Introduction
Joyce's relationship with his country was strained, and after graduating he dreamed of leaving Ireland to study medicine there to start a new life in Paris. However, he returned shortly after learning that his mother was ill. He died in 1903.
Joyce did not stay long in Ireland, long enough to meet Nora Barnakl, a hotel maid originally from Galway who later became his wife. Around this time, Joyce published his first short story in Irish Homestead magazine. The publication published two more works by Joyce, but the beginning of this literary career was not enough to keep him in Ireland, and in late 1904 he and Barnacle first moved to Pula, Croatia, before settling in the Italian port city. . Triest.
There, Joyce taught English and learned Italian, one of the 17 languages he can speak, including Arabic, Sanskrit, and Greek. Joyce and Barnakl (the two were officially married thirty years after they met) made other efforts to settle in cities such as Rome and Paris. To save his family (the couple had two children, Giorgio and Lucia), Joyce continued to look for teaching jobs.
During this time, however, Joyce continued to write, and in 1914 he published his first book, Dubliners , which consisted of 15 stories. Two years later, Joyce published his second book, The Portrait of an Artist in His Youth .
While the book was not a huge commercial success, it caught the attention of American poet Ezra Pound, who praised Joyce for his unconventional style and voice.
The artist’s youthful portrait is an almost entirely revised novel by Stephen Hero , a neglected novel. Joyce became angry during an argument with Nora and tried to burn the original manuscript, although later, with her help, the manuscript was saved by her sister . Künstlerroman , Portrait is a predominantly autobiographical adult novel depicting the childhood and youth of the protagonist, Stephen Daedalus , and his gradual rise in artistic self-awareness . In this novel, references to the instruments that Joyce frequently uses in his later works are evident, such as the flow of consciousness , the inner monologue, and the mental reality of the character, not the external environment.
