The instances of the running animal are implemented as a function of a scalar time value. The motion of each individual leg is a function of time. The four legs are implemented by introducing a phase shift and different clock rates. See the postscript file for the implementation details. The multi-page TIF file contains 100 frames of an animated model. The following GIF files demonstrate animations of several models which are different by randomly changed parameters such as length of legs, phase shifts, etc:

3.Walking human
The walking human below is not implemented as a function of time. The components of a walking human are modelled as state machines. The instances of each component are characterised by the current angles and current angular speeds. See the postscript file for the implementation [eps]. The multi-page TIF file [tif 739KB] contains 300 frames of animation. The following GIF files show several animated models differing by randomly modified parameters. The humans randomly move from a walking state to a running state and back:
