Competitive Cheerleading Tryout Information 2013-14
Please read and discuss this important information with your

parents/guardians prior to trying out!!!
Season runs from: End of October -March
Rules:

Practices, Games and Competitions are Mandatory

It is a very short, but time consuming program. Please do not tryout if you can’t commit to ALL practices and events.
The only excused absences are having a doctor’s note, or a funeral/wake. If you miss a practice, you will be benched from the next game. If you miss a game, you will be benched from competition. TWO unexcused absences will result in removal from the team.

Unexcused Absences Include-but are not limited to:

      • Driver’s Ed

      • Another sport/program or club

      • Missing school without a doctors note

      • Missing practice for doctor appointments (dentist, orthodontist etc.)

      • Vacation

      • Tumbling

      • Work

Tardiness is not acceptable! Leave early, be on time! You will be benched if you can’t be on time.
Practice Schedule:

Both teams will practice 3-4 days per week and have games two days per week.

We will practice Saturday mornings and occasional Sundays when the gym is not available on Saturday.

Practice will run from 3:30-5:30 during the school week. We will practice on mornings of days we do not have school
Both teams will practice during Thanksgiving Break, Christmas Break, and other days off in the morning, except for those days that fall on the Holiday.

Games: November through February for JV, November through March Varsity

Every Tuesday and Friday beginning the last week in November. This year, we have a few Monday and Thursday games as well. If we don’t have a game, we will practice. Please note: Both teams will practice before/during the other game.

Competitions:

Varsity will compete 7 times and JV 4 times. Dates will be given out upon making the team. You will attend all competitions at all levels, even if your team is not competing that day. Most competitions are on Saturdays, with the exception of 2 Sundays. All cheerleaders will be required to ride the bus to and from all events.

Other:

*Cheerleaders will be required to fundraise for competitive expenses.

*Cheerleader parents (2 adults per cheerleader) will be asked to assist in running our competition (December 22nd)

*Cheerleading will cost you approximately $200 for the season unless you are a returning member and have some of the uniform already.

*****We understand this is a large commitment, so please DO NOT TRYOUT IF YOU WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE DATES.

There will be two basketball cheerleading teams:

  • A competitive JV team consisting of 14 freshmen and sophomores with up to 3 alternates

  • A competitive Varsity team of 20 with up to 4 alternates (24 Maximum)

  • An alternate is a person who will do all jobs that the other members do, with the exception of actually competing. Alternates will fill in for injuries, sickness, and poor grades of other members. Alternates attend all competitions and are competition ready at these events. Becoming an alternate is NOT NECESSARILY PERMANENT. You will be told what you need to work on to become a competition member. If you would rather not make the team than be an alternate, DO NOT TRYOUT! Many people would love an opportunity to work with the Varsity squad, do not ruin someone else’s chances.

  • The Varsity Competition Squad:

A standing back handspring is required to tryout for this team.

TRYOUT INFORMATION

Clinic-Tuesday 29th, 5:30-7:00 You will have time to find a stunt group and practice with them for Wednesday. You may tryout as a base, backspot or a flyer. You will be shown jumps at the clinic and given time to work on your tumbling.

Wednesday Oct 30th 5pm until we are finished.- You must have a physical and a signed grade sheet to tryout.
What you will be scored on for tryouts:
1. 30-45 second tryout routine with music:

You will perform an individual routine using music of your choice or we will provide music for you. A 30 second routine is 7-8 full 8 counts (count to 8, 7 or 8 times in a row). Music can be brought on your Iphone, Ipod, or a CD. Please choose school appropriate music OR use our cheer mix.

Your Routine should include:

3 Jump minimum (one being a combo jump or combo jump/tumbling trick), standing tumbling, running tumbling, at least 2 full 8 counts of motion/dance. Feel free to be as creative as you would like and highlight your skills. For example: if you are really great at standing tumbling, you may want to incorporate a few standing passes. You may do the above requirements in any order. You may choose to have a routine with transitions from space to space OR you may just do all of your skills in any order you would like with music. We will be looking for facials and performance skills as well. You will be rewarded for the difficulty of your routine. For example: throwing tumbling at the end of the routine, incorporating extra jumps, etc. You will not receive difficulty points for poor execution. Only perform what you have perfected. You may do your motions/dance all at one time or you may choose to spread them out throughout your routine. YOUR STUNT WILL NOT BE IN THE ROUTINE. YOU WILL PERFORM THIS SEPARATE.

2. A stunt of your choice- You may not tryout as a front spot. See attached rubric for details
Rubric: Attached is the rubric for stunting and tumbling. This will show you how you can maximize your points on the score sheet. Please do not attempt a stunt that you have never tried before. **You may use a front spot but will be deducted a point from your score. You MAY NOT tryout as a front spot. Please show case yourself if you can do more than one position (ex: you can fly and you are a backspot).
**We will be using the official IHSA scoresheet to judge your routines with the exception of the 2 above rubric categories. This means all categories are worth 10 points. You will lose points on categories if you are not using the proper technique. We would rather see you perform a skill WELL than a harder skill with poor technique.
** Ways to improve your overall scores:

  • Precision and sharpness in motions and dance

  • Proper jump approach

  • Overall sharpness from transitioning to different parts of your routine

  • Proper technique of tumbling – straight legs in backhandspring, setting in tucks, layed out fulls and layouts.

  • A performance/WOW factor—entertain 

  • Pointed toes on jumps, landing with feet together, height

  • Flexibility and hitting sharp body positions if you are a flyer

  • Proper twisting technique if you are a flyer

  • Proper grip and catching if you are base/back

  • Difficulty
