Preparation of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) Filled Polyethylene Films and Investigation of their Permeability Properties

In this study, LDPE composites with different calcium carbonate types and compositions are prepared by using a twin-screw extruder, and films of these composites are obtained by using a cast film line which is connected to a single-screw extruder.

To investigate the effect of filler size and structure on properties of composites, calcium carbonate (Turkcarb® FilmPlus, Turkcarb® 2KC, Turkcarb® 1C, Turkcarb® 1 and Schaefer Precarb® 400) with different crystal shapes, mean particle size and surface modification ratio have been used.

Surface modification properties of powdered commercial calcium carbonate samples were determined qualitatively and semi-quantitavely by using Fourier-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Rheological and physical properties of composites, prepared using a twin-screw extruder, were investigated by oscillating rotational rheometere (AR-G2) and Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). Creep behavior of highly filled films which were obtained from a cast film line (connected to a single-screw extruder) were pointed out with Dynamic mechanical Analysis (DMA) and gas (O2) permeabilty test were done.

Effect of calcium carbonate on rheological behavior was investigated particularly in lineer viscoelastic region. Increase in modulus of composites, caused by surface modification process, is observed clearly. Materials with high filler content exhibit deviation from lineer viscoelastic behavior even in very low strain values. Increase in dynamic viscosity and storage modulus with increasing calcium carbonate ratio was seen.

Compatibility or incompatibilty of composites were discussed by comparing the results obtained from melt rheometer and gas permeability tests.
