Purpose: This position provides coordination for pre-analytical operations of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Newborn Screening (NBS) Follow-up Program. The position is based in the NBS Follow-up Section within the Lifecourse Epidemiology and Genomics Division at MDHHS in Lansing and works closely with NBS follow-up, epidemiology, and laboratory personnel as well as external partners such as prenatal educators, hospital staff, midwives, and birth mothers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinates operations of the Newborn Screening Online (NBSO) system
Works closely with the NBSO technical administrator, serving as the back-up when needed
Develops NBSO informational materials for hospitals, midwives, and birth mothers
Develops or provides updates for NBSO website content as needed
Works closely with the developer of the NBSO system for maintenance and operations, including completing user testing
Works closely with the developer of the NBSO system when enhancements are needed, including completing user testing
Coordinates moving enhancement requests through the BIC process
Serves as the point person for reviews and updates of the NBSO system security
Coordinates with staff in accounting and/or the NBS financial specialist when needed
Follows up with hospitals, midwives, and birth mothers as needed
Monitors the inventory levels in NBSO
Oversees the ordering of inventory items to ensure inventory levels are always maintained
Develops quality assurance (QA) measures related to NBSO
Leads informational webinars as needed for NBSO customers
Writes articles for the NBS quarterly newsletter about NBSO as requested
Coordinates operations of the State-funded courier systems, STAT Courier and UPS, that pick up NBS specimens from birth hospitals and deliver to the State NBS Laboratory
Works closely with the NBS nurse consultant for all issues related to courier transport of NBS specimens
Collaborates with the NBS epidemiologist to produce summary data on functioning of courier system
Maintains a positive, strong, credible, professional and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant of MPHI projects, and represents the best interest of MPHI at all times
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s degree, with strong preference given to degrees related to informatics, operations, or systems engineering.
Experience: No specific type or amount is required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Required Skills and Characteristics: Must have ability to understand data, use databases and spreadsheets for maintaining records; ability to develop new contacts and maintain positive working relationships; ability to utilize knowledge to provide consultation and technical assistance; and ability to prepare articles and reports suitable for posting to program websites or distributing electronically. Excellent data management, organizational, and writing skills are essential. Must demonstrate proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications. Attention to detail and ability to multi-task are imperative for this position.
WorkEnvironment and PhysicalRequirements: Standard office environment. Involves significant computer-related activity including keyboarding and viewing a computer screen; occasional telephone communication. Job may occasionally require moderate physical effort such as lifting and transporting materials, laptop computer and projector, etc.
