Obituary Barrie Locke
BARRIE Ronald Locke was born in Sydney on December 27, 1935. His mother was a member of the Schooler family that had connections in the Tumbarumba and Lower Bago districts.
After completing his schooling in Sydney, Barrie joined the Bank of NSW. His first posting was to the thriving country town of Crookwell. While there he met Maxine Cramp but there was no romance.
Later when back in Sydney Barrie was walking in George Street. He saw a familiar face. Stopped to talk, it was Maxine. Like magic, romance and then marriage followed.
Barrie's banking career took him to many places including Newcastle Broken Hill and Adelaide. Then he began to dream of his Tumbarumba connections. The Schoolers, the Andersons, the Sinclairs. He dreamt of cattle farming and camping in the mountains.
Soon he and his brother John purchased "Wollongawah" a fine property on Paddy's River that had been part of the great "Maragle "station. They bought the best breeding Herefords and Barrie and Maxine and their young family of Kate, Caroline and Richard seemed set to become part of the rural establish-mint. But no, Barrie was inspired. He saw the moonlight on McPhersons Plains and began to dream. His was a great dream of an alpine resort, and a great subdivision that would bring people from everywhere to enjoy the delights of alpine Australia near Tumbarumba.
Then Barrie began to build the great resort, friends in Adelaide gave encouragement, the McPherson Plains resort was to become a playground for the adventurers and nature lovers of South Australia. He had visited Bright and Harrietville and knew that Tumbarumba was equally as accessible, as those much visited tourist meccas, for people from Adelaide. Barrie was also a man whose hands were never idle and he could turn them to almost anything. He milled his own timber. Made his own mud bricks. He tackled the problems of plumbing, generators and water supply with gusto and innovation. He encouraged mountain biking and at the resort he was both restaurateur and raconteur. And then just as it seemed that his dreams would come true fate stepped in and the punishers and straighteners of this world began to put obstacles in his way. The Tumbarumba Shire Council, was not developer friendly. They made for problems regarding access, they insisted on built roads and access up front and always fees, development applications and bureaucratic nit picking. Like with so many other dreamers, they did not help smooth the way.
Barrie and his partners needed help to achieve their grand designs and to make the dream become a reality. And it seems that like so many others before them they became prey for the big end of town. They had put their land and their total commitment on the line. Their partners from the big end of town proved unhelpful. The dream at McPhersons Plains collapsed and Barrie and his family retreated to a small holding on Paddy's River to regroup and lick their wounds. Barrie was undaunted. He became a latter day pioneer in mud brick building and developed a small tourism business at "Akuna"
In due course Barrie and Maxine, the girl he had met as a young man in Crookwell, retired to familiar territory in the beautiful village of Binda. There Barrie was generous with his talents. He became "Poppy" to all. He became the village handyman, a financial elder, an organiser. In the lean years he organised for a bore to be sunk.
He was chief handy man, financial advisor and a spokesperson for the Anglican parish of Binda. He attended the synod of the diocese and became friend and advisor to a succession of clergymen. With the passage of years his darling Maxine succumbed, to Alzheimers. He was her support and strength for a long time and then a constant visitor when she was placed in care.
Early this year Barrie was diagnosed with leukemia. He fought a valiant battle, but knew he was on a one way street. He died on 5th August. But this dreamer, did not dream alone and he did not die alone. His children and grand children, the Cramp family, the Anglicans and indeed the entire village of Binda saw to it that he had an appropriate send off.
Barrie was accorded the rare privilege of being buried in the church grounds. His sisters in law, Denise Fisher and Janet Cramp read lessons, his grand-daughter, Lil Costello played beautiful music on the flute, his brother in law Jim Connolly told of his dreams and Rev Rick Lewis spoke of his commitment to the village, his faith and his determination not to be bested in political debate. And then as they laid him to rest behind the church, his family placed soil from "Wollongawah", "McPhersons Plains" and "Akuna" in his grave. He was resting in familiar territory. All those privileged to have been able to attend were convinced that Barrie Locke's heart was in Binda and he was a dreamer who had received a fitting "farewell". Barrie Locke laid to rest at Binda.
