Bilingualism in Turkey and Turkish Language Education Turkey is a country with a multilingual and multicultural demographic form in which several languages are spoken. Majority of Turkish citizens speak both Turkish which is learned later and their native languages. Hence, they are bilingual or multilingual. The purpose in this study is to define the bilingualism in Turkey and to describe the bilinguals’ Turkish learning levels comparing the native speakers of Turkish. The question “When, where and how did you learn speaking Turkish?” has been asked to the individuals to describe bilingualism. Three different data collection tools, the free composition techniques, have been used to describe their Turkish learning situation. Datas are written every other week and collected from all groups simultaneously. The texts obtained have been analysed in terms of Turkish grammatical rules and the numbers of the sentences and words they contain. The research revealed that bilingualism emerged in Turkey before the age of school. Recently, the number of individuals who have learned Turkish as the first language and have only understood the local language is increasing. In addition, bilingual individuals express themselves in more words and phrases than monolingual individuals.
