Investigation of the effect of hydrolysis products of waste PET on the properties of alkyd resins
In this study, hydrolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) wastes obtained from grinding of post-consumer water bottles sieved to obtain a 4-8 mesh fraction were carried out in different condition. Hydrolysis of waste PET with different amounts of water (PET/H2O molar ratio 1/5; 1/10; 1/20) was carried out in the presence of zinc acetate as catalyst at 200 and 230 ◦C. After the depolymerization reaction, product was extracted three times with one liter of boiling water and water insoluble fraction was obtained. Then, the filtrate was cooled (4oC) and water soluble fraction was obtained. Hydrolysis intermediate products were characterized by acid value, hydroxyl value, , Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and the thermal properties of these products were analyzed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Hydrolysis intermediate products obtained in this thesis were used in the synthesis of long oil alkyd resins. Five alkyd resins were prepared from phthalic anhydride (reference alkyd resin) or depolymerization product of the waste PET (PET-based alkyd resin), penteritytrithol, soybean oil fatty acid and glycol (reference alkyd resin) or depolymerization product of the waste PET (PET-based alkyd resin). The physical and chemical properties such as drying degree, hardness, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, adhesion, water resistance, alkaline resistance, acid resistance, salt water resistance, solvent resistance, thermal oxidative degradation resistance (with thermogravimetric analysis, TGA) and the resistance to environmental conditions of these alkyd resins were investigated. Physical and chemical film properties of the waste PET-based resins were found to be compatible with the properties of the reference resins. Furthermore, drying degree, hardness and alkaline resistance of the PET-based alkyd resins are better than these properties of the reference alkyd resin.
