---Kiroku Bunka no sho toshite no Kicho na---
Precious Record of Cultural Evidence
How many hardships must a person endure in his search for the truth? The founder of Uechi Ryu, Uechi Kanei Sensei endured the hardships for over half a century to see prosperity for his work and guidance in Uechi Ryu. Uech! Kanei hoped to leave something everlasting for future generations to come involved in Uechi Ryu. From him there is deep sincerity and meaning to his words.
From the standpoint of history in Karate Do there is intended a special thanks for the constant respect not just outside us but inside us also.
Originally the succession of culture and abstract culture was to have been directly limited to master and pupil or father and son. This succession between master and pupil was transferred with reverence regarding “Te Jutsu".
Originally the legitimacy of abstract culture in the rural districts was not recorded, only verbal evidence exists.
Today “Present" and "Today Past" we should take the time to understand how the extents of Karate Do’s keen attributes are put to use.
During ancient times on Okinawa an outsider often failed to get in-depth secret information on Karate Do. This information only came from Master to Pupil, Father to son.
The inherited person to receive this information had to develop special individual characteristics and special art, skill and abilities. The extent to which it was conveyed was odd but again the benefit received from this special training had had its rewards.
The one important theory of Karate Do was to develop of the right conduct or attitudes. To know, develop, and appreciate these qualities created by the mission of Karate Do, one only has to read the Bunken (Old Literature) to understand its meaning.
To do this you gained the right meaning from the old literature on what these unique individual or individuals were teaching. The precious meaning of this publication came from an era that will have special significance for the modern Karate-Do student.
In the world today, I think that people should take a stand for carrying on the unchangeable theory of Karate Do and carrying on this knowledge into new fields. To standup and spread this great progress and expansion is greatly needed.
In the history of Karate Do and the history of Uechi Rvu Karate Do who’s to say what the decisions will be? We don't know, but from a fifty-year-old Karate Ka's view of the theory of the mind, body and spirit the polishing of the Shugyosha’s conduct this is often a bitter struggle.
So we must leave for others a path to follow. This is seen in the history of Karate-Do and must accept as a fate of ones upbringing or cultural behavior. There is cultural evidence and verbal tales, which will prove this fact.
I think this book at the present should be a guide for the person or person’s actions in Uechi Ryu Karate Do. This precious record should be a guide to the future and must not be lost.
The immortality of Uechi Ryu is but a guidepost. The desire however is to learn and if diligently applied nothing can stop a person from achieving his or her goals.
---The Distinct spirit of Peace A Handwritten Report on the Essay of Karate Do From the Assembly of the House of Counselors---
This article deals with the Problems of the Chairperson in the development of the foundation for the counter-plan for Northern Okinawa. He is also an adviser to the Uechi Ryu Karate Do Association.

In our own country Okinawa, Karate was handed down in the old way prescribed in documents dated 500 years ago. Was it time on Okinawa for the organization and development of a timetable for the creation and expansion of Bujutsu or (Te) during ancient times? In China “The way of the Fist" was to spread this new idea so its doctrines were never lost.
Today on Okinawa the word of Karate Do's uniqueness must be spread. From this action comes it prosperity. With that idea in mind we want to arrive at our goal of understanding the hundreds of years of history, or our learning will cease to exist. We must strive to overcome the language barrier and continue our study and pursuit Taijutsu or the body arts. We also must use our imagination, which is limitless to make this come about.
The results of these actions led to the developing of Karate-Do in modern day and into the ideology of the big three or mind, body, spirit union. These will one day become as one in this art. We must build our footing internationally, and then we will be able to witness the results firsthand. People in general must also be able to listen and to understand what the martial arts are all about and bathe in the international experience of Karate-Do as a world art form.
The knowledge of martial history seems to have been forgotten, and our ties with this ancient era of long ago have been like a test given to us to too unscramble. Only when we find the answer can we reach the zenith of understanding in today’s world as it was back then. Then we will no longer be oblivious to the writings and teachings of long ago.
