This is an upper-level course that highlights ethical concerns specifically related to practitioners. The course focuses on real-life problems faced by journalists in the day-to-day decision-making process. Topics of the course include: freedom of expression and the press; major ethical philosophies; truth and objectivity in journalism; privacy; relations with the news sources; conflicts of interests; ethically questionable methods; covering tragedies; covering children; covering women; ethical codes throughout the world; news councils and ombudsmanship as accountability systems.
