Card Player Cruises invites you to visit these and other exotic ports with us!
Copenhagen, Denmark: Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, and the name of the municipality in which it resides. With its population of over 1,200,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in Denmark. Copenhagen is home to the national parliament, government, and monarchy, which are all situated in the heart of the city. Copenhagen was founded around year 1000 by Sweyn I Forkbeard and his son Canute the Great. It was only a fishing village by the name of "Havn" until the middle of the 12th century.
Amalienborg Palace is the winter home of the Danish royal family, and is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. It has four identical facades with rococo interiors; around an octagonal square in the center of the square is a monumental equestrian statue of Amalienborg's founder, King Frederik V. Beautiful architecture makes this area a great photo opportunity.
Copenhagen Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. It was founded by a ornithologist Niels Kjaerbolling in 1859. Copenhagen Zoo is the most visited zoo here in Denmark. The range of animals and the addition of new facilities in recent years makes this place the best in Europe. A great place for the family to spend the day.
Bergen, Norway: Bergen is a metropolis and city in the county of Hordaland, Norway. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway. In 1916 parts of the city center were destroyed by a ruinous fire, the last of numerous such fires during the city's history. During World War II, the city was subjugated on the first day of the German invasion on  April 9,1940, after a brief fight between German ships and Norwegian coastal artillery. On  April 20, 1944, during the German occupation, a Dutch cargo ship anchored off the Bergenhus fortress, loaded with over 120 tons of explosives, blew up, killing at least 150 people and destroying historic buildings. The city was also subject to some allied bombing raids, aiming at German naval installations in the harbor. Some of these led to civilian casualties numbering over 100. Bergen is also known as the gateway to the fjords of Norway.
A very popular tourist attraction is the fish market on the harbor, where you will find the main shopping area around the main square Torgalmenningen. Several old quarters of white, wooden houses surround the center, notably Nordnes, Marken and Sandviken. Nygardshoyden is an attractive area with a large number of brick buildings from 1900. Don’t miss the ride up to Mount Floyen, where you will be rewarded with a marvelous view over the city and the legendary seven mountains. Also visit the aquarium. It has seals, penguins, and fish from the area, or just stroll around in Bergen - it will reveal areas with very differing architecture. Quaint wooden houses are abundant, and patched around central Bergen.
Akureyri, Iceland: The gorgeous Akureyri, Iceland is filled with natural beauty where waterfalls, mountains, volcanic areas, and canyons line the region. The area is also known for its natural Botanical Garden boasting over 7,000 plants! Akureyri was settled around the ninth century snd it has a relatively warm climate. The harbors are full with fish and maritime history. The Old Town area offers a great opportunity to learn the history of Akureyri where the old church, school, and theatres still stand today. The landscape of Akureyri is extremely diverse, and vegetation in many places is especially plentiful. In the more urban areas, there are also interesting natural features, and on the hills of Akureyri there are many intriguing plants.
Make sure you sample some leafbread, the traditional Icelandic Christmas bread. It is extremely thin bread evolved a long time ago in poverty when wheat was very scarce. Step inside the Akureyri Museum where you will find the cultural history of the daily lives of people in the Eyjafjörður district and their industries. You can take a jeep tour to explore the region on an exciting journey around Akureyri, making sure to hit all of the highlights or embark on a boat tour, on the boat Húni II, departing from the harbor by the town center.
Reykjavik, Iceland: Reykjavik is the world’s most northern capital. With this position comes cold and dark winters, but splendid summers filled with nearly 24 hours of daylight. Every weekend is a party in Reykjavik, as the bars and clubs are popular among locals and cruisers. Be sure to head out to one of the city’s many geothermal pools, a very popular gathering place for the city’s locals. Take in a view of the entire city by climbing to the top of Hallgrimskirkja's church tower or get a sense for the unique perspective Icelanders have by attending a show at the National Theater of Iceland. Discover the history of the city by visiting old houses and buildings that now reside at the Reykjavik City Museum.
Halifax, Nova Scotia: Located on the Eastern Coast of Canada, Halifax is known as a city with small town charm. This fun and friendly city is home to several colleges and attractions. In Halifax, a slower pace of life is appreciated, and the bars and cafes are always a great place to unwind with the locals. This port also has an interesting history. It has served as a major spot for cargo ships and had an important role delivering goods to Britain during World War II.
You can learn about immigration to Canada at Pier 21. Halifax served as the entry point for more than a million people seeking to make Canada their new home from 1928 to 1971. Take a stroll through 17 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens at the Halifax Public Gardens where you’ll find statues, fountains, and a quaint gazebo. Visit The Halifax Citadel where you can see re-enactors in period dress. You’ll enjoy learning about Halifax’s maritime history. Take the Alexander Keith Brewery Tour. This is a brewery that began operations in 1863. The tour is led by a guide in period garb - and you’ll get to sample some delightful brews.