In understanding and developing Okinawan Karate-Do there must be creativity and expansion of the art of Bujutsu. From this we will be able to see what the martial arts have become. No one knows about the glory of modern day art forms. This has to be accomplished through understanding and friendship only then can the true word of Karate-Do be seen or experienced.
The aim that is needed is the increase in the number of people following a dedicated path or way (DO) in the martial arts. This endeavor is needed in order to gain a proper prospective of the martial arts and gain the desired results. One has to develop this art as a permanent way of life. The conclusion is to gain a needed affect toward the attitude of Bujutsu in order to have an understanding into the “Way”. Following the Great War WW II were often no surviving relatives to pass on the ideas and principles of Karate-Do and Bujutsu. To understand this problem martial arts history past and present must be read and understood.
To protect, promote and understand the idea of Bujutsu is in understanding its essence or spirit. From this statement we must ask of the reader to increase or build on his or her usefulness or understanding of the spirit of Bujutsu and grow from the brightness and manifestation the spirit of peace. This question of understanding the spirit of peace is also intended for the Military Arts as well. The truth or reality of peace comes from people’s postures or positions they adopt. In following this idea one should know and follow the ideas or principles of the path of Karate Do.
To be able to understand these ideas and become a Uke or receiver one must develop special universal martial arts characteristics. In order to achieve this one must study thoroughly the art of Ok1nawan Karate Do, Japanese
Karate-Do in general. The idea or theory of the triad of the Mind, Body and Spirit must be totally understood.
To reach this personnel objective many of us must arrive ahead of our goal, which entails hard work and study in order to accumulate the knowledge of the Way of Martial Arts.
Up until now Karate Do’s ideas have been split.
There must be a deep understanding of its tenets from within and without.
There is a barrier in understanding terms such as “Rentatsu” which defined as the skill of dexterity. Mans popular use of this term was very rarely written about or used. This is a fact.
The people on Okinawa acknowledge the foundation of the good fortune Of Karate Do on Okinawa. Some of the barriers 10 writing this publication was in counting or cataloging t he people involved. Also in writing this publication there must a consideration for Uechi Kanei-Sama or his personnel ideas and comments.
The foundation of the good fortune of Okinawan Karate-Do is owed to its dedicated practioners. Some of the barriers writing and publishing of this book was in counting and cataloging the people involved in this art. Also, in writing this publication one must take into consideration Uechi Kanei and his personal ideas or comments.
In the title of this book on Okinawan Karate Do several important subjects should be considered pre-requisite, 1. The essence of the spirit, 2. The techniques and 3. The history. For the ease in reading this book it is written in 3 basic parts. The details of these books are extremely important. Over ten years of argument and discussion were done to make these afore mentioned ideas clear.
In Uechl Ryu Karate-Do there was recorded (2) ideas, methodologies or perspectives gained from Uechi Kanbun. There was the idea of love and respect and the idea of developing the mind. There is a gap of 50 years between the two worlds of Uechi Kanbun and Uechi Kanei. But the basic ideas and tenets were held onto. Many years were put into the drafting of this book.
The idea of polishing your style should always be emphasized. In written portions of this book on Uechi Ryu Karate Do's History and reorganization, guideposts were taken from picture periods and inauspicious deeds.
To read or recite the writings of Okinawan Karate Do would have to have a deep understanding of the spirit of Bujutsu and the people.
Another important concept is the universal uniqueness on the abstract ideas of the father and son Master and pupil relationship. This must be understood. The very nature or profound universality in this idea must be understood from a western concept. There must be an understanding in the interpellation of the ideograph Karate Do.
In the world the term Japanese term “Shin” which means mind, spirit, or heart must be understood. One should not misinterpret or the above-mentioned definition, but think Shin as being the one. There must be doubt or misunderstanding of this concept.
In ancient times thee were models to study from or with. There were outside ideas which did benefit the tenets of Karate Do. To keep oneself within the barriers of the correct tenets one must read and learn from the old literature and be proud of its accomplishments. One stipulation of Karate Do is in the Structure of the spirit of technique. This understanding is a must. Karate ni Sente or the first move in Karate is an important term. The next question is is there a deed or service rendered by the use of Sente?
