University College of Medical Sciences

ANNUAL REPORT

(April 2011 – March 2012)

Preamble

Established in 1971 as a constituent College of University of Delhi, University College of Medical Sciences has attained pre-eminent position as a seat of learning in medical sciences on the map of India as evident from various country-wide surveys of medical colleges by independent agencies. During the year 2011-12, the College made rapid strides in all spheres of medical education, research, patient care and various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The College launched new teaching program, 3 years Masters Degree Course in Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry. Besides this, the College witnessed steep rise in enrolment for various Postgraduate Teaching Programs as well as PhD Courses. Despite increase in training capacity in various programs, the College has been able to achieve excellent results in various university examinations.

During the year, several faculty members have received prestigious awards in their specialties and some teachers were conferred off-shore fellowships. The faculty members and students published record number of scientific papers in various reputed Journals and presented their research work at various national and international conferences. The College also witnessed marked increase in the number of research projects funded by various external agencies. Few departments have hosted national conferences. Besides this, a significant progress in augmenting the e-resources in the library and office automation was made.

The Medical Education Unit organized several workshops aimed at improving the teaching - learning skills at undergraduate, postgraduate and senior resident level as well as for faculty development. Besides the regular extra-curricular activities such as cultural feast and sports extravaganza, the College launched Medical Humanities Wing of Medical Education Unit which organized lectures by various luminaries in non-medical fields, photography exhibition, street plays and a presentation in performing arts in collaboration with SPICMACAY. The College also launched its newsletter, ‘Cosmos’ to highlight various activities.



        1. Highlights of major activities and achievements during the period

Medicine

The Department organized three major international conferences during the year which were well attended and appreciated by both national and international delegates.





  • International Symposium on Euthansive and End of Life Care Issues

  • Indo – US conference on Emergency Medicine (In collaboration with AIIMS)

  • 2nd International conference on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine (In collaboration with AIIMS)

The Department was one of the first in Delhi for establishment of new centre of excellence for Diabetes, endocrinology and Metabolic diseases, whose foundation stone was laid in February 2012.

Microbiology

The department organized the Winter Meet of IAMM – Delhi Chapter on “Accreditation – Strive for excellence” in collaboration with NABL on 3rd Dec.2011. Two workshops were conducted in the Department on “Biofilm formation “and “PCR as a diagnostic tool in Fungal Sinusitis” under the aegis of IAMM Delhi Chapter.

Forensic Medicine

Dr. N K Aggarwal was nominated as an expert for National Human Right Commission, New Delhi, India. The department has organised Training of Trainee Officers of Delhi Judicial Services & Training of Medical Officers of Delhi Jal Board.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology

During this year department was office bearer of Association of Obstetrician & Gynaecologists of Delhi and under AOGD many awareness programme, workshops and conference organized successfully. The department has also received many distinctions at national level and 11th time R.D. Pandit Award for best thesis in India we got; State award for faculty member and Residents fetched gold medals in various conferences.

Otorhinolaryngology

The department has been successfully organizing international courses.



Radiology

The department added a state-of-art 64 slice CT scanner & is in the process of installing a high end digital radiography machine.



SURGERY

Our new 500 bedded ward block for Maternal and Child Care Facilities has been commissioned in addition – the new building for School of Nursing was also commissioned.

UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL

  • Mr. Abhishek Goel and Mr. Swapnil Patel of 9th Semester won the College round of UG IAP quiz competition.



ANAESTHESIOLOGY

  • Dr Kavitha Lakshman: Kop’s award for best paper presentation in speciality of pain at 59th National Conference of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists; 26th – 29th December 2012; Mumbai. Entitled “A randomized study for evaluating the efficacy of integrated multimodal approach using 5% lidocaine patch, pulsed radiofrequency lesioning of intercostal nerve and pregabalin in postherpetic neuralgia”.

  • Dr Vanya Chugh: Best free paper presentation at 59th National Conference of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists; 26th – 29th December 2012; Mumbai. Entitled “Research presentations in Anaesthesia: Culmination into publications?”

Biochemistry

  • Dr. Bhanu Priya received Dr. R. D. Pandit Award-2011 for best MD Thesis in the area of Obst. & Gynae, Dec, 2011.

  • Dr. Kavitha Lakshman received KOPS award for best paper at 59th Annual National Conference of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists Dec 23-29, 2011.

  • Dr. Nalini Kaushik received a certificate of appreciation from the Organizers for attending 9th World Conference on Insulin Resistance on Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease held in Los Angeles, USA from 3-5 Nov, 2011.

  • Dr. Nalini Kaushik received ICMR International Travel Award to attend 9th World Conference on Insulin Resistance on Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease held in Los Angeles, USA from 3-5 Nov, 2011.

  • Dr. Nalini Kaushik received a consolation prize (oral presentation category) at Association of Clinical Biochemists of India (Delhi chapter) meeting “Opening New Horizons in Clinical Biochemistry” at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.

Microbiology

  • Dr. Tripta Kaur, Sr. Demonstrator, won the 3rd best paper award during the Winter Meet of IAMM Delhi Chapter held on 3rd Dec.2011 for her work entitled “Study of CAR expression in Myocardial tissues of Dilated Cardiomyopathies”. Dr. Prakash (2nd Yr.PG) & Dr. Vivek (1st Yr. PG) won the 1st & 3rd prize respectively in the medical quiz at the above chapter meet. Dr. Mayuri Rani & Dr. Megha Brijwal (3rd Yr. PGs) won the 2nd prize in the medical quiz at the Annual Conference of IAMM- Delhi Chapter on 25th Feb.2012 at AIIMS

SURGERY

  • A team consisting of Gaurav Kaushal and Pradeep Sharma, 3rd year postgraduate students stood second in Grand Postgraduate Surgery Quiz, held on 25-11-2011 at Santosh Medical College, Ghaziabad.

  • Gaurav Kaushal, 3rd year postgraduate student stood first and won Rs 5000 cash prize in Onco-quiz held during a CME “A practical approach to the management of breast cancer - an update for post graduates and surgeons”, organized by Max Cancer Centre, New Delhi on Sunday, 20th November, 2011.

  • Siddharth Kalra, 3rd year postgraduate student stood third and won Rs 2000 cash prize in Onco-quiz held during a CME “A practical approach to the management of breast cancer - an update for post graduates and surgeons”, organized by Max Cancer Centre, New Delhi on Sunday, 20th November, 2011.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Like every year the college students organized a cultural festival, named “Ripple 2011” including sports festival Arena during March and a mid session festival ‘Avalanche 2011’ during September. During this time students show their hidden talents and actively participated in the literary events like Debates, Quiz etc. Cultural events like fashion show, choreography, Western dance and drama and sports. Our students also go to other institutions and participate in their cultural and sports festivals.

The photography unit of UCMS (PHOCUS) organized inter-college photo competition for students during Avalanch and Ripple. The literary society APOKACY organized 3 days a purely recilations during the annual academic year.

The College choreography team under the coordinatorship of Viraj Panda won the 1st Prize during Pulse, AIIMS for their performance entitled “Panorma-Colours of Life”. During the same festival the college dramatics team “Manchayan” under the coordinatorship of Saurabh Avi won the Ist prize for the street play “Corruption”.
