IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

BEING THE FIRST KHUTBAH FOR THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM, 21/MUHARRAM/1436AH (14/NOVEMBER/2014CE)

THE GENERAL PECULIARITIES OF ISLAM

All praises are due to Allah, I testify there is no god but Allah alone, He has no associate, and I testify that Muhammad (pbuh) is the servant of Allah and His messenger. May Allah bestow peace and blessings on him (pbuh), his families, pious companions and all those who follow his guidance till the day of recompense.

Thereafter,

O people, I enjoin you and myself to fear Allah, in the secret and the open. Allah says:

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].. (3: 102)

Dear faithful, two sermons ago were exclusively dedicated to lessons from the Hirah titled- “THE HIJRAH: LESSONS AND EXHORTATIONS”. Insha Allah we will from commence another series devoted to the General Islamic Peculiarities. These are those distinguishing characteristics of Islam that separate it from other ideology or religion-which include- Godliness, Comprehensiveness, Justly balanced, humaneness, and Appropriateness with time and space … therefore today the topic will be directed on the first peculiarity- Godliness.

Understanding the Rabbaniyyah concept:

Rabbaniyyah is an artificial verbal noun ascribed to Ar-Rabb which is The Lord, An alif and Nun was added to Ar-Rabb for emphasis in the grammatical structure. The word Ar-Rabb in meaning is related to nurturing and guardianship. Ar-Rabb here refers to Allah- the Exalted, the Creator who solely possesses power over all things, and guard, cater, direct the affairs of all His creations individually.

Scholars’ definition of Rabbaniyyah:

  1. Ar-Rabbaniy is an Arabic word ascribed to another word- Ar-Rabb-which means “The Lord”, this is because a Rabbaniy-a godly person- is someone who is close to Allah, he also follows His system in life and to Him he shall return.

  2. Ar-Rabbaniy is an Arabic word ascribed to another word- Ar-Rabbaan. The Rabbaniy is a person who sees to the affairs of people and reforms them. He is described as the captain of a ship who defends it in the terrifying times of waves, rains and violent winds till he guides it to safety until it reaches the destination.

  3. Ar-Rabbaniyyah is derived from At-tarbiyah-training: A slave cannot be regarded a Rabbaniy-godly except he partakes in the process of nurturing himself and others. Fundamentally, the word Ar-Rabb means breeding ; bringing up ; care ; curatorship ; fostering ; guardianship ; nursing ; nurturing ; from one stage to the other till completion or perfection stage.

Hassan Al-basriy said: Ar-Rabbaniy is someone who nurtures people with little knowledge before he gains expanse of knowledge. Hence he plays a major role in the process of fosterage, reviving, and restoration. He nurtures people through knowledge and raises them from one level of their life affair to a better one, which provides them benefit in life and the hereafter.

  1. Ibn Mas’ud said: A Rabbaniy is someone with frequent relating with people. He that does not relate with other pious people cannot be regarded as one. A recluse cannot be a Rabbaniy- godly person, rather they are men of large gatherings.

The entire meanings above are all correct and assert that a Rabbaniy-godly person is someone who learns the laws and prohibitions of Allah, and practices it, calls to it, and engages in the process of reformation for gaining the potential benefits in the immediate life and hereafter. Thus it is clear from this definition that godliness transcends the realm of individuality to the sphere of engagement and active participation in people’s life religiously … learning and teaching for self and others.

The meaning of Ar-Rabbaaniyyah- Godliness- in Islam:

The word Ar-Rabbaaniyyah is ascribed to Rabb-God- because a Muslim recognizes and obeys Allah, he is thus a godly person. The godly people are the scholars of Islam who practice its dictates, and due to their disposition, are ascribed to God. When Ibn Abbas died, Muhammad bn Hanafiyah said: “Today the godly- person of this nation of Islam is dead.”

It is expedient to this end, that Islamic laws are not establishments of the incapacitated man who is as well easily giving to desires, rather, the laws emanate from the Lord of creation and command, Who perfect everything. Thus, the believer in Allah, as he strives to implement the divine system in himself, he does that wholeheartedly, passionately, sincerely and in full compliance. We therefore contend that such person is a Rabbaniy-godly person, provided he fears Allah, comply by His commands and maintains the set boundaries.