The idea of Karate Do on Okinawa is in the dissemination of the idea or symbol of Heiwa or peace. There must be harmony within the spirit. The Japanese idea of peace is a rare request. To understand this idea one must build a natural foundation for a good conscience.
From: Uechi Ryu Karate Do's
Founder Uechi Kanbun; the Martial
Spirit demands of one to live a
transitory life. This is a life of
proud loneliness and in order to
maintain this concept requires a man
who can change the world. The term
Seishin is a personnel one. The idea
that life is circular in nature is a
definite known. To control 2 Paths or
destinies were Uechi Kanei’s idea.
---
This idea comes from the (1.Kobushi-Sei or Fist saint). This idea or two-sided concept comes from Shingi or spirit art wherein the nature or strangeness of entering into (Mui) or inactivity in a spirit art is strange. To carry it to an extreme the expressions man use in entering this concept is termed as Sho or victory.
Note 1 The Kanji for the fist way can be termed either Kenpo or Kobushi.
To say that the spirit or mind art has two sides is basically correct. The written ideas, which accompany this book, have immense value. To overcome the barriers in the writing path or Kaku Do is to become one with the way. The idea of written techniques is to exceed beyond mere content but evolve into tradition as being one. To live as man did long ago one can delve deeper into the depths of the mind through enhanced spirituality?
In writing about the history of Karate Do is akin to questioning ones active martial roots. This idea must be thought about. The final idea of Karate Do's mind/spirit ideology is difficult to write about but is tied to the ideology of speech. The writings of Uechi Kanei's toils and labors are deeply respected by all.
The idea of the triad of the mind, body and spirit of Okinawa Karate-Do and Japanese Karate-Do in the future should be in following path of prosperity and steadiness. In the art of Uechi Ryu Karate Do, one must separate the chaff from the wheat and proliferate the commemoration of this publication and celebrate the way throughout the world. Digest this article thoroughly.
The father Uechi Kanbun and his son Kanei are people of in between temperament. This is a virtuous essay of their ideas of `Martial Spirit.
---A report from the Department of the Prefectural Office
of the Honorable Mayor; Kenji Saiichi---
Mr. Uechi Kanei and I have had long periods of separation between us, both spiritually and physically. But during our childhood we were close friends, always together. During the first 3 to 5 years after our birth we grew and did everything together. We were always loyal to each other even in sharing things. During primary school we were about the same size bodily and even facially. Those present would not be able to tell us apart. We even shared the same desk. Then a seating plan in school separated us.
During these early years Uechi Kanei revered his father Uechi Kanbun and his ideals. Our native Itomi village was the starting point of the Uechi Bushi.
During the some 30 years of the Meiji Restoration Mr. Uechi Kanbun spent 10 of those years in China to study a Chinese art called Kobushi-Ho or the way of the Fist. After which he returned to Okinawa to be honored by his fellow villagers and was held in high esteem for his endeavors. It was many years after his return did he actually turn to teaching again.
After his return to Okinawa as a young man and an accomplished Martial Artist, he went to a festival to watch some local dancers on a stage. He could not help but noticing a nearby Karate demonstration. After observing this Uechi Kanbun started having second thoughts about teaching. Him though being so closed mouth thought better if his idea kept silent and continued to be the gentle soft natured person he had been cultivated into.
He thought often of his future life. How would he ply this knowledge of Kobushi? He was able to observe other people in the Martial Arts and would build his character around those people. But one reason he kept silent was that he thought he was of plain speech and stock and was always easy to make friends with. After Uechi Kanbun moved to Wakayama his son Uechi Kanei was able to learn and concentrate more from his father in the ways of Kobushi-Ho and the Way of the Bushi. During Kanei’s long years of arduous study and training he learned much. He was blessed with a natural talent as his father was.
To learn of the mind/body relationships was to build his attitude to new heights. He learned of justice and to build a proper character or frame of mind. Uechi Kanei inherited much from his father.
