David becomes an apprentice at the London firm of spenlow and yorkins and lives with a woman named Mrs. Krupp. Mr. Spenlow invites David home for the weekend. There he meets David Spenlow's daughter Dora and falls in love with her.
In London, David reunites with Tommy Traddles and Mr. Mikauber. Through Steerforth, David receives the news that Mr. Barkis is terminally ill. David goes to Yarmouth to visit Peggotty when he needs it. The wedding of little Emly and Ham begins after the death of Mr. Barkis. But David won't be disappointed that Emly is getting married soon. When Mr. Barkis dies, little Emly runs off with Steerforth, who she believes will make her a Lady. Mr. Peggotty is heartbroken, but he vows to find little Emly and bring her home.
Miss Betsy travels to London and informs David that her financial security has been compromised because Mr. Wickfield has joined a partnership with Uriah Heep. Growing interested in Dora, David vows to do everything possible to make their life as good as possible. But Mr. Spenlow forbids Dora to marry David. That night, Mr. Spenlow is killed in a car accident, and Dora moves into the house of her two aunts.
