Preperation and Characterization of Ceramic Based Anode Materials for Direct Methan Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
In recent years, with the growing concerns regarding increasing greenhouse gas emission and diminishing fuel reserves, research on fuel cell technologies has risen to high prominence both for the academic and industrial communities. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that directly convert chemical energy into electrical energy, which offer higher efficiencies than conventional power production based on combustion processes. They have a wide range of potential applications ranging from providing power for portable devices (mobile phones) and transport applications, to both small and large scale stationary power applications. Fuel cells do not produce significant quantities of NOx, SOx or particulate pollutants.
Solid oxide fuel cells offer the greatest prospects for commercialization, with a number of companies in this area developing systems for the market. Solid oxide fuel cells are all solid state systems consisting of three main components, an electrolyte, a cathode and an anode. They operate at elevated temperature 600-1000 0C to ensure adequate ionic conduction in the electrolyte. This high operating temperature allows internal reforming and promotes rapid electro catalysis with non-precious metals. The SOFC offers certain advantages over lower temperature fuel cells, notably its ability to utilize CO as a fuel rather than being poisoned and the availability of high-grade exhaust heat for combined heat and power or combined cycle gas turbine applications.
The aim of this work is to prepare oxide based anode materials for solid oxide fuel cells with catalytic activity and mixed ionic-electronic conductivity and then characterize them with SEM, XRD, EIS and I-V curves.