From Uechi Kanbun’s idea of father and son relationship Kanei learned the meaning of the ceremonial Kata, which was to enable one to develop the self both
physically and mentally.
Uechi Kanei and I always did things one at a time, but during his mother’s era the martial instruction he received was performed in series of three's. Instruction into being a Bushi was also in three's. There were strict instructions to the procedures of the three's.
At the present Uechi Kanei still learns from his father’s teachings. The idea that a martial person who develops his body parts in becoming a Bujin is to be feared. Back when Kanei was small he was prone to being sick. As years went on this sickness went away. This I believe was due to his pursuit of knowledge into the martial arts. This incentive was not to deter him from his goal. So to go so far as Kanei did in his lessons there came to him a separate reality to the martial arts.
So up until that time of realization there were many times for companions to become idle. In elementary school and always waiting for it to finish each of us had the will to be different. We longed for it. I went to Kyoto. Uechi Kanei went to Wakayama. Each going his own way adopted a natural place in life and each finding new friends in the end.
Even in the era of our childhood there was a friendly spirit between each of us. We had a give and take relationship, to be able to go to each other and ask things and in our leisure time we would pay calls on each other just to get together and talk about old times.
In another matter I would go as tar to say that with our childhood qualities I think that we were keen enough or tuned to each other in a way that even with private disasters which may have befell us we would be able to get help from each other any time any place.
Now Kanei is respected and revered as much as Uechi Kanbun was as original founder of the Uechi Ryu Karate do organization and was his equal. Even inside or outside the prefecture there is an excess of 50 years of ancient history and new and various viewpoints and books planned and projected on the art of Okinawan Karate do which was written as outlines in this preface.
As for the idea of the triad in Okinawan and Japanese Karate it is the Sensei's responsibility to spread the word to the international community of the ideals of Karate and its development. It’s also important to realize that the big 3 or triad as it goes from place to place to promote a happy life and or a person’s career. This is also a feeling of Kanei san and me.
To control this idea of "DO" or the way in this generation to build proper ideas and tenets in a country I say extend these ideas to interested parties in other countries i.e., the United States and center it all from Okinawa. One should be very proud of the statement from the west in regards to Karate do and its propagation. In the international arena it is extremely notable that Karate do's existence and fame has enabled one to bathe in its existence.
From the little village of Itomi on Okinawa we should be proud of the Japanese effort. Uechi Kanbun and Uechi Kanei and all human beings depend on what we write in this book. Also to think of a path or way that you intend to follow as an outsider you must go beyond your limits and you will benefit a great deal from this book and future writings.
You must also consider not future but past accomplishments as in ancient history and literature to be able to respect and understand the Martial Arts. You have to have no doubts as to your path once you have understood. This picture period is an account of Karma and to observe and perfect, is to accomplish what myself and my childhood friend Uechi Kanei have done, so clap your hands thrice and send praise to all.
In the straightforward lifestyle of Karate Do the one person who is devoted to the seeking of the truth and was reincarnated is Uechi Kanei San.
An article by the All Okinawan Karate Do League Promotion/Examination Chairman and All Okinawan Karate-Do Kaicho: Hachimoku Meitoku
For everyone in the whole world to become fond of Karate, this idea of victory or defeat is akin to having one foot in the grave. This is speaking metaphorically. The old traditions from ancient times must continue.
To say that in the course mankind takes that there is a big victory or a big defeat means that you are already defeated. With this idea cultivated is very unhealthy indeed.
So to do ones best at any endeavor is to make the world a better place for everyone. Also to not cause or create trouble for other people who live in the same society makes for a brighter and better world. Also in whatever line of work you’re in you should strive to do your best to make the world a better place to live in. You should also make efforts to assist other people in trouble in society or the area you live in. Exemplify Tenacity and perseverance at all times.
