A Hydrological Model For Büyükçekmece Lake
Nowadays, there is an increase in water demand with the population increase and therefore, it is important to protect and develop existing water resources. For this reason, many hydrological models have been developed in order to efficiently use water resources such as streams , lakes , wetlands and ground water. In this study, the longterm water budget of Büyükçekmece Lake, which is one of the most important water resources of Turkey, is analyzed using hydrological data. The annual water level changes are investigated with the hydrological model. Rainfall, evapotranspiration and streams feeding the lake are taken into account in lake water budget. A hydrological model for Büyükçekmece Watershed is developed by using EPA SWMM in order to calculate the total runoff developed over the catchment that reaches the lake. The annual surface runoff hydrograph is obtained by continuous simulation of the hydrological model developed by EPA SWMM. Then, the output of EPA SWMM, i.e. surface runoff, is used as input of the hydrological model of Büyükçekmece Lake. With the numerical model, the long term hydrological behavior of the lake is understood and the annual water levels during 2000-2009, of which no data exists, are obtained.
