The above map shows a selection of the village/school locations where our teacher graduates come from. Funded by Kokoda Track Foundation.

  • 330 teachers trained across the Oro Province; they are now eligible for full Government payroll positions and KTF is working with its project partners in the Oro Provincial Government to facilitate their transfer in 2017;

  • 88% of the teachers who participated have been teaching for at least six years in their communities

  • 37% of trainees were female; 63% were male

  • 88% of trainees were working as partially-trained teachers for 6+ years

  • 40% of trainees were working as partially-trained teachers for 11+ years

  • 64% of the trainees had been volunteering in their schools prior to completing the training. The remaining 36% received a small government allowance. All certified graduates will be eligible for Government payroll positions in 2017.

In Oro Province, the birthplace of the KTF, 330 trainees completed the Teach for Tomorrow training in August-September 2016. Trainers from KTF, PNGEI and the Oro Department of Education delivered a 7-week course to partially trained elementary teachers from right across the Province. The training covered the required SIU component and an added Standards Based Curriculum content week. KTF delivered training on a range of cross-cutting issues including Child Protection, Gender Equity, and Inclusive Education, as well as its Making Books programme.

The graduation ceremony attended by Governor Gary Juffa, Governor of Oro Province, Dr Zui Neofa, Director of PNGEI, and Dr Genevieve Nelson, CEO of KTF.

Gulf Province

The above map shows a selection of the village/school locations where our teacher graduates come from. Funded by the Office of the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea.

  • 37 teachers trained across the Gulf Province; they are now eligible for full Government payroll positions and KTF is working with its project partners in the Gulf Provincial Government to facilitate their transfer in 2017;

  • 34% of trainees were female; 66% were male. One reason why this is the case is because women in this region normally stay home to look after the household and support their families and over the past two decades were not supported to train as elementary teachers.

KTF and PNGEI took the Teach for Tomorrow training to remote Gulf Province, where it delivered the training to 37 partially-trained teachers from right across Gulf Province. Delivered in partnership with trainers from the Gulf Provincial Department of Education, our teams supported the trainees to travel into Kerema from very remote regions across the Province and undertake the 6 weeks’ training in location at Kerema Secondary School.

The 37 teachers graduated from the programme in December 2016 at a ceremony attended by Dr Zui Neofa, Director of PNGEI, and Dr Genevieve Nelson, CEO of KTF.

Autonomous Region of Bougainville

The above map shows a selection of the village/school locations where our teacher graduates come from. Funded by Australian High Commission to PNG and Bougainville Copper Ltd.

  • 168 teachers trained across the Gulf Province; they are now eligible for full Government payroll positions and KTF is working with its project partners in the Gulf Provincial Government to facilitate their transfer in 2017;

  • 80% of trainees were female; 20% were male. This is mainly due to the matrilineal society in Bougainville and the fact that more women tend to become teachers than men in this society.

Our last stop in 2016 was the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, where we partnered with the Autonomous Bougainville Government’s Department of Education to co-deliver the Teach for Tomorrow training to 168 trainee elementary teachers from across the region. Once again, trainees travelled from extremely remote places across the island to a central location at the North of the island, Lontis village, where the 6-week training programme was delivered by KTF, PNGEI and ABG trainers.

A key focus on cross-cutting themes was present across the 6 weeks and the trainees produced some extraordinary books that particularly focused on issues around disability and inclusive education and gender empowerment.

The December 2016 ceremony was attended by the ABG Secretary of Education, Tim Bryson, Counsellor Australian High Commission, Mark Hitchcock from Bougainville Copper, Dr Zui Neofa, Director of PNGEI and Dr Genevieve Nelson, CEO of KTF.

The above map shows a selection of the village/school locations where our teacher graduates come from. Funded by Australian High Commission to PNG and Newcrest Mining Ltd.

  • 534 teachers trained across the Morobe Province; they are now eligible for full Government payroll positions in 2017

  • 48% were females; 52% were males.

  • 81% strongly agree to the statement "I am committed to the Teaching Profession"

  • 10% of trainees had a disability.

"Made me become a better teacher, built my confidence as a teacher and also made be believe in my ability as a teacher. Reconfirmed my commitment to the teaching profession, enabled me to confirm my philosophy and empowered me to confidently carry out my role as a teacher.” - Josephine, 33yo female trainee from Hawata

Training was undertaken at a venue in Pileh Village, outside of Lae, between 18 April – 26 May, 2017.

The above map shows a selection of the village/school locations where our teacher graduates come from. Funded by Flight Center Foundation.

  • 12o teachers trained from across Milne Bay Province; they are all now eligible for full Government payroll positions.

  • 47% were female; 53% were male.

“When I return to my school I will be conducting in-service training for my colleagues and will share all the new information and knowledge that I have learnt. KTF’s presentations helped me to plan more child-centred learning activities and we are still talking about how you explained things so clearly to us. KTF has come in a big way to sponsor and run our training and we can not be able to thank you enough.” - Jacklynn, Trainee, West Ferguson Elementary School
Training was undertaken at a community-based training venue in the Esa-ala District from 20 March – 28 April 2017. KTF worked with the teacher trainees to develop books throughout the Teach for Tomorrow training, including books aimed to promote inclusivity and gender equality in the classroom. The Making Books workshops were run by Petra Arifeae (KTF Trainer & Programs Manager) with support from Dr Jennie Bickmore Brand (KTF volunteer) and skills imparted to teachers on how to write, illustrate and create books utilising basic resources.
Teacher’s notes provide the teachers with practical ideas and ways to promote inclusive education and gender equity within their schools and communities and the Making Books workshops were run in parallel to the Inclusive Education and Gender Equity components of the broader training