Well know in my opinion Karate is an idea of developing the mind. To talk about and propagate the ideas of Karate Do is the way Uechi Kanei strives for. Approximately, 56 years ago Mr. Uechi Kanei developed ideas, which is now bearing the fruit of his labors. That is why this textbook was published, in that in the contents there is a wealth of knowledge and facts that will dispel any misconceptions about Uechi Ryu Karate Do. Now to be able to take this information and print it for all to see was a delight for everyone.
Is Uechi Kanei San Karate? Or is Karate Uechi Kanei San? To learn Karate properly one should go to Okinawa. Uechi Kanei will see and hear of ones endeavors in Karate by way of your teacher’s acknowledgements upon the reading of this book. Uechi Kanei San's gentle qualities are what people will observe and read about in the country or world through their studies and what’s contained in this book.
Now onto the idea of Karate no Goju (The Hardness & Softness of Karate). To know and understand this idea is to pierce the heart of the lineage.
To devote a lifetime to the Art of Karate Do is a way of life for the Bugei on Okinawa.
The "Do" (Or the Way or Path) of this lineage exemplifies the diligence on Uechi Kanei's part in the Art of Karate and he who has worked like a demon to achieve his goals. This would make him a Gonge (A Buddhist Incarnation) I think. An incarnation of precious truth would be a better statement I think.
Under the strong general there must not be cowardly soldiers. Uechi Kanei's naming of his branch Dojo in this textbook exemplifies Honor, and Respect for the Art of Karate. There are few with the love and dedication to continue the research and study needed to understand this Art. For everyone to know what Karate is a different story. There is admiration though for the one voice that knows the actual state of affairs of Uechi Ryu.
At the time of this writing in this prefecture there are 18 branch offices and in world there are 14. This spread is substantial to a degree I think. To respect a colleague or Sempai (Senior Person) there must be a trust gained over the years. This earnestness and guidance that one receives in Karate Do is a way toward the truth. Uechi Kanei's teaching develops this idea into a reality.
Our founder in Karate is perpetual in years. Mans completion of study of his inherent culture is in the independence of the spirit body and mind. Freedom is like independence. This idea is akin to a search in the world for the tenets of Budo or Zen-Do. Freedom to search for the truth, this is perpetual also. For everyone to learn Karate in present times, the vogue way of sports Karate is the style.
In Karate the way of Jiyu Kumite I think is a way of applying the techniques learned in Karate. One must use full force to develop this learning process, but without the information presented in this textbook the way to the truth will be slow. One must without a doubt believe in what you read and practice. To teach these ideas there must be order and reason in this process also.
In the era of ancient times as is now days everything man does affects the whole of the heavens. Again to conclude that Karate's path is like a large tree, always far from everything solitary and lonely.
So to say that one must mirror the current trend of the times; this I think is what Uechi Kanei is trying to get across to the reader of this textbook. In Karate a young person will learn to cherish his or her doubts. To learn Karate the opportunity must be presented. Then again when the person finds the way his feelings or attitudes of life will change for the better.
Karate now and Karate on Okinawa and in Japanese is achieving recognition and making great strides. The present situation or state of affairs of this art is at a peak.
Now more clarification on the above statement that Karate now and Karate on Okinawa and in Japan proper and or worldwide are not the same, but the achievements or goals are. This is a current state of affairs opinion. Worldwide a Karate Do athlete’s first, second or third time exposure to the Kobushi-Ho or Fist Way will have new definitions.
In the present day world of Karate Do the oath or creed in the Olympic arena is to make everyone believe in the realization of the future and the possibilities it contains.
After the passage of Budo in ancient and modern times which in comparison to Sport Karate seems is insignificant, but the possibilities for each continue to blossom. A good analogy would be like after heavy rains the young bamboo shoots come up grow anew, so in kind so will the Art of Karate. This a happy event to witness and it will not cease.
I believe that this textbook on Uechi Ryu Karate Do is a mutual success to the Kobushi Way. There is express approval of this brilliant achievement in this day and era and there are some against, but one must acknowledge the compliments toward Uechi Kanei and to the executive leaders everywhere and to wish good health and show mercy to all and to this type of cultural art form.
Also, other associations and publications and their members must also be congratulated for their invaluable assistance.
