Ammonia class

Ammonia class

  • The ammonia gas strongly irritates the respiratory tract

  • NB: after an initial potentially dramatic reaction, with acute suffocation, there is a possibility that the subject stops realising they are exposed, provided the quantities they are exposed to are small.

  • This leads to an important homeopathic sign: visible or objectifiable dyspnea, upon the ventilatory probes, without subjective suffering.

  • Extremely dry, during an initial phase that can last a long time and may remain dry.

  • Then, usually as a defense mechanism, can become productive and can generate secretions (accumulation of fluid on the lungs)

  • Is aggravated by warm rooms and cold and wet weather.

  • Oftentimes, the Ammonium types are the subject of respiratory obstruction and asthma diagnoses.

  • The ammonia irritation can lead to bronchial spasms consequently to the inflammation.

  • The usual modalities are by way of: wet weather, psychic problems, stress

  • One of the most reliable homeopathic symptoms.

  • A hissing sound of the voice is characteristic.

  • For Ammonium remedies, the voice can be the foremost important trademark.

  • One of the most reliable symptoms is the acute sensation of suffocation that can appear with or without objective signs.

  • In cases of bronchial asthma, frequent for Ammonium, the suffocation sensation can appear alongside a nasal obstruction.

  • More typical, however, is the sensation of suffocation “from the chest”, possibly accompanied by the following symptom.

  • Appears both in acute and chronic cases of Ammonium

  • The secretions can first be: watery, often irritant - and because of this - corroding the nostrils, supralabial space (Philtrum) and lips.

  • Sometimes, especially in children, the secretions are viscid and can make bubbles (see picture)

  • Blocked nose with acceding secretions and high respiratory obstructions, especially during the night.

  • Secretions that can be initially watery, then irritant (to the nostrils, lips, where ulcerations may appear too) (all-c, ars, kali) that are removed with difficulty and include bloody striation (bloody bronchial secretions).

  • Irritant secretions can also appear in other areas, with their respective discharges (i.e. digestive or sexual organs etc.).

  • Frequent Pharynx affectation, with large tonsils, prone to pus and bad breath (Barita); less so are fever and cervical ganglions.

  • Hoarseness, with burning or irritating sensation (caust, kali, hepar, phos, spongia).

  • Irritated mouth, with denuded areas by the mucous destruction, tongues with white, yellow or dark (toxic) deposits (kali, merc, acids).

  • Hissing sound that can appear either with fatigue or with respiratory conditions. Clinically, we may call an “Ammonium sound” the following symptomatic pack:

  1. Larynx irritation with hissing sound and hoarseness

  2. Fine bronchial rales

  3. Bronchial spasm (wheezing)

  4. Sometimes these symptoms are not troubling for the patient, who may complain about other affections (headaches, lumbar pains, hemorrhoids, digestive symptoms etc).

  • Very dry cough with difficult expectoration initially, then wet with irritating and often bloody secretions.

  • Aggravation of the respiratory signs during cold or wet weather (hydrogenoid remedies), paradoxically in warm rooms (dry coughs and nasal obstructions) and fatigue.

  • Chest pains during coughing or bronchial obstructions (often holding their chest) (Bry).

  • Toxicology: “Acute exposures to ammonia can cause immediate burning of the eyes, nose, throat and/or respiratory system and could even result in death. Itchy eyes, coughing and burning nose”

  • “Can irritate the eyes and cause burning, swelling, photophobia, sloughing of the surface cells of the eye and may cause blindness”

  • Often important to look for, whether as a recurrent pathology or a subjective sensation is the ocular tropism.

  • Burning, irritated eyes (eyes feeling tired).

  • Often, in typological cases, we find chronic granular blepharitis.

  • Predominant sensation of a dull headache (heavy head)

  • Sometimes, migraines (periodical one-sided headaches) can happen in Ammonium too

  • The same type of pain can also appear in other areas, especially in lumbar areas

  • Dizzy sensation, typical for the configuration of remedies belonging to this class.

  • Not as much vertigo, more so a mental state of confusion, lack of clarity, fogginess.

  • Which leads to an important homeopathic characteristic: slowness in action and thought.

  • In external skin applications, ammonia is caustic and burns tissues, causing irritations and chemical burns both light and severe:

Toxicology:

“Concentrated vapor or solution may cause the victim to experience pain, redness of the skin, and blisters. Signs displayed by the skin exposed to liquefied ammonia can include frostbite, tissue death, or severe burns with deep ulcerations.”

  • A typological characteristic, accentuated in carbonics and muriatics is the
