6 Find out about five popular physical activities
in your country. Which abilities are the most
important? Make a chart and then write about
them.
•
Say
Let’s think about sports and hobbies in our country

Which are the most popular?
Check comprehension of
popular
(= lots of people do them). Students discuss in
pairs and make a list. Elicit a sport or hobby from each
pair and write them all on the board.
•
Point to the chart and explain that it shows popular
physical activities in another country. Draw the chart
on the board, if necessary, and make sure students
understand the column headings. Say
Choose five
popular activities. For each activity, think: What’s most
important: speed, strength, balance, or stamina? Choose
two.
Students copy the chart and complete it for their
chosen activities. Circulate and help as necessary. You
may also like to provide internet access for students to
add more information about their chosen sports. Ask,
e.g.,
Do you think a tennis player needs stamina? What
about speed? Is balance more important?
•
Read the example paragraph below the table. Tell
students to write a similar description of the five activities
they chose. Point out useful structures, e.g.,
(Speed) is
important for (bike racing), People need (strength) for
(rock climbing), We need (stamina) for (dancing),
and
remind students they can also use
must
and
have to

e.g.,
(Basketball players) must have (balance).
•
Students can compare their projects in pairs or
small groups.