These people who dedicated this material have patterned their life with Karate. So from this we pray that others will send or forward these words to other people in different tongues. Those who have read this book and have been taught Karate will continue to admire this announcement and hope it will be translated into many languages. Who’s to say what we can learn from reading this book. But you have to continue to admire the one message in this textbook: One must look at the philosophic view of life and death and into the idea of MUSO (No thought no Idea) or MUSHIN.
First the mind must be empty of thought order for the boy to defend itself with the first strike.
In order to climb up the back of the large tree of life you must first value the courage and respect of others. There is two sides to this statement one is the impossible the other is the possible. To see and understand this tenet there must be a steadfast belief in the martial arts and in the idea of mind vs. spirit.
The next article is by the first advisor to the all Okinawan Uechi Ryu, Karate do Kyokai, and Chairman of the Sumo Do Kyokai, and Chairman of the First Sightseeing Stock Corporation.

The source of Uechi Ryu Karate comes from about 4,000 Years of Chinese History. To be able to talk about this course of study by opening lines of communications into the ancient history aspect makes one feel like the father of his country. To explain these ideas there must be a firm conviction and the want for expansion and achievement of this Art for future generations.
Here is a theory of Okinawan Karate Do. The history of techniques in this book, were written with measurable truth 6 sincerity.
When Uechi Kanbun was in China in Fukien Province and in Japan his learning provided a half a century of training into this Martial Art. His knowledge was passed on to his son and senior students. To the great delight of others this knowledge will be here for all others interested in Uechi Ryu Karate Do.
It would be respectful if we said a silent prayer to dedicate this knowledge being passed on. This I believe would have been a request from Uechi Kanbun-Shi. This knowledge must be recorded and given to others dedicated to this Art. This is another reason that this book was published, to celebrate to the world the accomplishments of Uechi Ryu.
In speaking of teachers, upon first meeting either Uechi Kanbun or Uechi Kanei there is a gentleness of speech or manners. To accomplish this there must project an iron will. To be able to see the effects of Karate Do it takes a sharpness of eyes akin to that of the eagle. To look into and experienced a Martial Artists eyes such as Uechi Kanbun or Uechi Kanei you would see a fiery sparkle in theirs.
The teachers that Uechi Kanbun encountered in Fukien Province and in some of the Buddhist Temples transmitted a lot of knowledge of history and technique required in learning the Martial Arts. This to Uechi Kanbun was something to be proud of later on. To be able to speak or state his piece of mind to other apprentices under him was an invaluable tool.
About 4 years into the Showa Era there is a recollection from Wakayama of the teacher of the Palm Way {TE NO HIRA DO) and the students he took in. In Ancient China the way or destination of the disciples training had been built around the Dragon Hero of Bugei. The direction ordinary people took was to the way of a Bugei. This
idea seemed to be transmitted to everyone capable of understanding. Everyday in ancient times there were shows in the villages depicting the Martial Arts. Everyday more and more people were watching these demonstrations with burning curiosity. They seem to peak interest in the Martial Arts in general by being demonstrated.
People naturally sought out these martial artists out for their guidance, which seemed beneficial to everyone. With this approach to life they learned haste without waste. They learned from the various Martial Artists that to be like a large tree you stood with your backbone rigid and yet you had to have flexibility. The rise to this theory lifts the experienced to a suitable noble loft and leaves the teacher open to speak to the pupil and to see that he arrives to the right conclusions. To be able to speak to the Pupil and not tell him the answer outright but guide him to the right conclusions. To speak of this in depth is quite difficult it must be experienced.
The knowledge accumulated by the teachers over the years must be recognized by the student to enable him to arrive at logical decisions and understanding his objective. The student must also except and understand the strict regime and initiation period involved in learning this or any Martial Art.
Such opportunities to study and talk of Bugei in China were always not available. As I recall the teachers then always practiced maintaining the Mind/Body/Spirit triad; this seemed to be of paramount importance, but to actually train in Bugei and later on to speak about it to others was often difficult if not impossible.
