INDIAN SCIENCE NEWS ASSOCIATION (ISNA)

92, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, Kolkata 700009

To The Fellow Scientists and the Participants of the Academic Institutes of our country
Dear Friends,
With much felicity I am to inform you that the Council of the Indian Science News Association (ISNA) has decided to organize a unique and timely two day National Symposium on Contributions of Women in Science in India” (NSCWSI-2018) on 15-16 February 2018 (Thursday and Friday) at the University College of Science, Technology and Agriculture, 92, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, Kolkata 700009, in the two heritage auditoriums namely the Meghnad Saha auditorium and the N.R. Sen Auditorium. As you are kindly aware, ISNA is a premier registered Society of our country that was established in 1935 by Acharya Sir Prafulla Chandra Ray as the Founder President and Professor Meghnad Saha and Professor Bidhu Bhusan Ray as the Founder Honorary Secretaries,
Nearly 30 Invited Speakers including several women Awardees of Bhatnagar Prize and about 300 delegates from the prominent departments of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Pharmaceuticals, Earth Sciences, and Medical Sciences are expected to participate in this National Symposium.
The Symposium aims to cultivate confidence and courage among women scientists by showcasing their achievements in the aforesaid fields. It aims to engage in an exclusive discourse with a view to empowering current and future female leaders, and to recognizing and providing a common networking forum for women students, staff, and faculty. The objective, it can be reiterated, is to encourage a New Generation of Empowered Women through recognizing and celebrating their achievements.
I hereby appeal to the established as well as budding scientists to participate in the Symposium and share their research results and the associated struggles. One of the immediate goals of the Symposium will be to dive deeper into the social dynamics in order to understand better the underlying factors contributing to the age old bias against women that has largely hindered their ascent as leaders in science. It is hoped that insights in the current social and cultural drivers that lead to a decreasing number of women scientists in senior and responsible positions will be revealed. As is well known, in spite of the large number of female graduates with higher degrees, including MSc and PhD, women constitute a very tiny fraction of the working scientists today in male dominated fields. This is a great loss for our nation.
Our long term goals include initiating efforts to collectively try and address some of the deep rooted issues at various levels in order to further the cause of girl and women empowerment, promote workplace safety, restore and foster gender balance, and help realize a better future for one and all.
It is also hoped that the Symposium, probably the first of its kind in India to the best of our knowledge, will pave the way for a new generation of scientists in different fields through presentations regarding how a child can grow up to become a confident and successful person, and effect a positive change in society even from a very young age.
All relevant information about the Symposium is furnished in the sequel.
With regards and best wishes,
Sincerely yours,
Mrs Bani Talapatra, DSc, PRS (CU)

About Indian Science News Association (ISNA)

The Indian Science News Association was established in the year 1935 with the initiative of Professor M. N. Saha, Acharya P. C. Ray and other stalwarts. For the first time in the history of Indian science, such an organization was set up to disseminate exclusively science news and reflections of Indian scientists and thinkers of public understanding of science and culture. To meet this goal, the Association has been publishing since inception its mouthpiece journal Science and Culture, where original research contributions on basic sciences, articles on social and cultural aspects and on nationally important events written by experts are published.

.

The first Council of the Association was graced by the presence of, inter alia, Acharya P. C. Ray (Founder President), Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Sir U. N. Brahmachari and Dr. S. C. Law (Vice-Presidents), Professor M. N. Saha and Professor Bidhubhusan Ray (Founder Secretaries), and Professor N. R. Sen (Treasurer). In the past, the Annual General Meetings of the Association were graced by the presence of eminent personalities like S. S. Bhatnagar, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Humayun Kabir, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and many others.

The journal had earlier been enriched by thoughtful articles from luminaries like S. C. Law, Radha Kumud Mookherjee, P. C. Mahalanobis, Sunderlal Hora, Priyada Ranjan Ray, U. P. Basu, Meghnad Saha, U. N. Brahmachari, T. R. Sheshadri, S. Bhagavantam, S. K. Mitra, B. C. Guha, D. M. Bose, S. N. Bose, S. S. Bhatnagar, Homi J. Bhabha, D. N. Wadia, Atma Ram, D. S. Kothari, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the like. Articles from eminent foreign scientists like Sir James H. Jeans, Sir Arthur Eddington, Dr. F. W. Aston, Dr. F. K. Morris, Dr. H. J. Fleure and Dr. R. A. Millikan (NL) were also published in the journal. Many of the editorials of Science and Culture made notable impacts on formulating plans on matters of national interest. Thus, in 1952-53, River Valley Schemes and Calendar Reform, advocated earlier by Science and Culture, received recognition from both the State and the Central Governments and duly materialized by the Governments.
The Association also undertook a programme of publishing popular books, such as Thinking of our Future by Professor M. N. Saha, which highlighted various aspects of the Five Year Plan, Inorganic Chemistry by Professor Priyada Ranjan Ray, Visva Viggan (in Bengali) by Shri Kamalesh Ray, Astronomy by Professor J. N. Bhar, and Emerging Science and Culture: Connecting People edited by Professor S. C. Roy . Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime Minister of India made the following comment in a message to this journal: “Science and Culture are the essence of life to-day, in war and peace, and any periodical which serves the cause of Science and Culture performs a service to India and humanity.
Two workshops - one on Futurology and another on Training Programme on Science Communication and Media Practice were organized in 1980s in collaboration with the DST, Government of India and Government of West Bengal. A 12-week annual course on Science Communication and Media Practice has been going on since 1980s. The course is very popular, and a number of participants to this course has subsequently found jobs in various media.
Since its beginning, the journal has been receiving generous financial support from many philanthropists, businessmen, commercial houses and several Research Institutes and Universities based mainly in Calcutta. Through this support, the Association has been successfully pursuing activities like organizing seminars, symposia, workshops, popular lectures, and memorial lectures on eminent scientists and propagating the ideas that were initiated by Acharya P. C. Ray.
ISNA has celebrated in a befitting manner the 150th Birth Anniversary of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray in the year 2015. On this occasion a documentary film on ‘Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray – an Ancient Guru Reborn’ has been produced under the direction of Mujibar Rahman. This documentary was released by Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi, Hon’ble Governor of west Bengal at Nandan on 2nd February, 2015. In commemoration of Acharya Ray’s 150th Birth Anniversary ISNA has also published a Book, ‘Sir P. C. Ray – the Father of Chemistry Teaching and Research in India, a Philanthropist and an Entrepreneur’, edited by Professor Sunil Kumar Talapatra and Professor Biswapati Mukherjee.

This book comprising sixteen illuminating articles on diverse topics written by erudite scholars. His ancestral heritage, family background, childhood days, school and college education, graduate and post-graduate (D.Sc.) days in Edinburgh University, his lifelong tryst with chemistry, his endeavour for spreading the chemical Gharana throughout India, his multifaceted pioneering contributions as the father figure of chemistry teaching and research in India, and as an inspiring builder of the Indian Chemical Society and its Journal, and of the ISNA and its Journal Science and Culture, the history of his monumental achievement in establishing the Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works, and several other industries, his contributions as a pioneer in the history of science and science communication studies, a critical evaluation of his literary endeavour on Shakespeare, his patriotic role as the President of the National Council of Education, his in-depth thoughts on varied aspects of education, and his association with contemporary politics – freedom movement, social welfare and relief work etc. have been narrated in the included elegant articles. His own article on insurance has revealed his competence as an economist. This book thus promises to enrich the library, and the intellectual space of the reader.