O you faithful, Allah says:

The instruction from this verse is to be complied with, ditto for every available commands in the Qur’an .. provided there is no seemingly contradiction. Thus we must all be godly.

Of the most detailed or refined meaning of Ar-Rabbaniy is he who has a good relation with Allah. People could be classified as being either godly or lustful. He that responds to Allah is godly while he that answers his instinct or urge is lustful. Allah also says:

O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.” (Q8: 24)

Ar-Rabbaniyyah-godliness is the life of the soul, an eternal felicity, including success and safety in life and hereafter. Undoubtedly, man is either godly or lustful, believer or disbeliever, goodly or evil, just or ungrateful, sincere or cunning, upright or corrupted. Being a two-way thing, you are either here or there by default … Allah says:

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. “ (28: 50)

This is the way the Qur’an have classified people, which is the reality, there is no third way to it.

The need for true fostering of faith:

The Muslim nation and humanity in general need the true nurturing in faith which could cleanse the heart of the love for the world and self, and advance them to Allah- the Exalted. Freeing them from servitude to materials, desires and deceptions to align them to servitude to Allah alone. Consequently their souls are purified of shirk and hypocrisy, falsehood, lustful looking, wantonly speeches, show-off, deceptions and contradictory character. Allah says:

And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it. And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness. He has succeeded who purifies it. And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. (91: 7- 10)

Tazkiyah- Soul purification-means to purify, to grow or to develop. It also means to do away with hypocrisy, lewdness. The growth or development referred to here also connotes to adorn faith and righteous deeds, described by scholars of this field, as abandonment and adornment.

Soul Purification- fundamental assignment of the messengers of God

Soul purification is a basic function of the apostles in addition to rehearsing verses of the scriptures, and its teachings, as described in four different places in the Qur’an, such as:

﴿لقد من الله علي المؤمنين إذ بعث فيهم رسولا من أنفسهم يتلوا عليهم آياته ويزكيهم ويعلمهم الكتاب والحكمة وإن كانوا من قبل لفي ضلال مبين(آل عمران 3\164)

Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.” (3:164)

The holy Prophet (pbuh) accomplished this function accordingly, whereby he produced the best generations of men in believe, devotion, character, generousity, intellectualism, earning, giving, enjoining good, forbidding evil, building good morals, discarding vices, repelling evil, and falsehood.

Peculiarities of Ar-Rabbaaniy- godly person.

  1. Monotheism: A godly person must be a monotheist- one who exclusively reserves for Allah alone, his worship, seeking help, etc. Allah says: (﴿

It is You we worship and You we ask for help.” (1:4)

It is submission and love, avoidance of shirk, shunning worshipping others beside Allah- including; human, jinns, animals, like cows, or stones or the devil, or protector, all these are forbidden. The worst of shirk is to worship the desire. Allah says: (أَفَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَهَهُ هَوَاهُ)

Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire. (45: 23)

The worst agent that destroys spirituality of a believer is shirk-associating partner with Allah, not secularism, secularism is only a confined sphere of the larger danger. The Prophet said: “The most fearful thing I fear for my Ummah is associating partner with Allah. I have not said they would worship the sun or moon, or idol, but deeds for other than Allah, and concealed desires.” (Ibn Majah)

The following verses elucidate monotheism concepts that none besides Allah should be taken as Lord, Judge, or seek the pleasure of such in any matter:

(﴿قُلْ أَغَيْرَ اللَّهِ أَبْغِي رَبّاً وَهُوَ رَبُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ﴾ [ سورة الأنعام: 164 ]) (Say, "Is it other than Allah I should desire as a lord while He is the Lord of all things?)6: 164

(﴿قُلْ أَغَيْرَ اللَّهِ أَتَّخِذُ وَلِيّاً فَاطِرِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ﴾ [ سورة الأنعام: 14 ] ) (Say, "Is it other than Allah I should take as a protector, Creator of the heavens and the earth,) 6:14

114 ] ) ( [Say], "Then is it other than Allah I should seek as judge ) 6: 114

But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.” (4:65)

Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (6: 102)

  1. Abiding by laid down religious rules, not creating innovations:

A believer in Allah lives a life guided by the revelations of Allah, not by whims and caprices of men. A believer should uphold the remembrance of Allah regularly and maintain sound relationship with Him. This relationship is guided by two major fundamentals: first, worshipping Allah alone, and secondly to worship Him by the approved rules and establishments.

