TEACH South Africa was founded in order to end inequity in education through training, developing and deploying a cadre of exceptional young leaders who create change within classrooms, schools, and across society.

  • The vision behind this mission is simply that every child in South Africa should attain an excellent education, irrespective of their socio-economic background.

  • Over the long term, TEACH South Africa aims to create leaders who have the experiences, perspectives, and commitment to create long-lasting, systematic changes that will make South Africa a successful and strong member of the global body of nations. To that end, TEACH South Africa also aims to support South Africa’s 6% economic growth rate target, supporting the required educational changes that will help accelerate progress on that target



TEACH SA deployed its first group of Ambassadors in Gauteng at the start of the 2009 academic year. To date, 277 Ambassadors have been placed in 93 schools in 8 of the 9 provinces. The 277 Ambassadors have been in contact with 12,009 learners.

In order to move into the next phase, TEACH SA has identified five key priorities

Since its inception, TEACH South Africa has had a part time CEO, and an executive director who was supported by a programme manager (who has since joined another organisation).

    • Moving forward, TEACH South Africa would like to strengthen its top leadership structure and appoint a CEO to shape its strategic direction.
    • This will streamline programmatic activities and build up the organisational capacity to meet programme’s imperatives to grow to scale and deepen impact and effectiveness.


In 2013, TEACH Ambassadors teaching matric in six schools achieved pass rates over 81%. Ambassadors have also implemented a wide range of “legacy” projects in their schools.

  • Roughly 60% of TEACH SA alums remain in education, which is on par with global averages from the Teach For All network.

  • TEACH SA would like to deepen the impact of TEACH participants through:

    • Lengthening the upfront teacher training from 2 weeks to 5-6 weeks
    • Strengthening on-going, classroom-based support and PD for teachers
    • Accelerating the alumni movement by developing a strategy for TEACH alums to take leadership roles throughout society – in and out of schools
    • Gathering impact data for programme support and learning


Over the past six years, TEACH South Africa has received over 4,500 complete applications to join the movement for educational equity.

  • In 2013, TEACH South Africa was voted Best Graduate Employer in the Voluntary and Charity Sector by the South African Graduate Recruiters Association.

  • Going forward, TEACH South Africa would like to focus on:

    • Attracting more racially diverse candidates, as well as candidates in the top 15% of their graduating class.
    • Deepening its marketing and recruitment efforts and developing stronger partnerships that will entice top graduates into the program, and increase TEACH SA’s presence on key university campuses.

  • Moving forward, TEACH SA would like to develop even more mission-driven placement options, as well as partnerships that support TEACH SA taking a leading role in the recruitment and development of educational leaders.

    • Funding: finding the financial champions who understand the foundational nature of this model and commit to its success
    • “Provincial model”: placing TEACH Ambassadors close together and having TEACH SA support come from a local provincial team
    • Scale: develop the necessary partnerships to help TEACH grow to 1,000
    • Ed reform: given the increased interest in contract schools, low-cost private schools, and other innovative educational solutions, the need has never been greater for a strong and vibrant crop of TEACH SA Ambassadors to fill critical teaching and leadership positions in SA.
