Descriptive statistics
The each runway’s sample arithmetic mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum are
computed. The statistical analysis is performed for south and north flow separately. Table 3
shows the height of the arrival aircraft over the PT centerline on the four arrival runways 17C,
18R, (south flow) 35C and 36L (north flow) at DFW. The minimum height of 95 feet over the
PT centerline on runway 36L was recorded for Northwest flight #403, a DC93. The other
minimum height of 105 ft over the centerline of PT on runway 35C was recorded for American
Airlines flight #67, a B777-200. The north and south flow arrival heights are similar, but north
flow operations have a lower mean, median and minimum height than south flow operations.
Overall, the arrival heights are much lower than the departure heights with a lot smaller standard
deviations. This is likely due to the nature of the approach path.