For the teacher Uechi Kanbun the request he made to stay in Fukien Province for ten years to study as a youth, in a land where language and customs were often strange and where money was scarce even for a foreign national he survived the hardships which in today’s era this type of lifestyle would be thought of as next to impossible. Then this type of training was difficult and had to be inbred and or instinctive. Now days as I said before this type of training is almost extinct if non existent.
These troubled conquests one makes in excess of regular training creates a harder mind and body. To be able to endure this brings about ones innermost heart or feelings to play and the desire to learn more. When one arrives at a particular problem the experience of these already felt hardships would help train the individual for further advanced training and even possibly to the teaching level of Bugei.
Therefore, this style takes 10 years or more to learn properly. But in this era this idea of training is becoming non existent. I believe the reason why is that people nowadays will not or cannot undergo this type of rigorous training as was done long ago. To withstand these ancient ordeals was to polish and cultivate the Min4/Body/Spirit. To complete this type of training in the present day I think that a lot of these old ideas will not be learned to the degree that they where in ancient times.
The teacher’s sweat and blood was bound to the degree that his art skill was of unique quality. The benefit of the writing of this book is in describing this unique art form. To say that in China if an inexperienced person were to attempt opening a Dojo in Fukien Province his aim or goals' would more than likely not be achieved.
To speak further on the opening of a Dojo in China another reason an inexperienced Person would have trouble is that here would be heavy competition from already established schools and this person would have to face insurmountable challenges from other reputable Martial Artists, which were common back in ancient times.
If a person did get to open a Dojo during ancient times it was customary for the student to knock on the temple door and ask for permission to train that that Dojo and it was up to the teacher whether or not to let him enter.
In the era of the springtime of Uechi Kanbun's life, when he was full of vigor and enthusiasm and with a disregard for abandon he freely returned to Okinawa following the resolution of his dispute.
A short dissertation on this dispute follows:
Beneath the teacher there is the student who is progressing in his quest into Bugei. There was just a student Uechi Kanbun, who lived next door to his landlord. Evidently there was this quarrel or dispute over a boundary line or property line. Evidently this young person struck and knocked his landlord out. This event was not the first for this young man who was always getting in trouble. So one night according to the story this young person killed his landlord one night in a quarrel.
The victim’s assailant whether right or wrong, should not have used his skill learned from Uechi Kanbun for such a heinous deed. Were it not for this disgraceful murder but if it just a simple attack without homicide being involved it might have been covered up without incident and would have been forgotten. Things might have then been different for Uechi Kanbun.
But with Uechi Kanbun's tortured feelings this was too much for him to handle. His only next logical choice was to leave China. He then vowed after this incident not to teach his skill to another. He felt that his training and the teaching of students were all for naught.
Uechi Kanbun returned to his native village on Okinawa to live his life out he lived as a farmer in agriculture. A friend one day observed Uechi Kanbun practicing Kobushi (Fist Way) was able to discern what he was practicing. While working in agriculture for a number of years Kanbun met a man who tried to get him married, his friend talk constantly of women and benevolence of children but to no avail. Uechi Kanbun still practiced the Kobushi Way while working as a farmer* One day during a business engagement he related his experience to his friend of the happenings in Fukien Province and of his life as a teacher and experienced Martial Artist. He was almost persuaded to give up what he had learned but his friend suggested that he should hold on to this precious gift which should not be lost but given to other to learn. Now upon hearing of Kanbun's fame his friend who was a student from a Southern Kingai Sect of the Kobushi Way tried to convince Kanbun to take him as his student. Kanbun refused. His friend tried to convince Kanbun that he wanted to learn because he wanted to change his character and Polish his Mind/Body/Spirit/ attitudes again Kanbun refused even though he knew this man to be a previous student of Martial Art and of a sincere nature.
Even after Kanbun returned to Okinawa he was plagued with requests from people who wanted to come and live with him and learn the Kobushi Way. But being the person that he was he always declined. In present day Okinawa the highest seat of learning is at an Okinawan Prefectural Institute or normal school.
