-4823

Commander's Corner
Greetings from the Commander’s Corner

To those that may not know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Scott Hilgenberg.

I am excited about being elected as the Post Commander and even more excited about the awesome Officers and Executive Committee members that have also volunteered to serve. I know that together, with our general membership, SAL, Auxiliary and ALR brothers and sisters we will be able to sustain functions and events that are going well and improve in areas that need it.

I retired from the Army in 2006 after 20 years of service (my first five as a Combat Engineer and my last fifteen as Military Police). I have been active in the American Legion for seven years; starting in Missouri, then here at Horizon City, in Oklahoma, and again here at Post 598.

I am married to a wonderful woman, Rebekah, aka Becki or AWOL to the ALR (we will celebrate 23 years in June). We have two grown children, Jered and Joshua. Both are attending Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. You may remember them, Jered did his Eagle Scout project with Post 58 (rehabilitating the outside) and Joshua did his Eagle Scout project here at Post 598 (rehabilitating the Memorial Wall and surrounding area).

Once again, thank you for your support and continued service within the American Legion.

For God and Country.

 Scott R Hilgenberg

Commander
President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed June 14 as "Flag Day" in 1916.  President Calvin Coolidge issued a similar proclamation in 1927. But it didn't really officially become a holiday until President Harry Truman said so in 1949.

Flag Day is also a time to teach about flag etiquette.  The flag should only be allowed to fly after sunrise and taken down before sunset.  When it is raised or lowered, it must not touch the ground or the deck of a ship.  The flag must be saluted by all that are present.  When the flag is placed at half-mast for the dead, it must be hoisted first to the top of the staff, and then lowered into place.  So the flag goes to the top, then down to half-mast.

From the Auxiliary President

I hope all of you had commemorative Memorial Day. If you missed our ceremony, you missed a very moving and inspirational event. Thanks to all of you who made it so meaningful. And the food was great also.

As you know this is the end of 2012-2013 and June 11 at 7 p.m. we will have our installation and awards Ceremony. I encourage all of you to come and welcome in the new officers and congratulate the honorees.

This is the slate of new Officers that were voted in May 28, 2013

I will be taking another load of clothes and stuff to the Center Against Family Violence at the end of June so just bring it up and leave them at the Post with a brief history of what’s in the bag.

The Auxiliary serves hot sandwiches EVERY 2nd and 5th Friday each Month.

THE AUXILIARY GENERAL MEETING IS THE 4TH TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT 7:00 PM

Next month we will have Flag retirement on June 14, 2013 come on out and join us.
Okay Peoples hope everybody’s doing okay, stay safe and cool, let’s get ready for a very good year.
Thanks again for all your support to our Post,

FOR GOD AND COUTNRY Gracie Titus, club/bar manager.

Legion Family, everyone needs to keep track of when your entity's election of officers will be held because the members elect the one that they want to run their unit whether it is the Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion, American Legion Riders or the Legion. But the important thing is be there and vote and need be take an office and have a say in the operation of your unit instead of letting it go down the tube.

SAL's Scoop…

Sons, with the end of another membership year, it has been an honor to serve as your Squadron Commander and I am looking forward to bigger and better things for 2013-2014. Squadron elections are complete with only a few changes. Congratulations to our new Second Vice Commander Gilbert “G Man” Pedroza and new Squadron Advisor Dale Weaver. Squadron 598 would also like to welcome our new members; Richard Britton Jr.-Elijha Britton-Jered Hilgenberg and Josh Hilgenberg. To all of you that renewed your membership for 2013, THANK YOU!! We now have an active membership of over 60 sons, and all time high!!
On behalf of the officers and members of the Sons, we would like to congratulate all the new officers of American Legion Post 598 as well as The American Legion Riders and look forward to assisting them and the soon to be elected officers of The American Legion Auxiliary in any and all Post endeavors.
Thanks go out to the fifty-plus members that attended our Memorial Day Ceremony. The Post came together to honor the fallen, in what was the largest ceremony that I can remember. It was heartwarming to see members of each entity together again, as a family, as it should be. Kudos to everyone that brought the delicious food and desserts as well. If this was any indication of the coming year, hold on to your hats. It’s going to be AWESOME!!
This month’s SALute goes to the outgoing officers and executive committee of the Post. Thank you for your service.
To those of you who live in Horizon City. I ask that you make a phone call, write a letter or attend a city council meeting and demand to know why the flags at city hall and other city managed buildings were NOT lowered to half-staff on Memorial Day. It is an outrage that a small town like ours, with such a large military population, showed such disregard for the reverence of the day.
On a personal note, I would like to congratulate S.A.L. Evan Skelley who placed 1st in the UIL Math Competition amongst elementary school students in the Socorro Independent School District and to wish Evan and my wife Amy a Happy Birthday this June.
Reminder, S.A.L. 598 serves taco plates with rice & beans and the world’s best salsa on the 3rd Friday of each month beginning at 6:00. Proceeds go to the Child Welfare Foundation. Everything is made fresh to order. Thank you to everyone that supported our dinner in May. Your donations raised over $100 and have us well on our way to our goal of $1000 for the year.

Remember that the SAL meeting has been officially changed to the 3rd Friday of the month to coincide with Taco Night. As always, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions, comments or ideas at:

News from the ALR 598 Director
Hello Riders and fellow Legion members.   I’d like to thank the riders for electing me to represent our organization. It is such an honor to be elected as your next Director. I am humbled that you would place your faith and trust in me. This is a responsibility that I do not take lightly, and I will endeavor to represent you with the utmost transparency and boldness. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. I would like to thank our past Director Mr. Clay Durbin, Georgia Durbin, Marty Martinez and all the other members of ALR 598 for all their hard work and dedication; and I would like to congratulate all the new and returning officers. I have faith that with hard work and joining together our great organization will rise to any occasion.
I would also like to Congratulate Mr. Scott Hilgenberg on being elected the new post Commander and his newly elected board of director’s for Post 598. I know that together they will strive to make our post larger and stronger. I would also like to thank our now past Commander Mr. Lionel (Jubbie) Hartzog and his outgoing board of directors for their hard work and dedication to our post. June brings a sad time for our riders as we will be losing four of our members, Diamond Dave will be heading to Washington, D.C. and dam’ it Janet will be heading to California. They leave us to fulfill their Military commitments. Benito and his wife are moving back to the San Antonio area to be closer to family. We will miss them all very much and we wish them the best. “God Speed”.
The Riders would also like to THANK Post 598 and everyone involved with the USO Run as it was a huge success. We raised a lot of money for the USO and without the support we received from everyone it would not have turned out the way it did. Another special THANKS to Post 598 for a wonderful Memorial Day ceremony and for 2nd Vice Commander Peter “Hillbilly” Cooper for leading the ceremony. It was a fitting tribute to those who have served and/or made the ultimate sacrifice for our GREAT COUNTRY!!
Don’t forget that every Friday night is Poker night and every 4th Friday is ALR Friday Fest night. Our next meeting will be Saturday July, 6th at 10:00 am.

Again, thank you all.
