Coupled Heating/Forming Optimization
of Knitted Reinforced Composites
Résumé
The feasibility of knitted fabric reinforcement for highly flexible composites is investigated for the thermoforming process. The composite sheets are made through compression molding before being shaped. We use thermoplastic elastomers as matrices: Thermoplastic Elastomers and Thermoplastic Olefins. The knit reinforcement is provided by jersey knitted fabrics of polyester fibers. A special attention is drawn to the quality of processed products through the thickness repartition. The knit reinforcement is suitable to improve the latter. Several deformation modes are studied and different behaviors are observed: uniaxial traction, pure shear and biaxial inflation. The interface between the matrix and the reinforcement is a major driver of flexible composite deformations. The IR heating is used to soften the composite prior shaping. The IR heating may be improved in terms of efficiency and cost. The relations between the emitter localizations and temperatures are particularly studied. Simulations of both the IR heating and the deformation or shaping phases are proposed. Hyperelasticity is treated and used for simulation purposes.