These schools have rigorous physical recreation curriculums and these schools stress the roots of the Okinawan heritage relating around Bunka and Martial Arts and in the meanings of the Martial Arts for example Karate Do as part of their curriculum.
A major part of the learning in the House of Uechi Kanbun after he got married was surrounded around Karate.
Another story surrounds itself around an acquaintance of Uechi Kanbun's a man by the name of Shishu Anko no Sensei. This man was noted as a great authority of the Way. Uechi Kanbun received quite a bit of guidance from this man in regards to Kobushi-Ho.
As the story goes every year the prefecture police headquarters for congratulations for promotions and such and had a huge party and they looked far and wide for people to exhibit various Martial Arts i.e., Kendo, Judo, Karate, and various other Military Martial Arts. This demonstration as things would have it was in Uechi Kanbun's home village and after several people hearing about Uechi Kanbun's fame as a re known Martial Artist in the Kobushi Way asked the police headquarters personnel to ask Uechi Kanbun to participate in this demonstration. He was forced or swayed more or less by his acquaintances, to go on stage and demonstrate his art. Finally fed up and wanting to leave he went upon stage and performed a very dynamic and flawless kata called Seisan after which he alighted down off the stage and went home.
After this dynamic demonstration everyone was awestruck and no one had anything to follow this act with which ended the demonstrations. Upon viewing this style everyone was amazed as to the simplicity of Kobushi Ho. After seeing this style many people were impressed and immediately wanted Uechi Kanbun to start a model school of this great style. Every morning a crowd would form to entreat Uechi Kanbun to change is mind. But with the experience of his last encounter from China still fresh in his mind he still refused to teach again.
Uechi Kanbun tired of people hounding him so he and his beloved wife and children moved to Mainland Japan to the City of Wakayama. In the closing years of the Taisho Era (1912 1925) to the early years of the Showa Era the world’s economy was in a panic.
So Uechi Kanbun went into service at a spinning mill make ends meet in Wakayama Shi. Uechi Kanbun ran into many problems with the dialect and customs. While working at this factory he met a man named Ryuyu Tomoyose. They quickly became good friends.
They lived in the same apartment complex, so they shared many private and personnel experiences.
As fate would have it Uechi Kanbun and Ryuyu Tomoyose spent many years together and Ryuyu Tomoyose being a vigorous person observed Uechi Kanbun practicing in private one day and became curious. Knowing that Uechi Kanbun would not teach anyone Ryuyu Tomoyose came to Uechi Kanbun and made up situations and that he was having problems defending himself.
So upon hearing of Ryuyu Tomoyose's plight he began to talk to him in private and educate him verbally on how to repel 1 these attacks and defend himself. After a while Uechi Kanbun began to teach Ryuyu Tomoyose in the ways of Kobushi Ho. Uechi Kanbun began to teach his student the proper postures of the first Kata Sanchin. After a while Uechi Kanbun began teaching Ryuyu Tomoyose on a regular basis. After which Ryuyu Tomoyose was able to live with his teacher and learn as a novice. After many years of training Ryuyu Tomoyose finally graduated. Then Ryuyu Tomoyose would gradually approach Uechi Kanbun and ask him to interview potential, students to train in Kobushi Ho.
It was shortly after selecting one of the other potential students that Ryuyu Tomoyose entreated Uechi Kanbun to open a private school. After much deliberation Uechi Kanbun did. They named the school The Panigainoon Karate Jutsu Institute. From that name evolved Panigainoon Ryu, and then from that name evolved Uechi Ryu Karate Do, which is the successor. So you can see the prosperity that this style has arisen to today.
The last ideas that Uechi Ryu Karate Do's society members wanted in training the new people was to understand that the purpose of this sty] was to build character and to contribute positively to society. They did not want the trainee to think of his ego in learning this style.
There must be expansion of this style and that is what part of this book is about so with all the time and trouble that went into writing and editing and publishing this book we want to thank all concerned and appreciate their help.
On this 12th day of the Showa Era
A very lucky day