Imam Fudhail was asked about those two attributes of good deed-sincere and right-, and he answered: “A sincere deed is that which is done to seek the pleasure of Allah, and the right deed is that done in compliance with the sunnah.”

Therefore, worship in Islam are not subjected to human thinking and desires rather, it is based on revelation- the qur’an or the sunnah or both. The Prophet said: “Whosoever introduces into this affair of ours (i.e. into Islam) something that does not belong to it, it is to be rejected." (Al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Also he said:So for you is to observe my Sunnah and theSunnah of the rightly-principled and rightly-guided successors, holding on to them with your molar teeth. Beware of newly-introduced matters, for every innovation (bid'ah) is an error." [Abu Dawud & Al-Tirmidhi, who says it is an authentic hadith]

  1. Persistence in worship:

A godly personality in Islam should be persistent in his worship. To him worship is not a flash of event of alternating happening and seasonal rather he is constant and persistent. Haven’t you see some Muslims who are Ramadanians- they worship only in Ramadan and when Ramadan elapse, they return to their old styles.

In Islam, of course, there are obligatory worship which are once in a lifetime requirement for instance- the hajj.

Also, there are worship on annual basis, e.g- fasting in Ramadan, and weekly devotion- e.g- the Jum’ah prayer, and the daily worship, such as the daily prayers. Other than then these is the constant worship of remembrance of Allah and supplicating to Him.

SECOND KHUTBAH

All praises are due to Allah Who created the heavens and the earth. May Allah bestow peace and blessings on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his families, his pious companions and all those who follow his guidance.

Dears believers in Allah, we urged people last week to partake in their civic right to acquire the Permanent Voters’ Card. The exercise in some states was conducted between Friday, 7- Sunday, 9 November, 2014, some left their work place in order to collect the card but could not get it. Some have now been postponed till 28- 30 November, 2014. This might be another political scheming at attempting the rigging of the coming general elections, therefore we enjoin everyone to resist and endure the challenge to troop out for the collection.
Dear faithful, Allah –swt- have again brought to reality a promise of His:

هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ (التوبة 33)

It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.” (9: 33)

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as Witness.” (48: 28)

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as Witness.” (61: 28)

In the collection of Imam Ahmad, Tameem Ad-Daari narrated that the Prophet said: This matter- Islam-will reach everywhere reached by the night and day, Allah will not spare a house except He brings Islam into it ; by honouring the honourable ones (who accept Islam) or humiliating the humiliated (who rejects it). Such glory by Allah will be for Islam, and the humiliation will be for kufr- disbelief.” (Albani said: Narrated by the group including Imam Ahmad Ibn hibban, al-hakim, and classed it as sound hadith.)

This promise had taken place within the fold of persons one could least expect it happen. A similar occurrence had happen in the time of the Prophet when Abdullah bn Salaam- a revered Jewish scholar- accepted Islam.

The news was spread on the internet that a catholic priest wakes up from coma after 17 months, and converts to Islam. The 87 year old man- priest Eduardo Vincenzo Maria Gomez- suffered a cardiac arrest while helping local volunteers to fix the roof of his own church and fell an incredible two stories height, which one could not have expected him to survive, but Allah saved him and brought him out of his coma, in brittle shape, after several months. Allah assisted him, gave light to his heart and guided him to true guidance and peace- Islam. His congregation majority also followed him in this religious exodus to Islam. This event is taken as glad tiding from Allah, at a period when Muslims and Islam are blackened, especially those who adhere to its teachings.

In addition to this is the story of a mosque in the U.S. which was locked by the antagonistic authority who claim the adhaan is nuisance to them in the neighbourhood. However, miraculously, adhaan is heard from this mosque every time of prayer. Held in surprise, the authority stationed their cameras to search for who the muadhin is.

Oh Allah descend peace; flowing with continuous tranquility and security upon Nigeria and all other Muslim nations. O Allah accept the worship of the pilgrims of hajj and Umrah, and grant us all Your pleasure, And the last of our call will be, "Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!"
