Technology-enhanced Learning - Activity Plan
Name: Kimberly Musgrove

Grade / Course: Grade 10 Science Lesson

Topic: Body Systems (skeletal/muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous)

Length of Activity: 60 minutes
Lesson Summary:

Students will understand how the different body systems (skeletal/muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous) work and how they are related to each other. Be able to create a plan to organize thoughts and write a descriptive and detailed paragraph for each system and create models.

Lesson Objective:

Students will:

  • Discuss the function of each system (skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous) in the body;

  • Consider how the systems work together.

  • Apply their knowledge by writing a description of each of the body systems.

  • Create a model of the different body systems (skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous) in groups.

Intended Curriculum Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify that systems are made of parts that interact with one another.

  • Students will be able to create models as representations of real things.

Instructional Activities

Teacher will begin the lesson by asking students what they know about the human body. Teacher will present the Youtube website and students will watch the body systems song. After watching the video students will review the major body systems (skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous) that were presented and discuss. (5 minutes)
Teacher will present the website KidsHealth.org, to the students. I will guide them through this website. They will see where to find short animated movies about each of the body systems that we will cover. (10 minutes)
Teacher will present the app Anatomy 4D to the students and will show them visually stunning and completely interactive Anatomy 4D images using augmented reality and other cutting edge technologies to create perfect and realistic images of the body systems. (5 minutes)
Students will watch a slideshow, which is a quick overview of the body systems on Study Jams Scholastic.com. Students after navigating around the site and completing the printed activities, one student per group will be traced onto large bulletin board paper. Each group will be assigned a certain body system. Students will refer back to the web site as necessary to create their design. Each group will create a 3D body system on the paper that will represent their specific body system. (20 minutes)
Teacher will launch the Kahoot Website and will allow students to complete the body systems quiz of 13 questions as a group. Students will complete the quiz and the group with the most points will be awarded bragging rights. (10 minutes)

Learner Assessment

  • Students will test themselves with a quiz of 7 questions, which is a quick overview of the body systems at http://bit.ly/1I3yzOO

  • Students will create models/ diagrams of the body systems (skeletal/muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous) that their group selected. We will followup with a discussion. Students within their group will create a 3D body system on the paper that will represent their specific body system. Presenting-Each group of students will name the major body parts in their 3D diagrams, and they will explain the major functions of each system.

  • Web Site Quizzes-After everyone has presented their body systems, students will go back to KidsHealth.org to take quizzes on each system. They may show me their score as they finish each quiz. Students also have the capability to print each quiz. (5 minutes)

  • Have students complete the Your Body worksheet. (5 minutes)

  • Collect the worksheet once they're done working. Review it to assess their understanding.
