LIRANS Services and Consultancy
LIRANS Services is an initiative to provide external businesses and others with facilitated access to the range of specialist equipment available at 250 Butterfield. Emphasis is placed on access to the confocal microscopes made available by capital funding from the East of England Development Agency. A web-site has been set up at www.beds.ac.uk/reserach/lirans/services. Delegates from businesses – and from universities – across the region were attracted to three training days made available in the 2010 (March, May and July). Co-ordinated by Dr Andres, the training sessions enjoyed time and support from a wide range of LIRANS staff/students. Marketing for workshops in 2010 was substantially driven by the Innovation Director (Dr Wesley Randle) but with his changing role it has been difficult to find an effective marketing approach. Nevertheless, improved arrangements have been put in place in order to facilitate and make transparent the link with the Knowledge Hub which carries out the non-technical aspects of the service (invoicing, etcetera).

Prof Tiantian Zhang

Director of LIRANS
Institute of Applied Social Research

  1. Introduction - IASR Research Profile and research activities

This year has seen a significant growth in the work of the Institute. The grant income, research outputs and partnership agreements with Non Government Organisations (NGOs), with local and central UK government bodies and with international organisations have increased substantially. We have made new staff appointments and are managing a range of new, innovative and different research projects. It has been a busy time!

The research carried out by the institute work is applied, and invariably developed in partnership with outside agencies, be they small NGO’s, leading children’s charities or government bodies. Our work engages with developing theory, policy and practice in the field. This year has seen important developments within social work training (with the Laming Report 2009 taking effect and the beginning implementation of recommendations from Munroe 2011). The Tilda Goldberg Centre is expanding and being recognised as a centre for Excellence in developing evidence based practice in social work. The impact of increasing social disadvantage and unrest resulting from the changing political and economic climate has had particular impact on asylum seeking children, children and young people at risk of sexual exploitation, of young people living in gang affected neighbourhoods and on children being trafficked into and within the UK. Our work continues to engage with these issues, advancing knowledge and understanding in theory, policy and practice. Comparative work that addresses these issues within the UK, Europe and the International setting is an increasing focus of our work.
