Course Title: PHARMACOLOGICAL SCREENING AND BIOASSAY

Course Objectives The objective of this curriculum is to educate student about the drugs that affect various organ system of human body and how they can be used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes for ailments associated with these system
Pre-requisites: Basic understanding of drug discovery and development process
Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understanding of basics concepts of humane use of animals in biomedical research.

  2. Interpretation of different screening methods for drug development.

  3. Students will get in-depth knowledge of

    1. Alternatives to Animal Screening

    2. Animal models and screening methods I

    3. Drug Administration and Sampling Techniques

    4. Animal Usage Guidelines and General Evaluation Methods

  4. Students will get in-depth knowledge about the available alternatives for animal research with special emphasis on use of PCR, RTPCR and other invitro techniques.

Animal Usage Guidelines and General Evaluation Methods

Experimental Methodologies Involved in the Discovery of Drugs (in vivo, in vitro, ex vivo). Animal Handling and Animal Care Guidelines (CPCSEA, FDA, INSA).



Module II

Drug Administration and Sampling Techniques

Common Laboratory Animals, Breeding Methods, Anaesthesia & Euthanasia of Experimental Animals, Different Routes of Drug Administration. Commonly used Laboratory. Restraining and Blood Collecting Methods.



Module III

Alternatives to Animal Screening

Cell Lines and Other in-vitro Techniques (ELISA, PCR techniques). Transgenic Animals and their Applications in Drug Discovery, Techniques involved in Transgenic Technology and Gene Knockout Animals.



Module IV

Animal models and screening methods I

Drug Screening Methods involved in the Evaluation of Anti-ulcer, Anti-diarrhoeal, Antianginal, Antiarrhythmic, Anti-glaucoma, Anti-cataract, Anti-Platelet, Analgesic, Antipyretic, Hormones of Pituitary, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Adrenal Cortex and Ovary & Testes



Module V

Animal models and screening methods I

Drug Screening Methods involved in the Evaluation of Anti-obesity, Anti-asthmatics drugs, Antifertility, Infertility, Antipsychotics, Antianxiety agents, Nootropics, Antidepressants, Anti-parkinsonian Agents, Anti-Alzheimer’s agent.




Pedagogy for Course Delivery: White board and power point presentation based student learning.

Lab/ Practicals details, if applicable:


  1. Calculation of pA2 value of Atropine and Histamine.

  2. Four point bioassay of 5HT using rat uterus.

  3. Effect of sedatives on motor activity in rodents.

  4. Effects of muscle relaxants on grip strength in rodents.

  5. Effects of various drugs on dog blood pressure and heart rate using simulation software

  6. Effect of various drugs on Rabbits eye (Pupil size, light reflex, corneal reflex, ocular pressure) using simulation software.

  7. Effects of drugs on learning and memory in rodents.

  8. Effect of drugs on rat heart preparation using Langendorff apparatus and Condons’s manometer technique.

  9. Effect of drugs on rat blood pressure using conscious animal
