4.9 Department of Ethnography.
Represents objects of everyday life, material and spiritual culture of the tribes and peoples of Africa, Asia, Australia, Oceania and America. In the halls of the museum you can see decorative fabrics, jewelry, weapons, ritual masks, and vases. America is represented by the best creations of the Mayans, Aztecs, Pueblos, etc.: Mask god Xipe Totec , Statue of the god Xochipilli , made of turquoise Masks of the god Tlaloc , Mask of the god Quetzalcoatl , Eagle from Vancouver Island (14th–19th centuries). The African section is interesting: Decorative mask , Figurine of a musician , Head of a queen (16th–17th centuries), ceremonial ax made of jade with the head of a fantastic creature (late 1st millennium BC), collection of textiles. The main funds of the Oceania collection were laid down during Captain Cook's voyage: wooden boxes for storing bird feathers from Cook's collection, cloaks and feather headdresses, two stone figures from Fr. Easter, etc.
In 2000, a case involving the British Museum occurred - the institution experienced serious financial difficulties, and many galleries were closed to the public. At the same time, there was no longer enough space for exhibitions. Collections for a while. Dedicated to Africa and Oceania moved to the north wing of Burlington House.
The museum acquired its current appearance mainly during the period of colonial conquests during the reign of Queen Victoria. Full of objects of art and cult of ancient peoples, it still holds the unsolved, sometimes mystical secrets of human history. The Museum celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2003.
