Improvement Of Adobe Materıal By Usıng Glassfıber And Aır-Entraınıng
This work investigates adobe which has been in use as a construction material for many centuries. The purpose of this study is to improve the properties of adobe. The study consists of two parts. The first part deals with production of improved adobe. The second part investigates the cost advantage of using adobe bricks.
In the first part, glass fiber and air-entraining additives were added to the adobe mortar. The samples were produced with various mix proportions to observe and analyze the effect of the additives. The specimens were tested on the 28th and 56th day for compressive strength and water resistance properties. The results were illustrated with appropriate graphics.
In the second part, financial advantage gained by the use of adobe is analyzed. Cost comparison of the adobe wall and the brick wall which is widely used are made. The best performing composition was found to be adobe containing 0.05% glass fiber by weight of soil and 100% air-entraining additive by weight of water. The cost comparison was made using this best performing composition. Based on this comparison, the economic benefit of adobe to economy was illustrated.
Earlier research work carried out by others were reviewed and analyzed in relation to this study. The outcome of the present makes a positive contribution to the development of environment friendly and cost efficient building material. A general evaluation for the study can be found in the last chapter.
